1. I'd go for a decent used Stingray - usually a few for sale on here. Expect to pay around £700,maybe less if you're lucky. (There's a thread regarding the price of new Rays just started on here too.) Plenty of colour options to choose from - and don't let anyone put you off the 3 EQ ones, they're great too! Good luck.
2. And just noticed an as new one for £850 on here - basses for sale.
3.
Anyone know where the cheapest place is to buy a 2EQ Musicman Stingray? My usual store, Andertons has them at stupid prices at around £1500. GAK seems to be the cheapest so far at £1199. Anyone know anywhere else that might have them cheaper?
There's one on ebay at the moment - red / maple neck /2 eq with hard case. Brand new, £1075. Item number 400049483055. (sorry, dont know how to post link!) Seller is Arcade Music, based in Cannock,West Midlands. Cheapest I've seen lately.
4. Hi Nick - are the castors the same as the silver Ernie Ball type used on Fender combos? They have a plate with an insert for the removeable part, which just pushes in/pulls out. If they are I'd be interested - any chance of a pic please? Cheers. Pete.
5. I used one a long time ago. Think it was the forerunner to the SVT350/450H models. Ok if not great, and maybe not the loudest amp around. Well made US built Ampeg though - would have thought it was worth around £250,maybe more? Have a look on Harmony Central, lots of opinions on there! Cheers.
6. Focus were a favourite band of a lot of my mates at school in the early 70's. Seem to remember someone having a live album (Live at the Rainbow, or maybe a bootleg?)of theirs where Akkerman drops the most amazing bollock whilst playing their big hit of the time 'Sylvia' -anybody heard/got this?
7. Advantages of fretless? Nobody asks to borrow your bass at jam nights..............
8.
Hello from yet another forum member in Lincoln! I'd be well up for a Lincoln Bash too.
And don't forget us in the East Yorkshire chapter from just ovver t'bridge.....................
9. Is it me or have I just been lucky with my MM necks? Never had a problem with dirt accumulation, although I'm almost OCD regarding having clean hands before playing! Have occasionally just used a slightly damp cloth on the board and thats been it. But which is best - lacquered or unfinished? Ther's only one way to find out - FIGHT!
10. Hi Stu - good to have someone else from East Yorkshire aboard! I live in Hessle too, as does a fellow BC member so we're getting a few here! May catch up one day, all the best mate. Pete.
11.
I had one a loooong time ago in purple with 15" speaker,i think that 18" speakers were also an option. It was cheap, horrible and almost impossible to get rid of.I converted mine into a 4 x 12 as it is the same size.
Sounds exactly what I thought too. Big heavy inefficient cab,for collectors only methinks.
12. Seem to remember these cabs were made between 1973 and 1975. Model number 2065 I believe, they contained a 15 inch speaker( possibly from the then current Celestion Powercell range) and were probably rated at around 125 watts/8 ohms. They were available in red as well as usual Marshall dark grey, and I think were the same external dimensions as a 4x12. The cabinet design was often referred to as 'picture frame'!!! Hope this helps. Cheers Pete.
13. When I saw Little Richard (in the 90's I think) he had a brace of bassists.
14. Given that the main point of a combo is convenience/portability, the most common route is for either 1x12,1x15 or 2x10 inch speakers. Personally would probably go for a 2x10 - most speaker area etc, but it depends on what sound you like / amp preferences etc. Cant see the point of a 4x10 combo really myself - far easier to get a seperate cab and amp head. And your back will appreciate it too.
15. Guilty as charged m'lud......... I enjoy the anticipation of checking out the gear and then trying to figure out how it will sound. Love it when the gear is nothing special but the band sound great,( and even more when there's sh*tloads of fancy kit and the band make it sound rubbish!) The drumkit is often a good indicator of this too - nice small kit = great player / massive kit with assorted perc etc = horror! A mate of mine who I used to be in a band with used a standard Squier Strat- you could see punters checking it out to see if it was a 'real' Fender and then tutting. Of course when he played it was amazing. He's just one of those players who can make anything sound wonderful. Most gearstalkers I ever encounter is when I use my Hohner B2A - 'whats that then mate' etc. You can see them a mile off - they always want to know where the strings attach and how to tune it.
16. These are amazing amps - I have an original model and they're so close it's unreal. Best small amp on the market IMO. Bump!
17. Look for the SVT 410 HLF - s/h USA model. Not light, but great sounding 4 ohm cab. Handles/castors/tilt back design etc. Reckon you should be able to track one down within your budget, and will match up with your SVT well.
18. I sing a lot of BV's - got a very ordinary sounding voice for singing lead, but doesn't seem to matter too much for harmonies! My range is medium/high so I usually get the third/fifth above stuff to sing-quite enjoy it too. I've had gigs in the past where singing BV's has got me the job over someone who didn't, so it's a useful thing to have IMO. I reckon if you can play an instrument you can probably sing to some degree,a lot of it is just confidence. Did a job a couple of years ago where no vocals were required and went on stage for the first time without a mic stand in front of me, very odd.
19. Playing at weddings and corporates we get used to drunken punters trying to have a go with our kit. They always seem to go for mics, drums and percussion in that order,so I can usually hear the noise before they get to grabbing my Stingray. We just try to make sure nothing is left too easy to get to,although not always possible. I don't let anyone try my bass unless they ask first - its just the arrogance of picking up something valuable thats not yours that I can't stand. Unfortunately punters at some of our better paid gigs seem to think they can book a band and then prat around with their gear too. (I like the Porsche scenario mentioned by Jakesbass above-will have to remember that one.) Oh yeah, and I never let anyone use my mic - its just too personal a thing to share (germs&lipstick-theirs not mine!)
20. What about a preamp such as the Behringer BD121 ? Cheap and cheerful and worth a look. Amp simulations if you need them as well as a DI out.
21.
Someone kindly bought me Xtreme Bass by Stuart Clayton at Xmas. Unfortunately they didn't ask me first otherwise I would have told them that I don't need a beginners book (or perhaps they have heard me and thought otherwise! ) It is mint and unopened. If you PM me your address I'll send it to you. No charge, just think of it as a welcome to bass playing.
This is what makes this site great! Nice one.

23. Does n't sound out of the way to me - reckon if you got it and hated it you'd get approaching £300 back on here/ ebay etc. For me Trace gear is a Marmite job-either love 'em or hate 'em. Can't get on with them myself, but plenty of people on here who love 'em , so what do I know!
