Has anyone bought a bass on a whim just cos of its looks?
dmccombe7 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
That was a really nice post. I remember our local music shop having the J & P versions of the Fender Antigua basses on display. I was stunned by the looks of them but never managed to buy one. Over the many many years i always return to J basses after trying other styles. Dave -

No leakage there then -
Ordered 2 sets of the Longevo nickels 40-100's and fitted a set to my MarloweDK and love the tone but i've noticed the E string sounds a little bit quiet compared to the others. Bass set up hasn't changed much altho i did have to tweak the neck a touch but the Marlowe seems to sit on the edge with the neck. Might just be this set. I have another set i'll fit to my VM4 and see how they get on. If its a generic thing i'll end up going back to my D'addario nickels again. As i've played the bass at gigs i've also noticed the strings dont cut thru the mix like my D'addarios but not much in it. Think they'll suit the Glam rock band better where i dont need as much bite for most songs. In the punk band i have a distinct edge on the top end. Dave

I'm very particular about my clothes. Any T shirt and jeans will do. Dave -

I've never been a fan of relic'd basses in fact i deliberately would give them a 2nd look but i bought a MarloweDK because i love the tone and feel of the bass. To be fair since buying the relic'ing has grown on me and i definitely dont worry so much about dinging it at gigs compared to my other "perfect condition" basses. Had i tried the bass without seeing it i would probably have bought it. That's a change in attitude for me. Dave -
I played it in a band 5 or 6 yrs ago and it was a good song to play. Dave

Looks like you were having a blast in those pics. Well done. What is the band ? Dave

I dont even know what the song is and i'm generally hard to classic rock. 😂 Dave

Because he plays chords a lot i struggle with Lemmy songs being a fingerstyle player. I have managed Ace of Spades by using my index finger like a pic. Good fun to play tho. Dave

See where you're coming from now but i dont think i've ever bought a bass on a whim like that. I've always known beforehand what i was looking for. Sometimes it worked, other times not so much. I prefer to do a little research these days. Was different back in 70's and 80's where you had to read magazine reviews. These days its so much easier to get reviews on youtube or online. Dave -

white Ric 4003 back in 80's. Moved it on fairly quick tho as just couldn't get the tone i was looking for. Would like to have another one tho. Dave -
Cabs have nothing to clamp onto. Grills are flush mounted on front of the cabs. I did find something i can modify from String Swing clips that are designed to clamp to the top handle of an amp but as its a cab i;ll replace the straps and fit a bracket each side edge with a connecting strap between them and will fit another longer strap down the side, under the cab and connect to hanger at the other side. They are a US company so its whether i can get them in UK. £14 each hanger Dave

That's a possibility but my OCD wont let me get away with that 😂 Dave

I'm waiting on a new Mesa TT800 lightweight amp and wont be racking it.. I'm trying to reduce weight. I've just realised my cab handles arent fixed into the cab sides. They pull out for lifting so the strap thing wouldn't really work as it would mean the handles would be sticking out causing the bass to hit against the handles. Mmmmm this is getting complicated. Dave

I think i might need to rig something up myself as having no luck finding what i want. I wont have an amp rack to attach it to so i might look at side of cab mounting but using smaller 25mm wide straps onto an L shaped bracket with it secured to cab handles at each side. I could make 2off as i always take 2 basses to gigs. My cabs have side handles like yours. I would glue rubber strip on the inside to rest against the cab with causing damage. Dave

I'm looking for one that takes the weight of the bass as i dont like leaving my basses resting on the strap locks. I did consider them tho as a last resort. Dave

My cabs have flush mounted grills so not an option in this case. The D'addario one shown earlier in this thread looked promising but same problem with no edges to cabs. Dave
