New Mesa Subway head - Further update with added snake oil
dmccombe7 replied to Steve Browning's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks Steve i'll maybe look into that. I like good quality cables but i spend more on the cab cables. I buy good quality instrument cables but never gave it a lot of thought other than they were from a reputable source or manufacturer. I have noticed a huge difference when using my wireless against a good quality cable. Cable gives more depth of tone but i need the freedom of wireless as 70's Glam Rock and platform boots i try to avoid having cables to trip over. 😂 Dave -

How did the Mpulse fair against the TT800 Steve ? Sounds like the various cables made quite a difference. I've always tried to use quality cables. I have some from OBBM and some i bought thru Bass Direct when i bought my Berg cabs many moons ago. Mine are a combination of Proel, Klotz or Van Damme cables with Neutrik connectors. Dave -
100% agree.

Downloaded Jeff Berlin's book and started doing the exercises but i think proper lessons with a teacher definitely help push and motivate you more. Think if i had continued with more proper lessons i may have taken bass playing more seriously rather than a hobby in life. Who knows but it would definitely have been a benefit no matter what. The lessons i had never got into chord structures etc. It was basically given a music sheet to learn for the following week and run thru it with the teacher. Eventually he admitted he couldn't offer any more. As i said hindsight has left me thinking he was more of an amatuer guitarist than anything else. Dave

When i started bass i took lessons for about 12-18mths. Was a long time ago in 70's. I still use that basic theory to this day. I'm not a sight reader but can work my way thru most things with a little time. I still write out my bass parts in correct tablature but its more to have a back up memory written down. I usually write it out as scribbled notes when learning a new song and once i'm happy with it i formally write it out and that acts as a reminder to learning direct from listening to the song. Been doing that for over 40 yrs now and works for me. Most of the bands i've been in realise that i will have the exact song structure written out and tend to ask me what's next or what's correct. You don't need to aim at being an expert at sight reading or theory to get some benefit from lessons but i sometimes wish i had kept the lessons going and learned more about the theory. The guy that taught me was a guitarist but on hindsight i dont think he fully understood the theory for bass playing. Dave

Used to play this in a Friends of Deep Purple tribute act. Can see how my own notes fair against your Rob. Def a classic rock album. Dave

Thanks @Hellzero very much appreciate the heads up and the sentiment there. I was looking for one but having just bought a Mesa Subway ri gat over £3k i can't really justify a new bass as well. Lovely looking bass too but GLWTS. They are becoming quite rare and hard to find. Think your pricing is fair and i would have definitely taken it at that price. Dave

That's a bit of a disappointment in an expensive bass. Dave -

Have to say my Warwick Thumb NT is one of the best basses i've ever had so much that i've kept it since new in 89. Warwick were populat in late 80's as the new "IN" basses. Did try a streamer and i quite liked that too but that's what makes this such an interesting thread. It highlights how we differ in our taste of basses. Dave -

Do you mind me asking what it was you didn't like about the Ric bass @Muzz. I had one in 80's and just found the tone very limited. I do have a hanckering for another one but would obviously try before buying. Dave -

Our guitarist had 2 of them when he played bass in another band and he was telling me about them too.. Nice looking basses too. Dave -
You can but it doesn't quite have the same bite as a fretted. I am a Jack Bruce fan. There are some bass players that have done a great job using fretless in rock but for me its easier using a fretted to play rock. Dave

I saw the ACG's at Alan's bass bash in Moffat when i was there a few times but his basses were always busy and just never got to trying one. I only came across him when i bought my Overwater 6er and someone mentioned ACG to me. Having never heard of ACG at that time i went with Overwater. I wasn't aware WAL made different necks but i'm no expert in WAL basses. Mine was the WAL Custom series. -
I go thru periods like that too. In 80's i had a fretless P then a WAL altho the WAL had a slector switch that gave you a click type sound similar to playing a fretted bass. I think it boosted a specific high frequency. I liked that. My Overwater has same. Also had a Jaydee fretless and Yamaha fretless but like you i get bored and lack inspiration mainly because its not the style of music i play in bands where a 4 string fretted just works better ........ for me anyways. Some interesting ones there @Bigwan I bought my Warwick Thumb NT in 89 from Sound Control Glasgow. Tried the Thumb and the Streamer but preferred the Thumb probably because i was a Jack Bruce fan. The ACG's look amazing. Not actually tried one. I like the look and sound of MM but tried one when they appeared in shops years ago and the neck felt too wide for me. Your WAL experience did surprise me as i found mine very comfortable to play but had a dead note on G string which on hindsight might have been something simple but being young and naive and having no help from WAL i traded it for something else possibly my Jazz. Its amazing how we experience basses in different ways. Dave -
