noticed this deal on thomann, wondering if anybody had any experience with this cab or the amp head and if it's worth the money (seems like a good deal to me) http://www.thomann.de/gb/warwick_profet_33_bundle_3.htm
I haven't tried their heads but I use their cabs on a regular basis. They're sturdy, well built and sound fine (to me).
I noticed the other day that my rack tuner (korg DTR1000) has red LEDs and my LMIII has a blue LED. This sounds really picky and OCD, but is it possible to change the LEDs in the Korg from red to blue, so that they match? I know a blue LED display version of the Korg exists, so would it be as simple as just switching the bulbs?
That's a tough question. Anything that has been manufactured can be dismantled and altered (given time and patience) but it really is dependant on the mechanical and electronic skills of the person making the change plus the availability of suitable parts. I would guess that the tuner is not densely packed (it's just a guitar tuner in a 19" rack case after all). If you do decide to go down the 'upgrade' route then you will need some serious soldering skills and need to be aware that LEDs are polarised (i.e. on a single mode LED they will only work if the leads are connected the right way round). Personally I'd leave it alone or use Happy Jack's suggestion - you got any Quality Street wrappers left over from xmas?
i've done a fair bit of PA in my time... .and cutting the bass like that is one way of doing it.... but it will give you a 'certain' bass sound, a sound that I for one could not stand. If you are cutting the bottom end like that no change of cabs will help you.... you need to tell him to work a bit harder to come up with a solution that works.... it is possible to do a live mix with a scooped bass tone, you just have to do it differently to a more middy bass mix.... i aim to get everything balencing in the mix so nothing needs to 'cut through' bacause everything is ballenced. playing with the guitar sounds (presuming you have electric guitar) is where i would start rather than emasculating the bass's bassyness
+1 I do a regular stint as the sole bass player at a plug and play night. The guy on the desk there has a particular idea of how bass is supposed to sound that simply does not match mine (since when does an EUB sound 'right' with lows and mids cut and treble boosted?!? ). Playing the same instrument in front of many of the same audience and in the same lineup sounds good at other P&P nights. I got so sick of people coming up to me and saying "you sounded really funny tonight" that I mentioned it to the sound guy on numerous occasions and he paid no attention whatsoever. My solution to it in the end was perhaps a little drastic - I now use my full rig and if the sound guy comes anywhere near it with an XLR cable I tell him to f*** off. One of my mates gives me hand signals and I use those to control my volume levels and the "you sounded really funny tonight" comments then stopped. Unfortunately, the sound guy has now started screwing around with the monitor mix to make things difficult... so I unplug my monitor before starting.
If I were to set up two bass amp rigs to play through at the same time, say one clean and one completely with effects could I just use a d.i box at the beginnig of the effects chain with an xlr to jack cable and go straight into the input of the head on the second rig, and just do as normal with the first rig? I can't think of a reason why I couldn't but am not an expert. I already have a DHA DI that I haven't even used so would be using this box.
Yep, provided your DI box has two outputs that's totally do-able
Surely adding speakers increases power handling however they are wired? After all, if you add a second cab (wired in parallel to the first cab) you will handle more power, won't you?
Nope. Each speaker will still have the same wattage if wired in parallel - in series you just add up all the wattages and that's what your power handling is. Best example I can think of off the top of my head is the old fashion xmas tree lights - loads of little 6V bulbs wired in series and able to run off of 240V. If you wired each bulb in parallel (like your house lights are) each 6V bulb gets 240V... but not for very long...
Just wondering, on the Aguilar website it says that the GS410 is 4 or 8 ohm, may be a daft question but does that mean you must order one or the other or will the one cab do both?
My understanding is that they make two models - a 4Ω model or an 8Ω model.

Anyone else mount strap button on lower horn?
icastle replied to topo morto's topic in General Discussion
I'd have thought that the bass would have a tendency to flip if you did that. How about just shortening the strap and changing the neck angle you play at? -
Indicate to him that you are not obliged to issue a refund until the item is returned to you, that no refund will be considered until that time, and that funds in prospect of any full or partial refund will not be entrusted to escrow.
