What was the issue you had. Can PM me if you dont want to advertise the issue. Is Strung Out Guitars not down near Tollcross or Tollbooth area. ? Dave

Yep he let me try one of his own basses last time i was in and it was very nice but i wasn't looking for a new bass at the time. At the moment i'm kind of sold on my Sandberg basses. They just seem to do what i want/need. Since the MarloweDK i've not had any bass GAS at all. I just love the feel and tone of that bass. It feels like it was built just for me. LOL Dave

I'll maybe get a price from Jimmy Egypt and compare against Chris at McIntyre. Chris has his prices on the website. Great Western Road is easier for me to get to altho slip road onto M8 on way home is closed so that's a bit of a bummer. I know Glasgow a lot better than Edinburgh and regularly get lost there LOL Sat Nav is a wonderful thing in the car these days LOL Dave

I googled him earlier to see where he was now. He's an option plus he has a machine for fret levelling too which i'm guessing is similar to what Sandberg use. He's been going as long as i can remember LOL Dave

Chris is my goto expert but just wondered if someone a bit closer. Edinburgh is a bit of a nightmare to drive into. I used Chris few yrs back for my Warwick Thumb NT89 when the preamp failed and he replaced it for me. Just wondering who else is close to me before i dive in. I've managed to get my Marlowe to a happy point altho i do think there are a couple of slightly high frets on it but the bass in quesion is my Fender P 50's re-issue i bought 2nd hand last year. I've been using it with a higher action than i'm used to and its ok but just think it should be better. Dave

Not quite that bad and if i raise the string height its ok but i need to take it up to around 2.5-2.75mm to sort it out. Neck is not far off being straight when looking down the edge or if i fret at 1st and last frets there isn't much movement in the string in the middle of the neck arounf 8th fret. I've tried slight adjustments on the neck. If i straighten it any further i get a bit of buzz at top end of the neck (4th - 5th fret area) I've tried so many combinations but cant seem to get to a happy medium with this one. If i use a straight edge on frets there is a high one at 16th that deadens the string. if i play lightly at 14th or 17th it has a little fret buzz. Thought i would try an expert to see what difference they can make. It a 50's re-issue P bass so spending a bit of time and money on it wont be the end of the world. I've never actually used a luthier or pro set up in over 40yrs. Dave

I have a p bass that i think needs some fret-dressing and was wondering who you guys use in Glasgow or Central belt area. Bass is choking from 14th fret upwards area. String height is just over 2mm and neck has a slight concave relief. I can do the usual truss, string height intonation set ups myself but have never tackled frets. I'm actually in Biggar / Lanark area but guessing most are based in Glasgow itself. Any suggestions welcome. Dave

EDIT as i got it after all about the LFT's. I'm a bit slow after all the Festivities ................honest 😂 Dave

Found the old question i had on BC where to get them and looks like i got them direct from Sandberg. Dave
-
The Sandberg steels are quite good strings. I was quite surprised how much i liked them but difficult to get at times so i just went back to my old faithful D'addario nickels. I found the Sandberg strings didnt feel too rough on my fingers like other steel rounds i've tried over the years. Thomann price isn't too bad but the £8 shipping means i would probably buy quite a few sets at any one time. Cant remember where i got mine. Was around 3-4yrs ago. Dave

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2021?

Amazing price for that TC combo. Used one at a rehearsal once and it sounded pretty good. Well done. Dave -
I was 10 in 1970 but didnt start buying singles till around 72/73 with Sweet, T.Rex, Mud and Bowie. Albums came later in 73 with Bowie Pin-ups and Sweet FA. In 1970 i was probably listening to what my parents liked. Anything from Elvis, Engelbert Humperdink, Tom Jones to Tijuana Sound of Brass and Music from the Greek Islands the latter giving me a lifelong love of Greece. Dave

I remembered that one too. Not sure what model he used tho. ?

2nd hand i reckon its worth anywhere from £500 - £1000 depending on condition. Dave

WOW that's a bonus if ever i saw one. Dave

I had no idea there was an original version of this. Always assumed it was Santana. Just listened to The ZOmbies version and its pretty impressive. That late 60 era produced some great songs. Amazing what you find out on BC. Cheers for that. Dave

Quite fancied trying upright too but having tried fretless basses over the years i'm a bit scared its just a passing phase again. That looks nice tho. Dave -

Took your advice and revisited the Marlowe again. Looks like i adjusted the neck a touch too far right enough. Altho the neck appeared ok when i measured below 7th/8th fret when holding 1st and last fret down there was no movement on the string so i think the neck was perfectly straight. I tweaked the neck again and it has def helped the fret buzz issue at 4th fret. The rocking across the 4th is a bit less now and i didnt need to change string height which is now 2mm at 12th. I had originally turned the truss adj about 1/8th of a turn to straighten the neck more when i bought it as i had no more height adjustment on E & G string saddles but at 12th fret it was 3mm on E string.. There was a distinct curve on the neck when i first got the bass. I turned the necck back about 1/16th of a turn back the way. I can see a very slight concave on the neck now and when fretting 1st and last frets the E string moves a little towards the 7th and 8th fret. Cheers for the advice. Sometimes it just takes someone to offer a little guidance to get things just right. Maybe the neck is a bit more sensitive to temperature changes than my other basses because the necck is slim and narrow. Dave

Me from both bands. BLOCKBUSTARZ 70's Glam Rock covers band last gig and Emergency Exit classic 70's Punk covers band recent gig. -
When i got it the bass had a forward bow and 3mm at 12th fret but saddles bottomed out when i dropped the string height and best i could get was 2.75mm. Tweaked the neck so that it has just a slight forward bow same as my other basses and that gave me saddle adjustment to get string height down to 2mm at 12th fret but i raised it to 2.25 because of the fret buzz. I'm making very small adjustments per day to try and get a balance between neck relief and string height adjustment but always comes back to fret buzz at 4th fret. Height of E string is 1mm at 3rd fret which is much the same as most of my basses so i dont think the zero fret is too low. 1mm at 3rd fret and 2.25mm at 12th fret would also indicate the neck is more concave. I like quite a flat neck with just a hint of concave. When i use a straight edge across the 4th fret onto 3rd and 5th it rocks between 3rd and 5th fret and there is another fret near the 12th that does the same. Its not a minor rocking either so i'm thinking a couple of the frets need done and i wont tackle frets myself. On a side note all my other basses are 1mm at 3rd fret and 1.5mm - 2mm. My VM4 is 1.5mm at 12th fret and has a gorgeous feel when playing. I assumed the Marlowe being more expensive would have a similar action. Its a 2016 version maybe before they plek'd the necks ??? After 5 yrs maybe something has changed on the neck ? It certainly confuses me to the point all that's left is a high fret. There's no wear on the frets and doesn't look like its been used much at all in 5yrs. Dave

When i bought my Sandberg Marlowe it was removed from the site right away. I had called to see if it was available and when Mark said yes i paid for it there and then. Dave

Decided to have another look at MarloweDK as i'm still getting a bit of fret buzz at 3-5th fret. Seems the 4th fret is high. Straight edge is rocking a bit over it when resting over 3rd to 5th fret. Also same around the 12th fret so gonna speak with Chris at McIntyre guitars after the festive period and get him to sort out. My VM4 has string height 1mm at 3rd fret on E string and 1.5mm at 12th fret and no fret buzz at all. There's not much in it and thinking its down to this 4th fret being a touch high. Bit surprised that 4th fret is slightly high considering the get "plek" treated at factory. Bass is a 2016 model but there's no fret wear that i can see. Dave
