In truth, my main concern is not doubling of instruments, which I find a reasonable proposition, but doubling (or more!) of styles. I love classical music, jazz, rock, sould, pop, reggae, funk, latin, you name it. I was at a folk session today and it was great. But you could easily spend a lifetime dedicated to just one of these styles! How to be able to play them all to the level the deserve is a continuing puzzle.
Totally with you on that one! I guess I break down to three distinct levels: 1) I have particular musical 'likes' and those are what people assess my capabilities on. This is the sort of stuff that I listen to because I enjoy it. 2) I have 'this does nothing for me' musical styles that I really have to work hard at to hit a level where I'm comfortable that other people are happy that I'm 'delivering the goods'. This would be the sort of stuff that drones on in the background and doesn't catch my attention or interest. 3) I also have a few 'not only does this do nothing for me but I really detest this' type styles. that's the sort of stuff that'd make me turn the radio off. Funnily enough, after 25 years or so of saying "no thanks", I don't get offered those jobs any more so I don't worry about them! Yep - I've carved myself a little 'niche' but it's a fairly comfortable one with an odd s t r e t c h y bit thrown in from time to time to keep me on my toes...
Name drop time! I just took Mrs C out into the smoke for our traditional sw***y (deliberately used work as it triggers profanity filter!) pre-Christmas night out. This time we tried The Wolseley, next to The Ritz. Sat between tables including artist Lucien Freud and historian Lady Antonia Fraser and who should walk in and sit just behind us, with girlfriend and kids in tow? Yep, Sade!
Did she start hassling you for your autograph? Hate it when celebs do that to me... ...I'll get me doggy bag...

I have to lug all mine upstairs and store it in the music room (one of the few cat free rooms in the house). I've got a 40'x20' brick built outhouse in the back garden which I'm planning on converting into a studio this coming summer.
It's a good bass, I had one for a long time - but mine was tonally very different from a 'ray or the Fenders. I found it just too dark for my tastes even after I swapped out the pickups, and I ended up getting jazz basses instead which made me a very happy Larry. Most important to me would be whether I wanted a jazz, precision or stingray tone, or something a bit different.
Yep - I have a JB as well and I'm almost convinced that a 'ray might be a good idea but am struggling to justify the expenditure after this years rig refresh.
(Need something with a very variable tone - as I play pretty much anything that I think sounds awesome)
If you're looking new then perhaps consider trying out the Ibanez SR 500 - Bartolini pups and tone control come fitted as standard. I've had a 5 string one of these for about 5 years now and haven't been tempted away from it yet You usually get more bass for your £ by buying SH, I'd say be very careful about using Ebay for SH bass purchases though. Although I haven't used it yet, there are some pretty good deals in the For Sale forum here on BassChat and you can be pretty damn sure that the item is genuine. As always though, you really need to try kit out and decide what works for you and your playing style(s).

Bleedin' heck Minkey - how big's your house?!?
Though I think the track is nice enough I'd never even noticed that bass bit in it! The live youtube track I listened to/watched also threw me as I initially didn't identify the bass from it's tone, then I saw that it was a Ray. Just goes to show that a Ray isn't necessarily a 1-trick-pony (just mho), especially with a bit of chorus etc.
That's my definition of the ultimate bass line - you kinda know it's there, but it's so tightly integrated into the whole piece of music that you don't really notice it. Could almost say it's made from pure antislapper...
Went to a party a while ago and this came on.....A Mark King WOW to this.. what an amazing bass line...didnt everyone get up and dance... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9gKLAKBLu8
I saw them live back in the 80's but can't admit to being a Level 42 fan I'm afraid - just doesn't do it for me at all and never did! That makes it two 'hits' and a 'miss' today by my reckoning
Hi all, I have recently started playing bass after a fair while of playing in an acoustic duo. I decided to go fretless because I just love the sound. I am looking to get a gigging amp as I don't want to always play through the PA (as I do at present). Any ideas (nothing too big or heavy) on something to compliment to fretless sound? Thanks Blademan
Is this amp for use in your acoustic duo or are you looking to use it in a somewhat louder setting?
I've never understood why people who write bass books cannot just split tab and notation into two sections.
How about fitting two books into one? Hold the book one way and you have the notation version. Flip it over so the reverse cover becomes the front cover and you have the tab version?

How hot? -
Think you need to think about what the target audience for the book is. If you're aiming it to sell to the music 'purists' or to the educational/student market then you probably could do without it. If you're aiming at the general 'man in a band' type market then you'd be commiting commercial suicide by not putting it in! Personally I'm not a great fan of tab, but provided the book was a balance between tab and notation I'd be happy to dip into the parts that I wanted to know about...
christ who cares if she got a "very very limited vocal range" (which i dont agree with) its the music thats important.....What because shes black she is supposed to sing like Aretha...? i was expecting a little credit for an artist who has been going for 25 years+ and still writing...
Based on the material I have heard, I'd say that she does appear to have a limited vocal range, but one that works well with the material she is presenting. As an analogy, Rembrandt had a limited pallette of colours to work from and he did just fine with it - giving him pots of dayglow pink and yellow would just be stupid. Sade mixed Soul and R&B together, and added a few other musical genres, to make a sound that I personally find quite pleasing. I have never been a fan of Soul or R&B and therefore have absolutely none in my music collection - that's a personal taste thing and absolutely nothing to do with ethnicity. I do have some Sade.
All my information-cards,website etc,-mention that I play both. In fact, the vast majority of people I work for are aware that I can double. It's just that there are some people who you meet on,say,a jazz gig,who will only ever book you as an upright player,as they have never seen you play electric, and vice versa, and it may not come up in conversation. It's the same way as some people can view you as a rock player or a jazzer or whatever, when that is only a small part of what you do.
Yep. That's a pretty universal problem. French musician Sacha Distel was famous for his singing but many people are unaware that he was a fantastic guitarist!
