+1 for the Hartke and Ashdown suggestions above. If it's portability you're after, don't rule out a seperate head and cab as can be more manageable than having all the weight in one unit, and more easily upgradeable too. Also some combos have restrictions on driving extra speakers should you want to add another cab into the mix. S/H definitely best value whatever route you choose, loads of good buys on here. Cheers.
Most Warwicks, most headless basses, most coffee-table-top basses, most Yamahas.
Agreed, although some Yamahas do appeal to me. (And I do have a Hohner B2A too - oops!) Add to the list :- Anything by Status / Warwick / Alembic / Jaydee / Overwater etc. Some 70's period Fenders now masquerading as vintage/cool (despite being heavy ugly& thrown together) Jazz basses with block inlays - wrong! LED's on fingerboards. Anything with too many knobs/switches or sharp bits. Anything with too many strings for me to manage (clue- I'm struggling with 4) Anything that hits the floor when you let go of the neck - whats that about?

Who actually plays vintage Fenders?
casapete replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Use my 63 Precision every now and then, just to remind myself why I can never part with it. Then its back to Stingrays and Danos until I feel the urge again. -
Staus Groove with fitted case on Leeds Gumtree - £125. Got to be a bargain? Go!

.......'superstar but he did n't get far'........ An absolute belter. Although I preferred her Motown era stuff, she continued to make classic recordings after she'd left the label - this tune being one of them, along with 'Come back and finish what you started', 'Best thing that ever happened to me' and 'Baby dont change your mind' (all of which featured great bass lines too). Love 'em.

After a lot of agonising have decided to part with my Sub. Its been my spare 'spare' bass for a while now, but am just not using it. Too good to have languishing in its case, so here we are. Its a Jan 2007 model (one of the last made?) so it has the compensated nut, and is finished in teal. I'm the 2nd owner since new, guy who had it before me never used it out of the house. I've only gigged it a few times, so it has had a charmed life till now. Only non-standard thing is the scratchplate, but can include the original with it as well if you want. I prefer the black one thats fitted, so you have the choice. It is in superb condition and order. Nothing on the body/neck/frets, and just a few v.minor marks on the headstock. Fairly recent D'Addarios fitted along with a new Duracell. Plays fine, sounds amazing - just as good as my Stingray, possibly a tad louder/punchier according to my bandmates! Classic 2 band eq works great, simple but very effective. Will include a posh Tribal Planet rigid gigbag too (in v.g.c.), which IIRC cost me around £50. So, a proper (future collectable?) USA made bass in superb condition complete with robust gigbag SOLD! Thanks for looking - cheers Pete.

Will boutique basses be good long-term investments?
casapete replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Original and iconic, which Fender P & J basses are will always hold there value better than copies,no matter how refined the copies are.If these companies that make these high end "copies" are so good/inovative,why can't they come up with an original idea, without it looking like a P or a J bass ? Just look at almost anything American from the 50's - early 60's,cars,bikes.............etc For example, 57 Chevy or Vauxhall Cresta ? 60's Fender or 60's Burns ? Harley Panhead or Sunbeam ? Levi's originals or Staypressed ? I know which i'd rather have.
Carrying on the car theme, I think the thing is to go for 'classic' instruments of the period - these are the ones which have tons of appeal when new, which will continue for many years due to great design, build, function and desirability. I'm currently looking for a Peugeot 406 coupe - surely (if not already) a classic motor which will remain so in years to come. Nearly 30 years ago I considered myself really current by using a Stingray after years of old Fenders. The Stingray (although not a million miles away from my P-bass) was such a radical change for me, mainly due to being an active bass. Nowadays after nearly 35 years in production the Stingray is firmly established as a 'classic' iconic design. Whether costly boutique versions of the Jazz bass will be viewed like this in the future remains to be seen. The ones which probably will hold/increase their value are the instruments which are currently fairly affordable, aesthetic and innovative. Oh yeah, and cool!! -
GK 800RB into a 2x15 EV cab - great! GK 1001 into a 4 ohm Loud 4x10, (& sometimes a Loud 1x15 too if its needed!) Neither set up requires much deviation from tone controls set flat. I love GK amps.

