a vote here for the Harley Benton Junior, I've got one powering my board and it's fantastic for the cash. (our guitarist has one as well) Matt
-
that does look tasty, I think I might hold off from buying a tonehammer 500 and see what these actually sound like I person. Matt
-
the only small issue with the Harley Benton supply is that it has a fixed 2 pin European plug, very easy to chop it off and fit a male IEC (kettle) plug though, Matt
-
if you want a cheap power supply then the Harley Benton Junior is a cracker, I'm using one for my board (actually using 2 but the other is the palmer version which is more expensive) 5x120mA outputs and they're isolated so you can do 18v or 240mA with the right cables. and they're under 25 quid! Bill is talking real sense here, designing Bass cabs is a science (or possibly a black art), this is the reason that I till have a celestion neo 10 sitting in it's original box on a shelf, I bought it about 7 years ago thinking that i could save some cash and build my own little lightweight cab, after reading around a bit and playing with winisd for many hours I realised that even with my engineering degree I was in over my head, hence the pair of barefaced cabs in my signature. Matt

230lbs is 104kg, so I still think the new cab is going to weigh as much as the old one, have you looked at the Fearful 1515/66 ? it's about the same overall size as the cab you are building but will be much lighter and should be much louder. Matt
-
ok, then my calc comes out at about 65kg empty, which would be well over the 103kg of your old cab when you add the drivers, personally I'd be looking at the designs by Bill Fitzmaurice or the fearful designs, 1x15 or 2x15 with the eminence speakers. Matt
-
I've just done a fag packet calculation based on the pictures, and assuming that it's about 4 ft high, 3 ft wide and 20 inches deep, and made from 18mm ply, I'm getting about 40kg for the empty cab, so at least 80kg with the speakers, lighter than the 103.5kg of the basson but compared to a modern 2x15 or one of Alex's 6x10's it's still very heavy. it makes my back ache just thinking about moving it! Matt
-
that's a beast, 40kg of drivers alone! I'd make sure that the stage can take it before you haul it down there, with the added weight of a VBA400 (or 2!) and then the vibrations, this could end up through the floor! how much does the empty cab weigh? Matt

big thumbs up for the D6, our drummer bought one and it's ace, we have the i5 for the snare as well, another great mic. Matt

How do you store/transport your cables/leads?
Matt P replied to Mornats's topic in Accessories and Misc
I use the cut to size Velcro tape, permanently attached with a jeans-type rivet, when I'm off to a gig they go into a laptop bag with my amp, at home I have a few long hooks to store cables on and one for straps. another recommendation to go for just a few mics, we use a bass drum mic, a dynamic on the snare and a pair of condensers on the overheads, if you pick carefully they will also double up for other instruments if he decides to branch out (or if you want to do some band recording on the cheap and he'll let borrow them) Matt

that looks mighty pretty, but I notice that there is no access panel on the back for string changes, so everything has to be done through the soundhole, I played a couple of different models before I bought my kala and the access o he underside of the bridge was major factor for me,the kala had the nicest design with hidden magnets, there was a korala and a ohana as well and one had no access and the other had screw in panel which is fine as a design but the screws were in at odd angles so they weren't flush, so even though there was very little to choose between them in tone and playability I went for the kala (the nice semi hard case helped to offset the £100 extra that the kala was over it's next dearest rival) one of te cheaper ones was fitted with strings that looked like Aquila but when compared to the real thing they were a lighter colour and not quite as nice sounding. I think Andyjr1515 has said it best, as it's a bound maple neck the work involved to thin it down will be huge, if you can find someone to build a replica to your own spec then that is probably easiest, and as the badge looks like it can be unscrewed from the original neck and screwed into the new one no-one would be able to tell that it's not original. I wouldn't be surprised if the new neck was about the same price as slimming down the old one either. Matt

