Let's talk about pitch correction.

Me neither - wasn't keen on Duran Duran (especially with SLB's flat vocals) or Spandau Ballet either, but at least Spandau had a decent singer who could carry a tune.- 194 replies

Think it was me mentioning Buble, and comparing him to Sinatra who he most probably idolises. What I don't get with Buble is that he's an okay singer , (nothing great but can do it IMHO) so why make records that so obviously feature 'that' sound? Most of the music he plays seems to reference older swing styles so at what point did anyone think they should change this to being more contemporary by relying on vocal effects? Then again, with record sales of 30 million worldwide what do I know......🤔- 194 replies

Whilst reading this, Radio 2 have just played Frank Sinatra singing 'My Way'. Some of his notes are just a bit flat in a few places, but it doesn't stop it being a great performance IMHO. Contrast with Michael Buble, who's more recent output appears (to me at least) to be quite obviously auto-tuned. I know which I prefer. ☺️ P.S. - Forgot to add, Sinatra walked in and did the song in one take too.- 194 replies

I've done this alternating between an old Roland D5 and my P-bass. Just set it up using an A/B box into my rig then DI with no problems, very lo-fi but worked fine. Main problem was having enough room onstage to set the Roland up. When I went to see Stevie Wonder, Nate Watts switched between bass and keys for a lot of the gig, although must admit I couldn't hear much difference.

I feel your pain. I had a Peavey 410TX, used it for years. Seriously underrated cab in my opinion, shame it weighed a ton. ( Had a 210TX as well, another great bargain cab.) Mine survived a few months in Morocco, shipped out there with just a vinyl covering too. Just because it’s regular stuff is no reason to abuse it though.

Zambezi was actually a cover too - was from the 1950’s by Lou Busch. 🙂

Sounds good then, go for it! Nothing wrong with simple stuff either. Good luck.

Years ago when I was playing guitar in a country rock band, we were supporting a well known rock n roll band who turned up a bit late for the set up. They had to get a piano onto the small stage which made it tight for room. With time running out the guitarist asked me if he could use my Fender Twin - he said it would save him dragging his identical amp in from the van, so I agreed as it made sense. His band also used our drum kit. We did the gig, then watched the main band who were great. Guitarist didn’t talk to me afterwards ( let alone buy me a pint for the use of my amp) and his band packed down quickly and left us to strike our gear. Wasn’t until half an hour later I realised my fairly new cover I’d had made for my amp was missing - what an utter tw*t! Never got it back. 😡

Traditionally bluegrass was played on all acoustic instruments, (with double bass and a dreadnought acoustic being standard kit ) so a Tele and a Fender bass aren’t strictly authentic. Of course this doesn’t matter if that isn’t the route you’re going down - in my country band I used to use a bass uke to get an upright-ish sound on bluegrass tunes and it did the job well. I reckon your sponged Precision will do fine until you decide how the band may develop.

Or even a Spice Girls gig......sorry, wrong thread.🤣

I’ve seen Emmy a couple of times, with The Hot Band. Am a fan of Rodney Crowell too, who is in the band on the OGWT programme. I do prefer her earlier stuff but appreciate the way she moved with the times on the Daniel Lanois album and later work. A great artist. -

Just read in the TV schedules that this Friday (7th May) there is an evening of Emmylou Harris stuff on BBC4. Starts at 9pm and includes an OGWT special from 1977 that I remember being great. -

If you can find one, the Tanglewood Elfin EB-18 is a great little bass. Short scale mini Precision style, no longer made but s/h around £75. I do believe Harley Benton do a similar one as well. ( You don’t mention the age of the child, which will affect what’s best too of course.) The Ibanez mentioned above is also a good call.

Absolutely, along with The Ronettes, The Crystals, Martha and the Vandellas, The Shirelles (and even Bananrama and The Nolans!!)

Fave and least fave electric guitar noises?
casapete replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Good call. I seem to remember reading somewhere that PT used a Gretsch for that track, crunchy but somehow quite clean too. I saw The Who live and his tone was amazing, ( using SGs and Les Pauls ) but still his sound. -

I mainly like clean or light/medium overdriven sounds, nothing that obscures the tone of any particular guitar so you can't discern what it is. I really can't abide the crazy overdriven metal sounds that are just so anonymous and could be made with virtually any guitar / pedal / lunatic preamp, although to be fair I can't stand metal or any of it's close relations anyway (largely due to said guitar sounds coupled with the screaming vocals). The best sounds for me are when you can immediately identify the player and their tone / choice of guitar. And yes, I am getting on a bit.....🤣 -
I have the identical bass and love it! Had a few Danos and it is the best one, perhaps due to to it being the ‘Pro’ model, which basically means upgraded bridge and tuners along with just a vol and tone control with a 3 way switch. Featherweight and sounds great too.

For pub gigs I usually just take one bass, on the basis that I’m never usually too far from home to nip back for a replacement. Bit daft but hey ho. On my main gigs in theatres I always have a spare, and have needed it a few times over the years. This is because some (usually older ) theatres occasionally don’t like my active bass, and we get a small amount of interference through our PA. Not really bad but enough to be an annoyance to our sound tech. Probably just down to lighting/wiring in the venue. When this happens I just dig out my old passive P-bass and problem solved. On all my gigs I carry a spare of every lead though, along with strings, mics and either a spare amp or my Sansamp.

Yup, me too. Going to do the same, change my password but not via any link.

Love 'em. So few players concentrate enough on this side of guitar playing. All time great rhythm players for me would be Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Nile Rodgers and John Frusciante.

I really don’t like fast ’widdly’ playing on any instrument, especially in rock and blues guitar. That’s why I enjoy T Bone Walker, BB/Albert/Freddie King, most of Eric Clapton’s stuff etc. In a world of overdistorted ‘rawk’ excursions, I admire players who you can instantly recognise too, such as Mark Knopfler, The Edge, SRV and many more, where a clean (ish) sound allows for more expression and style to stand out. One of the best electric players I’ve ever seen is Mike Campbell, currently with Fleetwood Mac but for years the guitarist with Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers. Absolute full control and mastery of his instrument, minimum effects and playing for the song every time.

I'm a long time Danelectro Longhorn player, but appreciate they may not be for everyone, so would recommend - Squier Jaguar bass short scale. Recently discontinued but they do crop up s/h from time to time. Were around the £180 / £200 range when new, so expect to get one for around £125 ish. Great 30" scale, P/J pickups (which are fine) and overall a cracking little bass. Wish I hadn't sold mine now 🙁 https://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-dept/bass-guitars/retro-bass-guitars/squier-jaguar-bass-special-short-scale-bass-in-candy-apple-red
