but I always advise students to become an active musician and try applying the stuff they're learning in a practical/musical setting, not just in their lesson.
Couldn't agree more with this. We have a number of Rock School students in my local area - I've seen them playing in a "classroom environment" from time to time and they're reasonable. The best one by far though is a young lad who has struggled time and time again to pass his exams but has been a regular at one of the "plug n play" nights for the last couple of years - he's still at school and his Dad has to bring him. Now he is going to be a superb player in a few years. Rock School and others have a valid place in providing the techniques and theory, but actually "doing it" adds the flexibility, flow and feel that you can't be taught.
I do find it amusing that some of us poor people have to make do with knackered old basses, whereas some rich people are prepared to spend alot of money getting the same effect faked
Yep. I can remember a few years ago there was actually a company selling spray on mud so that yuppies in London could get a "country cred" look on their 4x4's without having to leave the city...
HI Ian, Took me a while to take the plunge and get onto basschat so welcome. I also have an ESP Ltd 6 which I bought 2nd hand from ebay. It was my initiation into 6 stringers and have since managed to persuade my wife to buy me an Overwater fretless 6 for my 50th. I found the ESP spacing a little narrow compared to my other basses. You do get used to whatever you have but I kept missing the strings with my right hand when playing faster runs across strings. Not an issue with my Overwater which has same string spacing as my Warwick. Other than that it has a nice low growl from B & E strings. Doesn't cut through very well in a rock band set up although to be fair I didn't spend a lot of time setting amp correctly. All best Dave
Hi Dave, You really MUST have a chat with my wife... I do have a tendency to miss the G if I play faster runs but I just blame the drummer... I use mine mostly in folk rock type setups so it's a little bit more forgiving than in a full on "in yer face" rock setup - I tend to use the Ibanez for that sort of thing because I can play it without thinking about it.
Been reading a lot about this amp. Seems to be a favourite amongst the forum, but is it enough to gig with, both in terms of FOH and as my monitor? I've been thinking about getting a practice/home/headphone amp, but if the Studio 110 could do it all then that would be great! Could it replace my TNT150? Thanks
This is probably where I get screamed at , but this is my experience with Line6 kit... About a month ago I refreshed my backline and ordered an LD750 head and an S110 combo. The rationale was that I could use the LD750 whilst gigging (I was totally sold on the ability to preset tones for different instruments and recall them at the push of a button) and the S110 would be great for studio use. The kit arrived on a Friday and was hastily checked (BAD idea) for a wedding gig the next day. Well, you don't need to be Agatha Christie to write the next chapter... Saturday evening and our hero enters stage left to raptuous silence as always. All goes well for the first 30 mins or so, they're a fairly quiet audience but at least they're not moving towards us... Then I notice some distortion creeping in, about 10 mins later the volume dips and then everything gently fades like autumn leaves on a gentle breeze... Luckily we always DI all backline so our sound engineer was able to compensate FOH and increase my foldback. I was not best pleased when I got home, repackaged the LD750 for return and then took a closer look at the S110. Just over two hours later it started to clip... Needless to say, the whole lot went back to the retailer who refunded the S110 and replaced the LD750 with a Peavey Tour 700. Now, common sense tells me that it was "just one (or two) of those things" but it kinda seems to me that packing so much cleverness into a small metal box is just a train crash waiting to happen. Yep - I'm probably totally wrong but I'm married and used to that... I haven't replaced the S110...yet... (look upon my iron willed self control and be in awe!) but I know what I'm not going to buy...

How long is the bass in your hands each day?

Excluding practices and gigs, probably two hours a weekday as a minimum, perhaps a couple more at weekends - kinda depends on what work is coming up. We don't have a telly... -
Howdy, A hypathetical question. If your wife(a non musician) gave you an ultimatum. Stop doing your gigs or we will have to part company. what would your answer be? bear in mind you live a very comfortable life with a good lookin girl(who you love dearly) who is also very pleasant and who has enough of her own money as not to drain your resources. any (hypathetical) advice? Would love to hear it also bear in mind "you weren't a musician when I met you" was the conversation starter "but Ive just got better" was the reply
I play in two bands, do dep work, am involved in various local folk clubs (3 weeks out of 4 each month) and am doing some recording work as well. Some of that pays, some of it doesn't but gets me more dep and studio work that does. The recording work will result in an all expenses paid trip to Belgium for her next summer when I go on tour. Anything I spend on gear comes out of what I earn as a muso (or "tart" as my wife calls it!) and anything left over goes back into various things in the house. Easy answer for me... bye then