another trolley post/question which is best
Matt P replied to hollywoodrox's topic in General Discussion
I've got one identical to the einhell one suggested (twice). mine is branded as Clarke (machine mart) and I stack both my cabs, my pedalboard and my amp bag on with a couple of bungees for peace of mind. it works a treat for the 200 yards or so that I need it for, it survived a festival as well although it took a while to hose all the mud off. Matt -
definitely go the 5.3ohm option, if the budget will stretch to them I'd look at the neo celestion speakers, they're half the weight, about 2.5kg each instead of 5kg each for the ferrite one's you're currently looking at, I've used the 10 inch ones and they're pretty good. I bought mine from Lean Business. Mat

the P-bass would be my choice, if you swap the position of the d-g part of the p-pup then the MM can go in the sweet spot, the classic example is this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/86953-pingray/page__hl__pingray I've been thinking of doing this for a while probably with sonic blue cv squire. Do you/your band rehearse with full gigging set-up?
Matt P replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
we use the supplied PA and drums, the drummer brings his snares and cymbals, my rig is super light so I bring it along anyway (usually only one cab though) the guitarist is using a 1x12 combo so brings that along too (we had a dire 3 months while it was being repaired/upgraded, the first session after it returned was a joy!) we're lucky as the place we use has petty good PA and the drum kits are actually reasonable and have the skins replaced fairly regularly (more often than our drummer replaces the skins on his kit anyway!) Matt -
as the owner of the F1 that will be up for test I'm interested in hearing the difference that the strings will make, all of my basses have flatwounds so I'm hoping that the flats+th500+midgets will sound the way I remember, I might even bring the u-bass as well! Matt
-
once I get my act together and reply to Conan's PM then i'll be trying this amp out with my cabs, and we can have a go at trying the preamp through the power section of my F1 as well to see if that is the issue, there's one shop local that has the TH500 in stock and is un by friendly guy so a trip over there to A/B it with band new amp might be possible as well. Mat
-
I find that I use my 5 string about 95% of the time whether I need the low b or not, I do have a couple of 4 strings and they do get used (especially the '77 P-Bass) I'd recommend trying a 5 string with a slimmer neck, the first choice for me would be an Ibanez SR505, the last one I played was super slick. and always remember that the optimum number of basses is S-1 (with S being the number that would cause the Break down of your normal life (partner walking out/house repossessed dog leaving you etc) Matt
-
Used the TH500 again last night, and the result was much better So maybe the power supply is (at least part of) the problem? I still played the entire set with the gain set at zero. I find this perplexing!! Couldn't try the guitar lead as the amp only has speakon outputs. Couldn't try other cabs as I only had a speakon-speakon lead with me and all the other cabs had either jack or XLR inputs But maybe my ears are just getting used to the sound through this amp? It was still (what I would call) a bit distorted, but I'm starting to think that maybe this is just part of the characteristic tone of the amp. Some call it "warmth" or "vintage character" and so on - but I hear it as mild distortion! I'm still coming to the conclusion that this is not the amp for me... so anyone who is interested in one, form an orderly queue!
Me me me! I might offer the f1 as part of a trade if you are interested? Matt

2x Markbass 102p vs. 1x Barefaced Super Compact
Matt P replied to worship_mud's topic in Amps and Cabs
I play in similar sized venues, and the guitarist and drummer are noisy so-and-so's but I've never had any issues being heard in fact at our last gig (new years eve so fairly raucous) I played the first set with just one midget plugged in, I only realised when I nipped on stage before the second set to check everything was ready to go. I'd say that a single supercompact will be all the cab you are likely to need, I only bought 2 midgets as I had permission from my wife and the space on the shelf was exactly the right size, plus they look awesome on stage, a mini stack of doom! 2x Markbass 102p vs. 1x Barefaced Super Compact
Matt P replied to worship_mud's topic in Amps and Cabs
I wasn't going to sign up as I have 2nd generation cabs but I will now, if Alex wants owns of older cab to join in then I'll join in, I'm always willing to show how amazing the cabs are. Matt -

is there a barefaced owner near you? http://barefacedbass.com/barefaced-map.htm i'd wager that a large proportion of barefaced owners are also Basschat members, there is also the 30 day free trial, if you don't like the cab or it's not delivering what you want you just send it back.
