Posh cafe. I like everything in its place and most people like what i have. Always enough to please everyone without being too showy. Dave

Much the same debate with Rosewood V maple necks and how they affect tone. I definitely hear subtle differences to my ear altho an audience probably doesn't unless solo'ing basses. Then again i'm interested in what i hear as it makes me think i'm playing better Dave
-
Wise choice and i'm now looking forward to seeing some pics when it arrives. Dave

I've not played a wenge Dingwall but i've owned the maple 5 stringer and it was a great neck. The low B was first class and sound engineer fiends i know in studios where i've used it loved the tone. I have a wenge Warwick Thumb NT from 89 and the feel of that neck is 2nd to none. I'm not talking about playability as such, it just feels nice on the hand. If it was me and i had my mind set on wenge now then i think i would hold out for the later delivery. I have a feeling you might regret it if you make a decision based on delivery time. SIMPLIFY THE DECISION :- If both necks were available at same time what one would you pick. That's your answer IMHO. Looking forward to seeing the finished product whatever you decide. They do make some gorgeous basses. Dave

Pretty good sir. Well done getting that gig and wish you all the very best when things pick up for gigs again. Dave

Yep think that's why my we hand was aching trying to learn it. Was using this but not sure its 100% accurate but its a good guideline. Obviously his live version has variations. Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick Bass by Ian Dury and the Blockheadstabs @ Ultimate Guitar Archive.pdf -

I took a first stab at Hit Me With your Rhythm Stick last night. Its been on my bucket list for many a year now. Might as well make the most of this lock down. Just the verse riff to sort out. Can play it slowly but struggling with the speed and trying to remember it all. Needs more work. After 15 mins my left hand is killing me tho. After i can sort that out i'll just polish it off and try to make it sound like Norman. That's the hard part. It takes a lot of speed and stamina to play that full song. I need to work on my fretting hand stamina. Ouch !!! Dave

I bought the Kansas 30th anniversary Sailing collection a few yrs back. Fantastic band with some very emotional songs. Was listening to Gentle Giant few days ago and thought they had a similar sound. .At first i didn't know who it was on a compilation Prog album. Dave -
I get the digging in thing as i tend to do that a lot in my own playing but obviously i'm not doing solo's to the same level as these guys. Doug Johns i had forgotten all about and its great to hear him again. He really impressed me when i first came across him. His pick-ups are very close to the strings which i'm not a fan of to be honest. I hate to hear my strings touch the pick ups especially with metal core types as it gives off a really loud pop. Its not as bad with my enclosed covers tho. Like the idea of adding that bit more "clank" to my tone as it sounds a lot more defined within the song. I'm gonna try that a bit more at next rehearsals. Recently i've been using flats and lightened my touch a fair bit to reduce blisters and general aches in my fingers / hands. Maybe i've just gone a bit too far altho i def like my flats tone with my VM4 bass. Off to listen to Doug Johns some more. He's so good. Dave

Had another listen and it reminds me of Mark Kings tone when he solos finger style without the slappy thingy. When he goes back into the song its such a sweet tone.

Not knocking his playing at all. Its just the bass tone gets weak and lot of fret rattles. When he hits the lower notes it seems fine. I'm using Beyer D headphones too so its not because of the laptop. I've noted that with others playing them too. Stanley Clarke tone i find the same. Again an excellent player but his tone weakens. I guess its just a personal taste thing. I would still love an Alembic. Any version to be honest as i love how they sound in a band. No other bass sounds quite like them. Dave

Thought i'd play some Mahogany Rush for us fans. Fantastic bass tone on this too. -
Love Alembic tone when its played in a song but i find them very treble and rattly when solo'd like that. It sounded fantastic within the song with a nice full but clear mid punch and then the solo it went thin and treble sounding. Would still love one. Dave

Quite liked Barclay James Harvest bass tone on Live Tapes Mockingbird
-
On my todo list as well

One i had forgot was this. (Cetera's triggered this memory for me from 76 ) Loved his tone from the Destroyer album
-
That just has that Reggae feel. Bass is so smooth. Altho i'm not usually a Reggae fan i like the way these songs feel and the bass flows really nice That's how to do it properly

He used a white P bass when i saw them play in this VID clip

I bought Mahogany Rush What's Next album. Was totally stunned by how great it was. Frank Marino was a under-rated in my opinion. A bit of a baw-heid but was his idol Hendrix not the same. ? -