Absolutely +1. Escrow scams are becoming a common fraud tool. I could set up a convincing looking Escrow service and persuade you to use it 'as a safeguard for you'. I might try a little social conditioning and recommend one Escrow service (a legitimate one) and then quickly tell you afterwards that I've heard 'bad things about it' and one of my mates has recommended a much better one with lower charges... (mine!) Once I have your money I close it down and walk off with your cash. What are you going to do about it? You're on the other side of the world, don't speak Argentinian and would be unlikely to persuade Argentinian law officers to take an interest in your story...

The higher the reputation the more you need to keep a sense of balance - it's a long way to fall otherwise. -
IIRC Marlin were Korean made and imported through John Hornby Skewes back in the late 80's. I think they later dumped that brand and concentrated on their 'Encore' stuff as their budget range. Best thing I can say about them is that they quite often worked sometimes... EDIT: There was also a range of kit manufactured by Carlsboro called Marlin as well but I don't remember much about it.
Hi, if the cab has four 8ohm speakers you could have it rewired to 2ohms by putting them all in parallel.
Probably not. I'm guessing that for a 4x10 200W 8Ω cab they are probably wiring two 100W 8Ω speakers in series and then paralleling those with the other two speakers (also in series). If you have two 100W speakers in series you can put 200W through them - If you take the same two speakers and wire them in parallel you can only put 100W through them. Put the whole lot in parallel and you will only be able to handle 100W.
Hi, if I want to increase neck relief by loosening the truss rod, is it necessary/recommended to slacken the strings first?
Nope If you're slackening the truss rod you are allowing the strings to pull the neck forwards (thus decreasing the string tension).
Just picked up a used Aguilar cab and it dounds really distorted on the low notes. One thing I noticed was that the material inside seems to be hanging down in front of the ports (see pics) - could this have something to do with it? Steve
The wadding is used to reduce the resonance of the cab - it shouldn't be able to produce distortion. BUT - if it's hanging down like that then the chances are that someone has been inside the cab - it would be well worth taking a look inside the cab and having a tidy up while you are there...
I took the original post to mean that the buyer was saying this was not a genuine Gibson serial number, which in fact it is. Whether its applied to a genuine Gibson might be another matter, but its not a fake serial number.
Yep - that's why I was careful about how I worded my response and asked what else the buyer claims is wrong...
Hi again - doesn't sound harsh at all, I've been scammed before and I'm not about to be suckered again if I can help it. Any and all advice that will make sure I don't get done on most welcome!
What were the other reasons he gave that makes him suspect it's a fake?
-
Aye, thanks for that - I just found that info at guitar dater. I'm thinking the guy has received bad advice or is trying to scam me. Not least because I bought, played and enjoyed the guitar myself with no suspicions at all. I'm no expert, but have been playing since the 70's and had no concerns at all about the authenticity of the guitar.
I'm of the mind that refunding the money will result in loss of the money and the guitar as the buyer has moved to t'other side of the world and it's unlikely that you'll be able to track him down. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it does sound like a scam in the making...
Hi Guys, I'll cut a long story short here - in December last year I sold what I believed to be a genuine Gibson Les Paul. The buyer has now come back to me and is claiming the serial is a fake. Before I refund his money and take back possession of the guitar I'd like to check as best I can that he is at least, in turn, being honest with me. The serial number in question is as follow: 80645481
According to an online checker, that serial number indicates that it belongs to a guitar made at the Kalamazoo Plant on March 5th, 1985. What are the other items he claims are fake? My gut reaction is that refunding money to Argentina will result in the loss of your money and the guitar.
Just hypothetically, I wonder if it might have been possible to resin the strap lock button onto the screw then turn the button like a giant screw head? Don't know if resin glues are strong enough.
I suspect that the screw would have just turned in the resin cavity created by the screw.
Seems like a fair assumption. I mean, I've got a few sets and not one of them looks like a mole. Most look like a bit like Ridley Scott's (H.R.Giger's) Alien to me. My most useful set are long-nosed and look like a pterodactyl and another sort of unusual set I have looks more like a big fat turtle's head. So I don't know where moles come into it.
Mole is a misused brand name (just like 'hoover' and 'biro') - the first one's were designed by a company called... Mole.
