Just bought a project Warwick rockbass Corvette from Rob and the whole deal was totally painless, it arrived quickly, well packed and exactly as described, deal with confidence in this fine gentleman. Matt

I don't have any experience of the Peavey basses, but someone on here will, have you run a search from the main page (box on the top right) that will throw up any post that mentions them, someone might have reviewed one. (the reviews section is very useful) matt

the bespeco one works without the battery, it only powers the LED, it's not the smallest but i've yet to break mine in about 10 years of stomping. a diy one could be built into a box not much bigger than a matchbox and would be much more rugged. Matt

this one would do the trick, http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Bespeco_VM22_Control_Pedal/BES-VM22 i've used one with my marshall for years, but i've also made a few for friends with locking detachable leads in nice metal cases (but with no led although that could be added easily enough) you only need very basic soldering skills to make one. i used these plugs for the lead at the box end. http://www.maplin.co.uk/audio-locking-connectors-chassis-plug-line-socket-997 it only needs a fairly basic cable too, i used 3A 2 way mains cable for the ones i made and 3 way for the double switch i made for a friends ea doubler. (i think the single button one worked out about the same price as the bespeco one but in a very solid box and with a long cable included.) Matt

whatever you end up buying i'd really recommend buying from the Basschat Classifieds, there are bargains galore to choose from, http://basschat.co.u...baretta-nt-l75/ this looks a bargain, even with a pro setup and a new set of strings it would still leave you with plenty of change. http://basschat.co.u...6-yamaha-bb300/ you can't really go wrong with a Yamaha, and this is a good example at a great price. http://basschat.co.u...q4pro-now-l170/ this ones been mentioned before but it's a great deal and a cracking bass. http://basschat.co.u...-epic-sad-face/ this one is a tiny bit higher than you wanted to spend but if it's anywhere near you then it's worth the extra (especially as it comes with a good gigbag. http://basschat.co.u...nyes-sgc-nanyo/ i saved this till last, the sgc Nanyo bass collection basses are superb and this one's in a good colour and at an amazing price. i have no connection to any of these sellers. but i've made plenty of deals on here and they've all been fantastic.
He has several threads to himself - start here: http://basschat.co.u...-its-him-again/
i have the misfortune to have the same initials as this guy but i promise to do my best not to butcher this fine bass but to restore it to a useable state. yeah that doesn't look like a fender headstock and that serial number would be either a '77-'78 USA bass or a '94-94/'04/'05 japanese bass so i'd guess the decal had been added on. (as if it was either of those options 170 quid would be a real bargain) seems a little odd to me to have 2 pickups and only 2 controls (that i can see), would expect 3, (either 2 volumes and tone control or a volume, a pickup blend and a tone) BUT just because it's not a Fender doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile purchase, have yu actually tried it out? if it plays well and sounds the way you want then it's worth getting, I'd haggle him down on the price a bit though, starting offer at 100 quid maybe? the Phil Jones Bass Buddy gets almost there, has 10W output but no drum machine. http://www.philjonespuresound.com/products/?id=2 Matt

for size i think this is the smallest, reports are that it's quite loud so would work perfectly. http://www.dv247.com/pa-systems-and-live-sound/mackie-srm150-compact-active-pa-system--39978 is he considering a hands free microphone too? leaving his hands free. (a wireless headset would be my choice as it will be harder to knock while handling animals)
If they're still in business!!
that's why i'm saving as hard as i can! i might go for a graft series as that would take me less time to save.

this just reinforces my belief that custom instruments are actually bargains, unfortunately i'm going to have to save for quite a while before i can order the Recurve Classic Single Cut 5 that i've got my heart set on, but I'll get there one day! Matt

i haven;t tried the powerball but i did buy a gripmaster a while back, and didn't get on with it at all, the guy in the climbing shop recommended one of these http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en-gb/shop/mountain/accessories/forearm-trainer it's great, they're cheap and smallish so i have one on my work desk, one at home and one in my bag, they're great for warming up when you haven't got an instrument in your hand, perfect for before sound check and then that gap between sound check and performance. or just as something to play with while on the phone or reading Basschat. typical, mind you having looked at the spec it seems to be a great amp! Matt

does the band have a rack already? or is it something you are planning on getting? if not then i'd be looking at a pedal option, probably one of the Tech 21 Character pedals that Mcgraham suggested. if there is a rack that has a space then i'd be looking for a tube guitar preamp, plenty of options available, personally i'm a marshall fan so would be looking for a jmp-1 or a 9004/9001. another option that i found was the Randall mts system, it's got swappable preamps (valve) the RM4 is a 4 bay rack that you simply fit 4 preamps into and it gives you switching options, they have a good range of different preamps that you can fit, fender, marshall mesa boogie etc, and they look great. matt

sorry if i missed this information but what is he currently playing through? does he need loads of presets and different amp sounds or just a good valve preamp (like the engl above)? if he's trying to replace his entire fx/amp/cab setup with a single box then there have been some good suggestions made already (a friend uses the line 6 stuff in his rock covers band and it sounds great). if it's just an amp that he wants to replace then a good preamp will do it, maybe a sansamp which would integrate nicely into a pedalboard? i've had loads of dicussions with guitarist friends (and am a guitarist myself) and the younger ones all seem to think they need the latest digital modelling amps with hundreds of presets, i usually lend them my tiny terror for a week and they change their minds! Having read this i think i'm going to put Newtone's at the top of my shopping list, i already use the Newtone Heritage balanced phosphor bronze strings on my acoustic guitar but it never occurred to me that they could do the same with Bass strings! Matt

i'll have to watch it on the iplayer, my wife is in the middle of decorating the living room and the telly's under a dust sheet till it's finished.

I've played a few and they have all delivered the goods, i had a Superfly for a while too, bought it new but never totally trusted it (i read a whole bunch of reviews before buying so went into the deal with open eyes) i loved the tone of the Superfly and the programmable EQ was excellent but it started getting noisy (high pitched whine) so i got the SWR Headlite instead and gave the Superfly away (to a friend who was starting out, i explained the amps shortcomings before i let him take it away). I'd go for a ABM if you can, they seem to be pretty bulletproof and Ashdown have a first rate reputation for customer service. quite a few of the practice rooms round here have Ashdown rigs and if they can survive that abuse then they can survive anything. the main thing is to buy from the classifieds here, you won't get better value from anywhere else! (and if you collect in person from the seller you might get a nice cup of tea and a biscuit while you try it out!) Mat

does it need to be clear for an amp? i'd go with a self build made of plywood with piano hinges maybe, and line it with some kind of dampening material. my church bought a drum screen to reduce the onstage volume and all it managed to do was reflect the drums back against a wall and make them very loud on the balcony (and deafening for the drummer, it was painful behind the kit even with a moderate drummer), we had to add some acoustic panels on the back wall to balance it all out (we ended up ditching the screen as it was easier to get the drummer to play quieter, which coupled with the acoustic panels sorted the volume problems.) having gone to the trouble of having my lighter bitsa made for gigging i actually used my 77 for the whole of my last gig, it just feels and sounds so right, i'm actually thinking of selling the bitsa to help fund a new cab or a better 5 string. i got through both sets with a big stupid grin on my face that wouldn't have been there with the bitsa and there was no pain the next morning.
