GHS and La Bella Strings UK distributor?
icastle replied to longtimefred's topic in General Discussion
Does anyone know who the main UK distributor for GHS and La Bella is? A friend of mine who owns a rehearsal / recording studio / a&r / band managment company wants to start selling quality strings and we are struggling to find where to buy them from with a trade account?
FCN are the UK importers for GHS La Bella used to be available through Strings & Things but that may have changed. -
1) Make sure you're in tune with the guitarist(s). 2) Keep the basslines simple - trying to be too 'flash' when you're nervous is a surefire way of falling over. 3a) Feel the rhythm of the tune, if the drummer is new then he might need to have a solid bassline to 'reattach' to if he loses his way. 3b) If the drummer is good enough to keep the rhythm steady then make sure you follow him. 4) Take a deep breath and try to stay relaxed, you've been up front with them and said you didn't feel ready so you've nothing to prove. 5) Don't worry about making mistakes, that's what everyone on here uses rehearsals for! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Depends on the degree of effort/expense I have to put in. I'm unlikely to drive 100 miles and spend the best part of a day setting up for nothing. We generally do a couple of fairly local charity gigs per year - they pay us a few quid for petrol and we just quietly give it back via one of the donation buckets. I do a few plug n play nights a month and don't get paid for those unless I'm playing with a headline act. One rule I've always had though, my 'proper job' pays the regular bills, it does not subsidise new instruments or any other musical paraphenalia - if I want a new piece of kit then I have to earn that money through playing.
I would of been the same though and done the same as far as the gentle letdown.
+1 I can't think of a time when there's ever a need to be 'nasty' to anyone who hasn't come up to scratch in an audition. Much respect and kudos to leschirons for handling it so well.

Sounds to me like her drum tutor has done her a great disservice at the expense of her confidence and wasted your time as well...
then again i could learn to play cack handed i spose
That'd depend on the level of cack you can cope with.

1) The nut will need replacing. 2) The intonation will be shot unless you either replace or do some woodwork on the bridge. 3) If it's an electroacoustic then all of the controls will be on the underside of the body 4) The internal bracing will be all wrong as well (LH and RH guitars are braced differently). 5) Removing the pickguard will probably leave a witness mark on the soundboard. I'd be more inclined to buy a RH instrument in the first place. Any savings you might make by buying a LH guitar will probably be wiped out by the conversion attempt.
I think you're right, I'll post one up tonight, but I'll have to work on it another night as I have recording I need to practice for on my working bass ;-)
Well don't be tempted to go anywhere near that bass with a screwdriver...
Wonder if anyone can help. I've got a 60th Anniversay Jazz, which was absolutely fine until recently. During the last couple of gigs, the E-string is as loud as ever, but the other 3 strings are probably less than half the volume and just do not cut through. I've had a look at the electrics and everything seems fine. I also know its not the amp as my other guitars are OK. Has anybody else had this problem? Can anyone help?!
It's unlikely to be an electrical problem, but not impossible. The first thing I'd try though would be to replace the strings with a new set. If that makes no difference then check the spacing between the strings and the pickups - try tightening the screw on the 'E end' of the pickups (moving the pickup away from the E string).
Right I have completely re wired and used better cables on this bass, and it still hums.. not as bad, but not great. I'm gonna try and check each negative wire that goes to ground now... God help me.. Bass for sale :-)
It's going to be one of the negative wires causing the problem. If that doesn't work, how about posting a couple of pics of the cavity wiring?
Hi, Cheers for the quick response but they are for the Fender Jaguar guitar with the 2 single coil pickups. Im really after a black-white-black 3 ply bass version. Anywhere else?
The only other place I can think of is Aurora. They don't stock a Mustang scratchplate but they can make one from a template or the original and they don't charge extra for doing it!

Not a huge choice of colours, but Allparts do them here...

I have a letter from my doctor stating I have atheletes mouth, so I'm exempt from having a microphone.

I thought you were gonna say that Dr Hinge had redesigned your splint to make it easier to play!

A young guy in last nights support band was using one of these - had me a little confused for a while, it looked like an MM from a distance but didn't sound quite 'right'. It was however, a reasonable instrument, and he was quite happy playing it. For £50 it sounds like a bargain, as long as you're not expecting a 100% authentic MM type sound.
Im about to take on a 2x15 Laneyt bass cab after chasing a 2x15 for ages. It has the usual black metal grille on the front and my question is.....if i cover this grille in a reto looking silvery speaker cloth will this effect the sound/efficiency of the cab? Was thinking of usuing a spray adhesive onto the grille (obviosuly while off the cab) and pressing it down onto a length of retro speaker cloth before cutting to size etc
It won't have any noticeable effect on the efficiency or sound of the cab. I suspect though that the shape of the metal grille will show through.
So I hunted around for lightweight bass, and found myself a Ibanez SR500. Not only does it weigh only 7lbs, I was staggered as to how it feels to play. It feels like you are playing a guitar rather than a bass, and the reach is similar to a shortscale bass.
+1 I've used a 505 as my main gigging instrument for quite a few years now and totally agree with the above.

Hearing your rig played by another bass player
icastle replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've generally found it to be the other way round, although in fariness, I know my rig far better than someone just borrowing it for a couple of numbers! -
Erm - looking at the spec of the HB4 it only weighs about 8.5lbs. There's a thread on here discussing different weight basses and the lightest one's are coming in at about the 8lb mark... To be honest, I don't really see the point in butchering an instrument that only weighs 8.5lbs to begin with...
I took the amp back for a refund as the vibrations just aren't on. Guy at the shop made me laugh though. He said the amp should only be this loud (quiet enough to talk over comfortably) as its only a practice amp! Where do they find these people!
A 200W 'practice amp' with a 15" speaker? Yeah. Right...

Once a week to either work on new additions to the set, sort out any glitches that may have appeared in the existing material or to agree new material. For me as an individual, I generally end up playing for a couple of hours most days.

You can pretty much guarantee that hacking lumps of wood out of any acoustic or semi acoustic instrument is going to screw up the sound. There's also a really good chance that you'll damage the mechanical integrity of the instrument as well. Removing lumps of wood from the back of the bass is not going to have a significant impact on the weight of the instrument. Just buy a light weight instrument if you think it's that important!
