I'd go for trading it for a fretless if that's what you want, especially if you could get one of the cheaper Yamaha bb fretless basses. Failing that what about stringing it differently, B-D maybe or with nylon flats for a different tone. Matt

I've not had a huge amount of time to play with this but I'm playing in church in the morning and it'll get a good run out then. Matt
My other midget arrived today too! I now have the same stack as you (but with black grills) and an Aguilar TH500 Currently running the sine wave through it to break it in, sounds like a helicopter overhead!
yeah I've got the sine wave running as well, it's quite a disconcerting sound, makes me feel quite uneasy! I'd love to hear what the Aggie head sounds like through this rig, it's been on my GAS list for a while now. Matt

Well I've been waiting impatiently for a while now and they've finally arrived and i couldn't be any happier. thought i'd do a short unboxing photo stream to show them off, well if people start web pages to show the unboxing of an iphone then these cabs deserve a thread. this is what was torturing me for 2 hours at work this afternoon. this is what greets you when you carefully break the seal on the top of the box one cab unpacked and a quick view of the back and the quality control tag the pair waiting for a head and the full rig. to say that I'm happy is an understatement! Matt
taxi driver, technical director (guitars, amps, PA and recording kit), and tea boy (we're so rock and roll that we start each rehersal with mugs of tea and biscuits)

the singer/guitarist covers the rest, our drummer is notoriously disorganised although he did a top job of being my best man!

Matt

Oo - Er! Where can you get these facially unadorned small persons from, and isnt it politically correct to call them "vertically challenged people"?
i have had to be very careful about facebook postings! i've got a fedex tracking number now, expecting delivery first thing tomorrow! Matt

i was once offered a mex precision with Stings signature on the scratchplate, trouble was that no-one had peeled the protective plastic off before it was signed and the signature was wearing off quite badly! i offered him about 250 quid for the bass (without the scratchplate) as it played like a dog and needed some serious setting up and some new strings, the owner declined my offer and put it on gumtree for £1000 and as far as i know he still has it (about 4 years later!) Matt

that's a great looking rig! i'm hoping i can post a similar picture very soon with my Precision sitting next to a pair of Barefaced Midgets, i've been told that they're ready, the anticipation is killing me! Matt

bought a pair of guitar Pickups from Ted, couldn't have been smoother! great communication and fast postage. trade with confidence! Matt

High end cab owners, your assistance please.
Matt P replied to Dave_the_bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Depending on timings i might travel down from the north east, i've got a bass being built by Jon Letts that i'm going to have to travel down to collect, so if my Barefaced Midgets turn up in time i might bring them along. i'd be happy to bring any north east based Bass chatters with me if theyt have cabs that you'd like to try (there were some bergs and aggies at the northeast bass bash recently) Matt -
I'll take them if the sale doesn't go through for whatever reason (or the buyer doesn't get on with them).
i've just paid for them, they're for my friends guitar but if he doesn't get on with them i'll let you know and pass them on. Matt

+1 on a Yamaha, I've got an rbx765 which I paid 120 quid for, cracking bass, the rbx775 is just as nice and comes in slightly more metal colours. Matt

why do so many bass players drive a Ford Focus?
Matt P replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
I had a mk1 focus till a few days ago, I loved it, swapped it for a mk3 mondeo which isn't quite as much fun but It's wide enough to get 2 hiscox bass cases across the boot along with my rig and pedalboard and a week's food shopping and still get 5 people in the cabin. Might get a mk2 focus estate next year though. Matt -
I'm going to recommend Jon Letts again, probably with a shorter scale (31" ish?) a single pickup passive bass is within your budget and he can build it to suit your needs. they really are the lightest basses i've come across. if you're lucky he might offer another set of basses at cost price (i believe the 4 string one was 400 quid on the last offer!) here's a link to the deluxe 4 string that he's got up for sale now, bear in mind that this one has added gold bling and a 3 band aggie preamp, so if you went for a more subdued spec it would be cheaper. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/176511-lettsbasses/page__view__findpost__p__1923339 matt

Jon Letts has a singlecut 4 string on his website, I've played it and it's about the lightest best balanced and most killer sounding bass ever, if I needed a 4 string I would have bought it on the spot. I would post a link but I'm on my phone and it won't let me. Matt

It has been less than a week and already the waiting is killing me....
Matt P replied to Twigman's topic in Amps and Cabs
my midgets were ordered on the 15th(ish) of December and I'm still waiting, it is agonising though, i keep checking my email for a delivery tracking number (checking every hour or so) and every time a fed-ex van turns up at work i sit and watch in case 2 cab sized boxes appear. Matt -
Recommend me a Gibson E335 or Epiphone Casino type guitar!
Matt P replied to Musicman20's topic in Guitars
have you tried asking Brian at The guitar shop? (off high bridge) he's usually got a few pukka used gibson ones and they might just slip under your top price bracket, he's often got other nice semi-acoustics too at very sensible prices. I couldn't afford too much when i bought my 335 copy but managed to snag a mid 90's tanglewood cs-2 (chicago) a couple of years ago for 230 quid from a mates dad, really lovely guitar at bargain prices (much better than the current tanglewood chicago's) matt -
a quick scan of the classifieds throws up nothing under 100 quid but a few tasty heads for about 150, any of these would do the job brilliantly (and would reward a better cab one day as well) they would make great backups for your bh250 as well if you're allowed to borrow school equipment. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/199978-fs-gallien-krueger-700rb-l150/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175741-yamaha-bbt500h-amp-head-l150/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/199671-ashdown-abm-evoll-fs-l15000/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/181750-marshall-mb450h-l160ono-delivered-fsft/ i have no connection to any of the sellers (that i know of) Matt

instrument cables all snarled up, any tips?
Matt P replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
roadie wrap for me, i've got leads still going strong from when i started playing (about 1997 i think) i also love the velcro ties but have taken to making them myself, you can buy double-sided velcro tape (B+Q) which i then fasten to the lead by looping it round and putting a jeans stud through it, then carefully coil the cable and wrap round the tape, cut to a suitible length, one roll of the velcro is about 6 quid i think but it'll make loads of ties and each one is exactly the right size and can't go missing, i found that some of the ready made ones were 2 bits of velcro stuck together and in one or two cases the glue unstuck then smeared itself all over the cable. if anyone cares then i'll take a picture or 2 tonight to demonstrate (might even make set of pics showing the process if someone Really wants it) Matt -
They are fairly rare, our guitarist has one and I've not seen many other ones up for sale, the price is a bit heart stopping though, our guitarist paid 60 quid for his and it's in great nick and came with a stand, a strap and a lead. Matt
-
Definitely look at Letts, his prices are on his website but he's been known to offer discounts to basschat members. Matt

i'm taking notes here, i play in a 3 piece with my 2 best friends (mainly just for the shear joy of it) we play a mix of blues/rock/indie and have found that as long as we admit that we can't play all the parts almost any song can be done in our own style (quite ofetn ends up sounding a bit reggae in the pracices for some reason) , the main exception is the soul stuff which just sounds wrong without a horn section, we're tried but we just can't get it to work.