Selling this on behalf of someone I know, following a recent post in the 'Gear' section asking help to identify it! Anyway its a vintage style Jazz replica, probably Chinese in origin. Metallic (candy apple?) red, aged scratchplate, chrome plate and knobs, finger rest, screws near bridge (presumably for chrome cover, not included tho), tinted maple neck with rosewood board, matching headstock (blank-no logo etc). Overall excellent condition, no dings apart from small one on headstock. No evident fretwear either. Plays & sounds fine, strings still ok as well. Would make a fine starter bass or a good 'spare'. General verdict on value in the 'Gear' thread was around £100 mark , but will accept £ NOW SOLD!!! Possible deal on a hard case (preferably shaped - Hiscox etc) that would fit my Stingray. I'm in East Yorkshire near Hull, and would prefer cash on collection. However could maybe arrange a possible meet-up somewhere if suitable. Cheers.

Great bass, nice one! Just remember to unplug your lead when not in use, as they can be a bit heavy on batteries. (Best to always have a spare one to hand as they dont work without 'em!) I had a metallic white one which I've always regretted selling.

In a church (next to the altar) as part of local 'music festival'. At a Medieval jousting tournament (last week!) In Paris at the European Balloon Sculpturing Awards. On airport runway in front of 747 jet. Floating on a pontoon in a city dock (promoting another music festival!) In a barn (used for expectant sheep) in Scotland, where the booker had sprinkled Birds Custard powder(?!!) on the 'dancefloor' in an attempt to get rid of the smell of sheep sh*t! Needless to say did n't work, not many dancing punters etc.

Talk about lying/making a mistake about the wattage
casapete replied to HoweDy's topic in General Discussion
Possibly the power consumption printed on a label somewhere... ?
A common mistake. Also Peavey used to name their amps using optimistic numbers i.e.TNT100 combos were (IIRC) only around 45 watts etc. (May be named after 'peak' power ratings rather than RMS?) Some manufacturers also name combos after their given output when using an extension cab - bit misleading for newbies. -
Owen posted me some MM bridge screws FOR FREE!!! (And he chucked in the allen key and some EB wipes too) What a top bloke. Good to know that this is still the place to meet decent people who help each other out etc. Restores my faith in human nature it does... Many thanks Owen, ATB Pete.

However, no logo so maybe/probably not. (Cant see it being worth £295 new either TBH! ) Thanks for the info, cheers.
It's one of those generic Chinese jobbies, Rockers in Denmark Street used to have a boatload of them badged as 'Rockers' but they turn up all over the place. Actually pretty good VFM when set up, but you're not going to be able to retire on the proceeds! Probably valued at about £100-125? Cheers, James
Remember seeing something like this in Music Ground in Leeds a few years ago which would tie in with your info. Thanks !

Someone I know after selling this - has asked me what it is / value etc and I'm not sure!! Obviously some sort of generic Jazz copy, quite good quality too. Tinted gloss neck, matching headstock, chrome knobs and finger rest!! No clues on it as to origin, brand name etc. Have cleaned it up and its in pretty good nick, plays and sounds fine. Any thoughts/opinions/ideas of what it may be worth etc. more than welcome - many thanks.
Anyone got experience of these? Rees Really good write up in this months BGM. Allegedly very light.
I tried this bass at a guitar show last year and was quite impressed - very light,SD pickup, great neck shape and balanced well. At the time was looking for a bass to use after a shoulder/arm injury and thought this might do the trick. Just could n't get past the aesthetics though, which probably shows how shallow I am! Think Rees are based near Cambridge - the guy on the stand at the show said I could go to see them made and they would build a bass to my requirements, which at the time would have cost around £600 - not a bad price really?
