Band Break-Up Issue (Selling and Splitting the PA)
icastle replied to neptunehealer's topic in General Discussion
Really you need to find someone who already has an amp and a mixer and needs speakers.
Well... there is this guitarist he knows... -
It looks like one of those 'cold war Russian' things that were manufactured from nothing more than a photograph.
Well, they all sound pretty flimsy excuses to me
They do, but put them on a half decent stand and they'll be OK...
-
All he's doing is playing the string really hard on a low action setup.

Well, provided his valuations are realistic, it sounds perfectly reasonable to me. -

£63 is an extremely odd number. Sounds to me as if he's already done some research to have come up with a number like that. -
Failing to prepare is the same as preparing to fail.
+1 IMO, for the couple of minutes it takes to pack a spare it's daft not to.

Piano, Cello and Bass....suggestions for something to play?

Eleanor Rigby? -
So it's a Fender Jazz. Apart from the body. And the pickups. And possibly the neck.
None of these seem to work the Fender and rane sites come up 404 not found and the other one does not exist
Those ones don't - the ones on the main list (on page 1) do. -
Dummy Amp stack. Where to rent in the UK?
Unfortunately, in the real world, there will always be some resistance and some capacitance.
+1 And in the real world a splodgin of capacitance and resistance is going to make b*gger all difference. It's always been the way and it was never perceived as a 'problem' until marketing people told us it was - we've just compensated without realising it by using tone and volume controls.

Noise has always been an issue at these gatherings. I worked in the MI industry some 30 years ago and it was an issue back then at the BMF - although frantic slapping and 1000w amplifiers certainly weren't 'the norm' back then. The noisiest days were the ones where the doors were opened to 'punters' (as opposed to the MI trade) and attempts to control that failed miserably year after year. Fast forward 30 years and the same problem remains - as soon as you charge punters an entry fee they have expectations, and if that expectation is to bash a fingerboard senseless at a volume that is approaching that of a WMD, then that's what happens. My solution as an exhibitor was to put cotton wool in my ears on those days (earplugs weren't about back then).
Needs more cowbell
You cannot just walk in here and say that... ...you have to write a protest song about it...

You can't beat a good protest song.
No im not but lets have a think about this one. There are probably more bass players who would pick a valve amp over a solid state one at the same price point.
'Probably' doesn't really cut it though. Look at what you can get for £200 in valve amps and then see what you can get for £200 in solid state. There's absolutely no way that the target market is going to select the valve amp.
Many people buy small practice amps and as seen in guitar land there is a big market for the old style small valve combo's.
The guitar market is different. A small amp that you can crank up and get tube distortion at a sensible volume is a seller, but not in the majority of the bass market.
Many little solid state amps and large ones too have a tube emulation feature which for the most part get it wrong. Little modelling combo's have features that try emulate other all tube amps.
Indeed they do.
So why not just make a small valve combo at a price point?. I don't expect this to be the greatest thing ever or to out sell all other amps but fact is its a viable option.
First problem is that your price point is way too low. There are increased component and engineering costs plus a higher failure rate that needs to be factored in - and that's before you even look at how you compete in a market already saturated with solid state kit. It's commercial suicide. I know you'd like it to be a viable option but the reality is that if it actually was, then it would already be out there.
-
I suspect you're not following a career in marketing...
-
Yeah i get that, but say thomann sold one you then have a world wide audience for them.
But the same goes for any other manufacturer.
Plus since there isn't any at present. And people love that kinda thing im pretty sure there is a good market for them.
You have to look at this from a commercial perspective. If there was indeed a market for it then the opportunity would have been grabbed. The fact that it hasn't means that either every amp manufacturer has missed the opportunity, or there's no demand for it. I know which one is most likely.
-
The reason nobody makes them is that there's no real market for them. Before anyone says it, half a dozen people on a bass forum doesn't equate to a market in commercial terms.
-
There's not any easy way of checking that yourself, but... Doing a search, your first advert seems to have been for this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/218164-fsft-crafter-gae648cdn-electro-acoustic-guitar-l150, so I'd guess your subscription expired 12 months later?

would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
icastle replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't entertain being in a band with a bad drummer. I'd hate every second.
You mean every second ± 15% ? -
How about this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-6w-acdc-multi-voltage-power-supply-ug01b

Harmonics on the 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th frets should be dead easy. If you're trying to get them on the third fret then unless you're using new strings, forget it.
