ooo there's 4 on there...
Only 4? There's only about 4 on there that I don't play.
anymore on the list??
Might be... Thing is, if you're playing that particular circuit, then not playing those songs will pretty soon leave you without gigs - in much the same way that any of us playing NYE are going to be playing Hi Ho Silver Lining at some point during the evening.

To 5 string or not to 5 string? That is the question.
icastle replied to kulabula's topic in General Discussion
I'm a 505 user as well. Having such skinny necks makes them an absolute doddle to play and, with the obvious exception of having an extra string to get used to, I don't notice it as feeling any 'fatter' than a standard 4 string. My own feeling is that the extra string gives you the latitude to play across the neck faster - treat the 4 extra 'low notes' as a byproduct and don't be tempted to play everything down there unless you particularly want to tap into the earthworm market. -
In multiple bands ? How do you manage your diary ?
icastle replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
For me, I run my entire 'music life' around a Google diary. Bands I play in full time have access to it and it's 'first come first served'. Depping and session work are handled slightly differently insofar as it's generally a phone call initially and I update the diary myself. For 'regulars' I give them access to my diary and they can book slots as and when they want to. There is a rule though - they book the time they think they need me for, not just block book an entire week to cover themselves and then expect to just pay me for a days work. As for the material, it depends what it is. In the FT bands I know the sets inside out so it's never an issue. If it's 'covers only' dep work then I need a set list at least 24 hours before the gig and ask for any 'deviations' from the recorded key or arrangement are noted. Depping for an originals band is a bit more work and I ask for either a rough recording at least two days beforehand or make it clear that this is going to have to be a 'best effort' arrangement. Session work for me is generally singer\songwriter stuff and I like to sit in and listen to the material and discuss options before we get to the recording stage. These guys and gals are usually working on a shoestring budget so I generally just charge them a few quid for the recording session and write off the prep work. It's all doable, but you do need to be very organised and bluntly realistic about timescales or you'll make a complete fool of yourself very quickly. -
Over here, it seems like once guys get over 50 they have to wear a fedora and a bowling shirt.
Over here they tend to play Fedora's and wear a shirt ironed over a wok...

The glaringly obvious, and somewhat disturbing, thing that (I think) we've all missed, is that the t-shirts in the photo might actually be skin tight...
Seems to me the teacher has a specified structure, and will get you where you need to be providing you last the course. A bit like in The Karate Kid, wax-on, wax-off sort of thing.
+1 At best you'll learn your scales and your notes. At worst, you'll have a lovely shiny bass.

I don't think it's the jeans doing it. I'm 50 and wear jeans. Two guitarists I play with are 60 and (almost) 70 and wear jeans. We are in the midst of the youngest 'older generation' we've ever seen. Unfortunately, some people will always look like they've just been pulled through a hedge backwards regardless of whether they're wearing jeans or a Saville Row suit.

I use one of those Dymo label printers and a piece of clear shrink sleeve over the top of it to stop the label from getting worn\peeling off.

Using a "Gramma Pad" when not needed.
icastle replied to goingdownslow's topic in Repairs and Technical
I use my Gramma on solid floors and I've not had any problems with the sound or tone.
Same here. I just use it as a 'default' because it's far easier to stand cabs and amp on it whilst setting up than it is to shift the entire rig to get the Gramma in if needed. Apart from making the obvious adjustments to take into the account the venue acoustics, it's never been a problem for me. -

icastle replied to DavidMcKay's topic in General Discussion
I guess I was looking for some comfort that I had bought a genuine article. I am reminded of a guy I knew who bought a 'genuine' Gibson guitar for £120 from China, took it into a pawn shop in Glasgow and got £700 for it - and then ran out of the shop with the money in his hand. This is a true story from 5 years ago. You may say the pawn shop should have known better but in this day and age it is getting increasingly more difficult to sort the wheat from that chaff.
That's true of high ticket value guitars but I very much doubt anyone is going to make fakes of an, albeit authorised, copy when they could be making mainstream copies.
Given that you weren't actually giving advice I have withheld your free joke. You may appeal this decision but you will lose.
I'm sure I will cope. -
Anyways - the serial number...........
Why are you fixated on the serial number? -
A lot of bassists I hear stuck permanently down the bottom of the mix are down there simply because what they're playing doesn't belong anywhere else. At the risk of being hanged drawn and quartered, if you want to move up the mix then you need to consider why you've ended up down there all the while in the first place. It could be because of the genre you're playing and there's really not a lot you can do about that unless you can reinvent it in some way. On the other hand, it's very easy to hide behind 'muffle', especially if you're not confident, comfortable and/or committed in stamping your style or personality on the material. Even once you're 'there' you have to work at it to stay there.
So how do I check the provenance via the serial number?
The only information you can get is a year and month of manufacture - August 2011 in your case. -
Yep, something like this is the stuff you should be using: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/servisol-contact-cleaner-200ml-jp17t

I've not got a definitive answer for you, but just to let you know you're not alone, I've found similar problems with a Fender JB I sometimes use when my SR505 isn't deemed 'appropriate'. My playing doesn't 'suffer' as such, but I do have to work a lot harder to do the same things.

Thanks Steve, I've fixed the Fender link and the one at Rane. Can't find any site for bassguitarpartsdirect so I'm guessing it's gone - if anyone knows different then let me know. -
I spokes to the landlord about the possibility of my band playing and he said "I've always paid £150 to bands, and I always will. It's not negotiable".
Is he as amenable to the idea of selling his beer at 1985 prices as well..?

Can't believe you charge 'so little' to post For Sale ads
icastle replied to DavidMcKay's topic in General Discussion
Oh right. It was explained to me that links to ads weren't allowed because the mods would have to check them all to make sure they're all legit, so it's just easier to outlaw them.
If it's a link, as opposed to just text, then rolling a mouse over it shows where the link is - provided it's on BC then there's no problem. If anyone is struggling to do the 'link' thing in their signature, then we're only a PM away and it saves me reaching for my trusty shovel... -

icastle replied to DavidMcKay's topic in General Discussion
If you're just providing a link to an advert correctly posted on this site within your signature, fair enough. If you are trying to pull a fast one in order to sell stuff that you haven't paid to advertise then we will take your signature file outside and prepare a shallow grave for it... in a deeply spiritual and purely loving way of course... -
Playing currently makes up a fair chunk of my somewhat sparse income. Some time ago I had a long hard think about gig types and pay and came to the following conclusions. Playing weddings and functions is the money earner and there's generally plenty of notice in advance. Already doing that. That left me sat on my arse doing nothing in the evenings where I wasn't playing. Rather than doing that I joined a pub playing rock covers band to fill those diary spaces. Not great money, but more than I'd get sat at home when not working with the function band.
