I did see a review on youtube that was more about differences between cheap (electro-harmonix), medium priced (Boss) and expensive (Cali76). The reviewer listed other compressors in similar price bracket that he also rated quite highly and the Aguilar was rated along with the Cali76 so i'm guessing it was pretty good. He didn't demonstrate each compressor as it was more about the difference between the price ranges. Dave

I have the Punch Factory Opto-Compressor which does a good job. Simple to use with only 2 knobs for Drive and Level. It has a row of led's to show how much you are compressing. I've considered changing to something else like the EBS Comp and have read great things on TB about the Keeley comps but i'm looking for something simple to use and set up quickly. I play quite aggressively depending on style of music i'm playing and what i've found with non tube amps is that when i change tone on a P bass from 100% to 50% my volume drops a touch. Its enough to be noticeable in a guitar, bass and drums band so i set the compressor up to limit the high volume when really digging in with the tone full up on the bass. When i dial the tone back the comp does less work but still there. I guess its more a volume limiter than anything else. Dave

Doug Johns - why haven't I heard of him before now?!

Here he is from 2017 with his band at the Firefish Festival. Kinda nice and light. -

Not seen much of him recently but i was following him a few years back and was higely impressed by him. I put him up there with Allain Caron. Great at fingerstyle and his melodic slap is quite enviable. Dave -
Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2021?
dmccombe7 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Its a bit overkill for my needs but i've had since new back in the old days. I only use it for 3 sounds. 1. clean with slight compression with the ability to access delay, reverb, chorus and distortion at touch of a button 2, Ric thru an overdriven Ampeg into 2x15's with the same access as above. This setting gives me a tone of really pushing the 15's to their flapping limit. 3. envelope filter for use in Virginia Plain in the 70's Glam band. The rest is all for a bit of fun at home. Dave -

What is it ? I'm still using my old trusty Roland GT6B mfx unit. Dave -
I know there's another larger venue in Inverness called The Ironworks but have never been. Hate seeing good venues disappear. Dave

Oooohhhh that was sneaky, but you gotta laugh 😂

Our drummer sent that clip to me last night. Why she couldn't just take a short break and go to the loo. Disgusting. Some poor cleaning staff are gonna have to clean that up. Not acceptable in my book. And what about the idiot that got up on stage. How sick is he. Dave

He's a giant. 😂 Looks like a crackig set up there. Dave

You know that makes a lot of sense as anytime i've been at a wedding in Highlands everyone wants that traditional Scottish themed music to finish on. Was at mates wedding reception in the large hotel in Oban at the front overlooking the harbour. Was a great night. And have to say a very tasty breakfast in the morning. Out of curiosity why not learn some Ceilidh music just for that type of function and then you'll get paid twice. 😂 Dave

Bass players dont fight, they discuss amicably. Is this too early Dave -

This will pass once you've received the full GAS vaccination therapy. An injection of bassiness is required. 😂 Dave -

That's exactly what i thought it was all about. I trust buying from fellow BCers and as you say you can buy 2nd hand and if its not for you just simply sell it on with little or no losses. Everyone benefits in some way. Dave -

I tend to buy for whatever project i might be doing and once that's done i move the gear on if no longer being used and like you i've often wondered how people get thru so much gear altho i do know some guys buy gear and sell on for a small profit but there are some guys on BC that dont appear to be doing it for profit. Is it just to try things out and when not suited they just sell on again. Dave -
Last night was a private party freebie for friends that own a very large country house. Punk band and was a pretty good night. I was driving but rest of the band were staying over so you can guess how that went I live 25mins from it so decided to just drive home. 2 shorter 45min sets but punk music is fast when playing it live. Playing fingerstyle i was getting sore fingers by the end of it. Used my recently acquired Precision bass for the full night. Strangely enough i had no left hand aches at all just my plucking hand getting a bit tired. Just wondering if the wider P neck helped the left hand positioning. Dave

That's pretty poor they stopped the gig. Dave

Was at the Sunderland gig on Glass Spider Tour with Peter Frampton on guitar and Big Country doing the support slot. Big Country were the highlight for me but thought Bowie did ok as far as i can remember. Dave

That's the bass player i was thinking off and not Tony Visconti. Definitely an amazing player. Dave

This is the clip i saw Gail playing a wee solo of bass and vocals. Have to admit she has a fantastic voice.

Its a good song and well played but when i analyse why i went off Bowie i tend to narrow it down to the fact there are too many musicians / instruments playing at same time. Its obviously personal taste and i know a lot of people that prefer Bowie's later albums from mid 80's. I liked the simplicity of singer, guitar, bass and drums and maybe a bit of keys now and again. I got into Bowie in Ziggy days so it definitely influences my choice of albums. Last one i bought (before Blackstar) was Station to Station and altho i really liked it when i bought it i've very rarely played it since. One song i really love from Bowie and my apologies for digressing from the OP original question on Bowie Bassists is Where Are We Now but i think the Vid helps make that song a hit for me. Dave

I've always been a Trevor Bolder fan so i'm a bit biased towards that era of Bowie. Always thought Man Who Sold as having a completely different vibe (that i really liked) from his other albums of that era. I've heard Gail and Tony Visconti on seperate non Bowie vids and was very impressed by them. Afraid i drifted away from Bowie as he moved in 80's and didnt return to his albums until Blackstar. I liked occasional singles from albums but just couldn't get ito the albums. Dave

And Honey of course.

@ubit gotta ask why there were 2 bands at same wedding. Not heard of that before. Dave

That's what i find. If some band members go out front they only hear the parts they want to hear and dont have an overall grasp of band sound. Bass or drums are usually the areas that fall short. Guitarists generally only listen to melody of a song when sound-checking. Dave
