2.
How many people on here regularly get hired to play both electric and upright bass? Have you found that playing both has increased your workload?
Upright is a fairly new addition to my 'skillset'. There was an initial surge of interest off the back of my electric work but things have settled back down to about 70/30 in favour of the electric bass now.
 3.
Hey guys, Just thought I'd get a discussion going on the above topic as just lately the drummer from my tribute band has been driving me insane! He is also my best friend and even though this has never harmed that, it bugs the hell out of me! Nearly every gig he spouts the same "urgh not looking forward to the gig" even if it's at a great venue or with a big crowd guaranteed. He's the most lethargic drummer ever I am weird for looking forward to playing every gig?! (Around 50/60 a year) Do any of you not look forward to playing gigs?
He's probably either excited and trying not to show it (and massively overcompensating) or nervous and trying to act as though he's not (and getting it wrong!). Everyone deals with stress in different ways - his way of dealing with it may bug you, but the way you deal with it may bug someone else. Humans are strange things
 4.
how high has he got that stingray????
Many bassists seem to have confused 'bass guitar' with 'necklace' in that decade I wonder how many 'necklace slappers' got a face full of busted G string after an over enthusiastic pop? As for Sade, very limited vocal range but some very good tunes I thought.
 5.
Far Corporation. An un-named bunch of Machiavellian chancers, they played their cover version down the phone to Robert Plant and asked him what he thought of the song and what they should call the band. They thought he replied "Far Corp". This may not be entirely historically accurate.
6.
should I be worried about these white patches of skin?
Nah - the black patches will soon overtake them
 7.
Anyone tried one of these wierd creatures? I'll have to go back to the shop to give it a go.
Yes. It's one of those things that you either love or hate I found the transition from the fretted to unfretted areas of the neck were just too much of a jarr - it just wasn't for me.
 8.
yeah but i would prob get a virus before i could get to send it..
Use protection and be a bit choosy about where you stick it then!
 9.
All the same, his advice was technically incorrect. The fact that the amp blew that day was most likely pure coincidence, unless it's one of the few SS amps with an output transformer
+1 MKIIIs are around 30 years old now so, in fairness, it was probably due a bit of a breakdown Nothing in the user manual to suggest running it without a load isn't allowed - most manuals I've come across warn about running without a load if it's going to be detrimental to the amp: http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature/manuals/80300959.pdf I think that OPs amp tech made a mistake.
 10. Ok, I'll give it a go. Not necessarily a great moment in the history of music, just something that made me quite proud. Back in the mid 1980s I was invited back for a second audition with a fairly well known folk rock band but had decided that I wanted to leave the music business and get the stability of full time work. I apologised to them and explained the reasons why - they were very understanding and we parted very amicably. A week later I had a call from their guitarist asking if I'd be prepared to dep for another band who were mates of theirs - the band were on tour and their bass player had been rushed into hospital with appendicitis. I agreed. The following night I was standing on stage, curtains drawn, a seated audience of 500+ waiting for the show to start. Curtains drew back to a rousing round of applause as we started playing and the lights came up. I could see the first three or four rows of the audience - nudging each other and looking at me - "who the bloody hell is that?" After the intro song the singer briefly explained to the audience what had happened and who I was - I got a polite, somewhat restrained, round of applause and the show continued. The gig went well, we got to the end of the night and did the usual "on drums we have..." routine - everyone getting a massive round of applause from an appreciative audience - at this point I was nervous and I never get nervous! This was a band I'd admired for years, how bl**dy embarassing could this turn out to be? The singer drew a breath and introduced me - a round of applause as big as everyone else had got I was so proud I almost burst out laughing! Then she told them that I'd only played with them for the first time that afternoon. 500+ people stood up and raised the roof... 25 years later and that still has to be the best night ever, even if I did desperately hope that the stage trapdoor would open and give me somewhere to run to!
 11.
I know what the seller needs.
12.
Well it all turned out ok in the end. Wasn't as cold as expected, though fingers felt like blocks of ice after first 2 numbers, then they weirdly warmed up!
That'll be the hypothermia kicking in
 13. Good Grief! I can't decide if it needs a luthier or a forensic scientist.
 14.
Other people think I'm good, but when I play by myself at home I often think I suck really badly. All I know is that I like to play and others like playing with me, so I'm going to go with those thoughts.
15.
perhaps they just didn't like the idea of someone taking their art in vain.