What Songs in your setlist do you hate playing?
On a topical note no one's mentioned the 'C' word yet. With Christmas coming up and gigs in the offing my function band is again having to gloomily contemplate putting at least a couple of 'Christmas' numbers in the set. So, my pet hate is playing any 'Christmas' number ever done by any artist - they are all without exception appalling.
I thought using the C word would get me banned... -
I was so glad that that one was not mentioned by anyone to play. In fact the guitarist point blank refuses to put it forward as "it's been done to death".
humph - Wish they'd done it to death before "whoever it was" bunged it on their album "whatever it's called"... ... still, at least it shows that I'm a hop and gravy muso.... -
Cool Does anyone wanna buy my knackered old Vauxhall Vectra for the cost of a brand new one? It ain't rusty or chipped..... .... it's roadworn....

<shudder> I'd go for the sandpaper and knackered elbow any day of the week... My last foray into the world of using a router nearly cost me a finger and has left me with a decorative scroll edge...

Had a few minor niggles with the ESP - the nut had a sharp edge to it that was rather painful, the control buttons were too far down the pot shafts and tended to grate against the body and the action was pretty poor. In fairness, this one had literally just come into the UK and was whisked away before any checks could be done on it. It's quite a heavy beast but is extremely well balanced. The neck is a little wider than the Ibanez and Yamaha 6 strings, but is somewhat slimmer - so it all balances out in the end All in all, a fantastic instrument that ESP could easily slap another £300 onto and still get away with it!

Thanks Burrito I've always been very careful with "roots" music - I kinda figure it's ok as long as you don't inhale...

I've been using an Ibanez SR505 for a few years now as my main "workhorse". Reliable, stays in tune, fast neck and doesn't weigh a ton like my ESP. It came with Elyxir's on it and I've carried that on so far - although I've a hankering to try the Roto Nexus - as soon as they add a 5 string set to their range...

If there are three wires coming from each PUP (one of them connected to the + side of the battery) then they're active and need to be swapped for passive ones if you strip out the active tone control circuitry. If there are just two wires coming from the PUP then they are passive and can be rewired to work without the active circuit. HTH

I used to have an HA3000 that had a problem similar to the one you are describing here. Try plugging a cable from the "Send" socket to the "Return" socket - that sorted mine out until I could do arrange to do a more permanant repair on it. Unfortunately, Hartke have had a pretty poor reputation for PCB quality over the years and my problem didn't get resolved until I resoldered vast quantities of dry joints on the underside of the pre-amp board. I think you might have your red\black and white wires the wrong way round. Take a look at this: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...c=std_jazz_bass This would make the white wires hot and the red and black ones not (as they're soldered to the pot casing). Sex on Fire I always have to resist the urge to grab a petrol can and a box of matches to put it out of my misery... -
It wasn't me, it was the others, they made me do it... I actually started out as a woodwind player in a folk band but as time went on we drifted more into electric music. So, the harsh reality was "evolve or leave". I evolved

Hi everyone. My name is Ian and I'm a recovering alcoho... damn - wrong website... After having skulked around here for over a year now I thought it was probably time to say "hi" to everyone and stop being a forum stalker. I'm 46yrs old and have been a bass player for the last 30 of those (with odd forays into playing other instruments from time to time). Mostly stuck with folk, folk-rock and what is now called "roots" music for much of that time but have played in rock, jazz, blues, C&W and covers bands along the way. I play in several bands and dep as required in others, so I'm usually out playing about three or four times a month. Instrument wise I use: Ibanez SR505 - skinniest neck I've ever found on a 5 string. Fender Fretless Jazz - timeless classic but with updated Seymour Duncan tone control circuit. ESP LTD 6 string - causing much consternation to the two guitarists in one band I play in. Aria ProII SB900 - an original that I bought new back in the 80's and still use today. Takamine 4 string Acoustic Bass - hidden at the back of the music room as my wife doesn't know about it... yet... NS WAV4 upright - feel the floor vibrate... Amplification is a Peavey Tour 700 and a choice of 1x15" and/or 2x10" Warwick cabs (or both if I'm feeling evil ) and the usual smattering of effects. Anyhow, this has been me and it's probably time for me to go back into hiding now Ian
