He's just a really likeable guy with a great personality and he's not a bad bassist.

Think she was a fan of a band called Portishead ? I don't really know them that well but i was curious so had a quick listen to them and i could hear the similarities in styles. I def enjoyed it. Not bad for a walk in and play and home again after a couple of hrs work. Dave -
Back in early 80's i played a fretless P bass in a rock covers band doing Kansas, Magnum, Gary Moore, Saga, ELP and it was great. I ended up getting a WAL custom fretless after that but wasn't happy with the WAL and traded it for a white Rik bass. That lasted even less and bought a Fender J with maple neck. The WAL appeared to have a dead spot around the Eb on G string but on hindsight it may well have been something silly but WAL didn't want to know. And after spending £740 on it in early 80's i wasn't a happy chappie with them. RANT over i think if you put the effort in you can indeed play in most styles but it does take work to get there. I kinda lost the notion for fetless after the WAL incident and stuck with fretted until 2010 when i bought my Overwater 6er custom Fretless more for a challenge and to push me a bit plus i wanted something special for my 50th. Wife's idea to get the bass so can't complain. Some pics of my WAL, Shergold twin 4&8 (their first 8 string bass built using their 6 string bass) and my Fender P bass. (back in the days when i was a skinny 9.5st) Dave

Afraid not but i'll donate 50p if that gets you started. Another 9999 fiends and you've got one bass plus postage of course.

Think that's the rub for most that they aren't prepared to put the additional effort in. I go thru stages of having fetless basses cause i love the sound you get from them but they don't really suit the bands i play in so i never seem to have the time to be fully committed to them. Its usually in between bands i get into fretless mode. I'm now back to my one Overwater 6er custom fretless mainly because i wasn't playing the others i've had over the years. Dave

Having a listen to an EP i was asked to do basslines for 2yrs ago. It was never finished but sound engineer sent me the studio tracks he had. Apparently the singer / writer fell out with the studio and never finished them. Singer later asked if i was ok with her keeping the basslines which was fine by me but looks like she didn't complete them. This was one of those jobs where you turn up, have a listen to the basic songs and play a bassline from scratch kinda thing. Quick discussion about what they were looking for in the songs and i played thru what i thought would work and agreed to go for it. Please note that the final mix was never completed. I believe she wanted some extra harmonies, guitar and keys to be added. Quite enjoyed the experience as its not my usual style of music. Dave 1 - Donald Put Down That Gun.mp3 -
I'm in. I have it on a word search now. I'll get a notification as soon as it appears or maybe even before its written. Dave

No chance. I'm not that nice a person.

I'm a nice guy just trying to help a fellow BC'er escape from his dilemma. No-one wants to see him suffer like this any more than he needs to. Sure you would do the same. Dave

Watched it earlier this morning. Had me rolling about laughing with his spaniel comment. Dave

OR............let me keep it for you in a nice safe environment free of charge and i'll even pick it up directly from your house. I won't charge for fuel. Dave

A Rickenfaker maybe but not an expensive Rik bass. Dave

What bass are you using at 14mm ? Dave
-
My first outing from 4 strings i went the full hog, missed out 5ers and bought a cheap ESP Ltd 6 stringer with 16.5mm spacing measured at bridge. No idea what the nut spacing was but i think it was narrower than my Jazz or Thumb bass which both have narrow nuts compared to P basses in general. All my other basses were circa 18mm at that time. I know that doesn't sound much but i found i was missing the strings with my plucking hand. I did eventually get used to it but when i had my Overwater 6 string built i requested 18mm spacing and it made a difference in my playing. My left hand managed to adapt far quicker at changes in string spacing. My 5 stringers since that first 6er have generally been around the 18-19mm. I found a larger spacing was easier to get used to but then you have the issue with the neck being slightly wider. I'd measure what you have and go for a compromise. If you have 18-19mm at bridge and don't want a wide neck then maybe stick with something 18mm or less. If, like me, neck width doesn't bother you as much then stick to what you are currently used to. No matter what you buy you stick at it and you'll get used to it. One other point i should mention that when i had the ESP with 16.5mm spacing i had no issues changing back to my 4 string basses. It was always when i went back to the smaller spacing for some reason. Hope this helps Dave

I really like the sound of the Kramer 4000 & 4001 series basses.

Here's his early collection
-
Yep that's it. Nice one. Thanks for that. Wonder what the pick-ups are ? Dave
-
Watched it again and managed to freeze it on the bass and it does have a scratchplate like a P bass but doesn't look like a normal P pick up. Dave
-
He used to borrow an Alembic bass especially in early Whitesnake from what i've read but not sure if that was for studio work. Dave
-
Different bass. The original was like twin humbuckers towards the bridge end and no scratchplate. I heard a rumour it was an Alembic of some sort but i can't say i've ever seen one like that. Dave

Can anyone tell me what bass Neil is using on this. Been curious since buying the album when it came out but can't seem to find anything on the bass.

Amazing John Wetton. Brilliant bassist. @Bass Culture
