  1. I use the passive input on my Mesa Mpulse and that brings the sound to life witha little overdriven tone whereas the active circuit drops the gain and gives a far more smoother bass tone no matter whether passive or active bass it still has the same effect. I tend to keep my active bass volume down a bit to match any passive bass i might use on the night. Dave
  2. I'm not really a U2 or AC fan but i just think what U2 does seems to work for them as a successful band. Altho this thread has been quite amicable I have seen other threads on BC or maybe it was TB where there was genuine dislike for what he does in U2. Not specifically Adam himself but more his playing and sadly people tend to link the playing to the person. Over the years i have to admit that i really enjoyed the bands i've been in where i was playing the simple rock basslines cause i could focus more on just enjoying myself than trying to think about each and every note that comes next. Sometimes its just nice to play some straight 8ths. Dave
  3. Yep i quite like Nickelback too. Dont see the issue if a band does what it does well. Dave
  4. It might be this Mariah ‘doesn’t do stairs’ This rumour was kicked off by Alan Carr who, following Carey’s appearance on Channel 4’s The Friday Night Project in 2008, claimed that she demanded a “staircase assistant”, explaining, helpfully, that their one job was “to check the stairs for her to see whether she could walk down them”. Further fuel for the fire came in the form of a famous paparazzi photo of Mariah stacking it down the steps of her former fiance James Packer’s yacht in six-inch heels. Perhaps then, her caution is understandable: less a diva move, more a health and safety precaution. Verdict: TRUE
  5. If it works .......leave it well alone. Dave
  6. Its just the Basschat conversion factor. We go off topic to retain interest and eventually come back to the original theme. Its what we bassists do. Dave 😂
  7. Love my Geddy too. It just works so well and the neck is a dream on it. By far one of the best necks i've ever played. Dave
  8. Looks very much like a Geddy Jazz there and a full electronic drum kit. Dave
  9. Tuning is where everyone turns the fiddly bits at the top of the neck to create an illusion of superior competence when in fact all they are doing is changing the channel on the telly.
  10. That's pretty cool. I like that story. Thanks for sharing a happy moment. 👍 Dave
  11. Think Alan and Chris from Overwater (not too far away from Moffat) were the 2 main luthiers there but it was Alan that organised it and such a nice guy to talk to. Wasn't a huge event but always an interesting and varied display of basses with a celeb bassist to chat and give a show. Saw Steve Williams and Steve Lawson there. Seems to be a Steve thing going on there. If you are close enough to visit you wouldn't be disappointed. Dave
  12. Always liked what he brought to U2. A perfect fit for them IMO. My fav song New Years Day. Great bassline and the song that made me sit up and listen to them.
  13. Gorgeous looking bass. Love the colouring on it. Alan does make some incredible basses. Thanks for sharing. Does he still run the Bass Bash at Moffat. Not heard of it in quite a few years. Dave
  14. Nice bass what is it ?
  15. I find same with my active basses they need a little on board boost to lift them out of the OK tone.
  16. Quite an interesting variety so far. I'm new to my P bass and i'm trying to cover punk songs with it which surprisingly has quite a wide variety of tones from P basses and a few Rics thrown into the mix. I found it easier to dial in a better tone with my Jazz than the P but using my Markbass Nano cause the Mesa Mpulse is in for repairs at moment and the Jazz didn't quite have same depth as the P bass. The Mesa provides a better overall tone and i've yet to try the P bass properly thru it. Dave
  17. Had a quick search but couldn't find anything on this. Curious where we all set our on-board bass tone controls. (passive or active basses) With my passive basses (P and J types) i generally have tone control set mid-point and vary it from there depending on whether the song needs smooth deep (0%) or rasping edge (100%) Active basses i generally have set up and leave with bass slightly boosted and treble or mid at mid-point. If i do move anything its generally a small movement of treble. (Sandberg VM4, Fender P/J, Warwick Thumb) Dave
  18. At the moment i'm using my back up amp and finding the volume changing when moving the P bass tone so i started using my Aphex Punch Factory as a limiter to level things off. Its quite an old compressor now and no longer made but it works pretty well and had great reviews when it first came out hence my reason for buying plus it has a DI out just in case an amp packs in at gig and you have no back up amp. I quite fancy the EBS Compressor. Cant go wrong with EBS. Dave
  19. Have to say my comment about tuner muting the bass and providing silence was a tongue in cheek comment with @RhysP . It wasn't meant to be take so seriously. Using my tuner and muting had a definite change in my sound. ....... from noise to silence ......... just a bit o'fun. 😂 On the plus side its now less than 5 weeks till Dave
  20. I was gonna reply panto style but it seemed too obvious. 😂 Dave
  21. Only 5 weeks away. That's close enough for me to get excited. 🎅 Dave
