That's pretty cool. I like that story. Thanks for sharing a happy moment. 👍 Dave

Think Alan and Chris from Overwater (not too far away from Moffat) were the 2 main luthiers there but it was Alan that organised it and such a nice guy to talk to. Wasn't a huge event but always an interesting and varied display of basses with a celeb bassist to chat and give a show. Saw Steve Williams and Steve Lawson there. Seems to be a Steve thing going on there. If you are close enough to visit you wouldn't be disappointed. Dave

Always liked what he brought to U2. A perfect fit for them IMO. My fav song New Years Day. Great bassline and the song that made me sit up and listen to them.

Gorgeous looking bass. Love the colouring on it. Alan does make some incredible basses. Thanks for sharing. Does he still run the Bass Bash at Moffat. Not heard of it in quite a few years. Dave

Nice bass what is it ?

I find same with my active basses they need a little on board boost to lift them out of the OK tone.

Quite an interesting variety so far. I'm new to my P bass and i'm trying to cover punk songs with it which surprisingly has quite a wide variety of tones from P basses and a few Rics thrown into the mix. I found it easier to dial in a better tone with my Jazz than the P but using my Markbass Nano cause the Mesa Mpulse is in for repairs at moment and the Jazz didn't quite have same depth as the P bass. The Mesa provides a better overall tone and i've yet to try the P bass properly thru it. Dave

I disagree Dave -
Had a quick search but couldn't find anything on this. Curious where we all set our on-board bass tone controls. (passive or active basses) With my passive basses (P and J types) i generally have tone control set mid-point and vary it from there depending on whether the song needs smooth deep (0%) or rasping edge (100%) Active basses i generally have set up and leave with bass slightly boosted and treble or mid at mid-point. If i do move anything its generally a small movement of treble. (Sandberg VM4, Fender P/J, Warwick Thumb) Dave

At the moment i'm using my back up amp and finding the volume changing when moving the P bass tone so i started using my Aphex Punch Factory as a limiter to level things off. Its quite an old compressor now and no longer made but it works pretty well and had great reviews when it first came out hence my reason for buying plus it has a DI out just in case an amp packs in at gig and you have no back up amp. I quite fancy the EBS Compressor. Cant go wrong with EBS. Dave -

Have to say my comment about tuner muting the bass and providing silence was a tongue in cheek comment with @RhysP . It wasn't meant to be take so seriously. Using my tuner and muting had a definite change in my sound. ....... from noise to silence ......... just a bit o'fun. 😂 On the plus side its now less than 5 weeks till Dave -

Not at all. It surprised the audience even more than me. It did produce less mistakes with the battery out. I've come to realise that when it comes to my playing Silence is Golden. Dave -

I took the battery out the pedal. That helped create more ambience around the silence. The playing kinda suffered tho. Dave -

I hadn't thought about it until now. I need to experiment at tonights gig. I want absolute silence when i tune so if there is a better way to get the perfect silence when tuning i'm all in for trying. 😂 Dave -

My tuner has a definite sound change when i put it in line to the amp. It mutes the sound when tuning Sorry just couldn't resist the obvious plus its almost time so i'm happy. Dave -

Its the tone i'm not keen on. It sounds more like someone using Moog playing bass notes. It doesn't sound like a proper bass IMO of course. I dont think i'd ever use it in a band situation. Good fun at home altho i've tried it at home and the novelty soon wore off. I managed to get the technique pretty much sorted when using them and had no trouble getting them to track properly. It was really just the tone i wasn't keen on. If it sounded like a bass guitar but playing an octave lower i might have liked that more. The Fisman pedal does that altho i think it only goes a 4th lower with either a 5th or full octave higher but it still sounds like a bass guitar. My current bands i just wouldn't have any use for it. Not quite following what you mean. Any chance you could elaborate. I am curious to find out more. Dave -

Not my kind of music and makes it hard to decide on whether the octaver works. It certainly gives a fair bit of depth but its not a bass tone i personally like. It reminds me of the old synth bass we used to get in the 80's. Dave -

Yep have to admit i'm with you on this. Had the Boss octaver pedal, Ashdown amp and my Roland 6T6B mfx unit isnt too impressive either. Personally i'd just hire in a keys player and do the job right. Oddly enough i've heard a few solo bassists use them and they sounded ok as part of their solo but never in a band situ. Once saw a guy use a Fishman pedal that was quite impressive (cant remember the model) but again he was doing solo bass to show it. Dave -

Depends on the band. Glam Rock band i use my Roland GT6B but have one clean sound, one set up as a Ric bass into an overdriven valve amp and 2x15 cab and 3rd channel set as Envelope filter for one song. Punk band is straight from bass to Mesa rig. I much prefer direct to amp. Less fuss, less gear to carry and set up. Dave -
Doug Johns - why haven't I heard of him before now?!

Hadn't thought about the weight. Are they still making them ? Also quite expensive basses too Dave -

Oddly enough i've never heard a Pedulla used in a band situation but that P/J pick up config they must be pretty decent. I did consider buying one few yrs back when i first saw Doug using his but probably just my wishful thinking that i would be able to play like him. 😂 Dave