Hmmm - my recollection of them was that I found that the album covers were far more interesting than the contents...
 16.
Not so tidy shot of the inside of my Roscoe… That blob of solder in the middle of the shot has wire coming from it to each pot… I assume a similar set up on the RIM would be a good idea?
Yep - I certainly would. The rule of thumb is that you can't technically 'over earth' guitar electronics.
 17.
There's way too much humility creeping back into this thread. Pretend you're American.
Ok. Mods: Please cancel Low End Bee's account Swedish Embassy: please start extradition proceedings - evidence will be in the post as soon as we've made some. UK Government - SHUT IT! or we'll send the lads round. Everyone else - Nothing to see here, move along...
 18.
Hmmm, interesting. So if it had a minimum load of 6 ohms an 8 ohm speaker could be alright. I've got a multimeter in the post so will find out for sure after i've had a play around.
Yep. Modern 'off the shelf' replacement speakers of the size you are looking for only come in three impedances: 4Ω - well below the minimum impedance of the amp and carries a high risk of damaging it. 8Ω - nearest value to the 6Ω minimum impedance of the amp. 16Ω - would work fine but output would be reduced. With the multimeter, as I said before - make sure at least one of the leads running back to the amp are disconnected before you try measuring the speaker. I'd not come across the trick of multiplying the read value by 1.3 before, but it works really well
 19.
There is a large amount of wiring missing from there… Pic was taken before pickups were installed… The Aguliar pre is earthed to the jack (as per the wiring instructions with the pre) and not to the copper shielding (which is for outside interference). Updated pics as it stands today And may I add that Robbie has done a wicked tidy job of wiring that pre up with those pups in what is really quite a small control cavity!
Very tidy looking job. None of the pots are earthed though?
 20.
Why does nobody use 18" speakers anymore ? I used to use an 18" Goodmans and a Marshall 4X12 at one time, and it was truly, awsome. But then I stopped playing for a few years, and when I started again 18s seem to have dissapeared.
You can still buy the drivers, albeit not as many option as there used to be. 18" bass cabs have pretty much faded out of the bass guitar market - too damn big
 21.
Way back in the mid/late seventies I remember a case reported in the NME where Led Zeppelin prevented someone covering Stairway to Heaven, on the grounds that it was derogatory. I can't remember whether it had actually been released or was about to be released, but I do remember that the journalist wasn't overjoyed with the news as he thought it was a good version. I don't remember who was responsible for the cover, and don't think I'd ever heard of them even at the time.
It's been covered loads of times - even Rolf Harris and Dolly Parton have done covers of it! I remember one done back in the 80's that was a cut down version and far shorter than the original, but I think they were a 'one hit wonder' whose name escapes me.-
 22.
I have a rare can of vintage switch cleaner, never been gigged, which I found in my uncle's loft. It may have been owned by John Entwistle, but who can say? A guy at the music shop said it was a prototype of the highest-quality switch cleaner ever invented. It has the rare "transition" logo that says "Made In China". I'll start the bidding at £120 ...
23.
There were some lights but just on or off, no dimmer. My RIM Marseer. Delano HS pups, Aguilar pre But only having that issue in that venue....? The bass performs fine in the studio, home and 2 other venues so far...
There's loads of stuff that could have been responsible for it - even something as daft as a beer pump living on the same ring main could do it (does this in my local in fact!). If your bass is not particularly well shielded it can act as a big aerial for any electronic noise that's floating around.
 24.
Who thinks they know what is the best configuration, and why?
Everyone has a different take on this, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' answer. It all depends on what you are looking for sound wise, the practicalities of moving this stuff to a venue and if you want flexibility. I wanted flexibility so I went for a 2x10 and a 1x15. Gives me the degree of punch I want from the 2x10 plus a nice bottom end from the 1x15. It gives me flexibility (so for smaller venues I use the 2x10 on it's own or the 1x15 on its own if I want to run an EUB through it). It'll also all fit in my car
 25.
Something to do with earthing in the bass or a dodgy pot. At this point another bassist arrives and we try his bass. No problem. That solves it. The amp is fine and it's the bass.
Yep. You've pretty much eliminated the amp and cables from the scenario. Your bass has either got a bad earth joint or shielding that isn't up to scratch. You're going to have to go digging around inside and look for bad or suspect looking joints as a first step and if that doesn't provide an answer you're going to have to look at the shielding.
