Must admit i haven't bought or listened to many of the more recent Prog bands. When you say new prog bands how far are you going back. ? Altho i appreciate how great CS was i was never one for emulating his sound mainly because i don't use a pick and for some odd reason the prog bands i like don't generally have that bass sound either with maybe the odd exception. I'm talking :- Arjen Luccassen - Lost In the New Real album, IQ - Road of Bones, various Anathema albums, various Mystery albums Steve Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase Sound of Contact - Dimensionaut (probably in my top 3 best Prog albums ever) I tend to buy select albums from an artist these days unlike when i was younger and would buy every album no matter if it was good or bad. From memory the albums listed have no CS Ric sounding bass on them. Dave

The VID clip i posted earlier in this thread of Trevor explaining how he played it has since been blocked for copyright but your explanation above would explain why we all have different versions in our heads. One other small note is that Rebel Rebel was Herbie Flowers on bass and i watched him play it with a local band he knows and he also changed the riff regularly throughout the song but still retaining the rhythm. Yep. Its not as shown above with the open G and Ab on 7. Its simply open G and A. There's a vid clip of Trevor Bolder explaining how he played the song and the G & A were played on the G string. In the first bar the last 3 notes i play are B, Bb, A (9, 8, 7) but not sure if i'm doing it right.

Our drummer owns the PA and has a QSC system with two of each K12's, K153's and K181's. 1. For smaller less than 100 gigs he uses the 12's on their own. (vocals only) 2. For slightly bigger gigs typically 100-200 he'll add the subs. (vocals and bass and snare drum usually. Depending on size of the venue will decide whether or not we put backline thru PA) 3. For larger gigs again he'll use the 15's with subs and if needed he can add in the 12's again. (everything thru PA) From a personal preference i like having the subs in all gigs as it gives the bass drum more impact and seems to provide a more filling sound for the drums. We'll set up the gear for slightly larger gigs and depending on how the sound-check comes across with just backline on its own we will make a decision as to whether or not we just put bass and guitar thru PA. I would prefer everything thru the PA except the smaller gigs. I feel it gives a better overall sound but majority of the audience wouldn't notice to be honest. Dave

Yep once a song is dropped its gone from my head. I've been asked to dep for bands i'd previously been in and couldn't remember anything from their set list. If i spent a day or two refreshing them they would come back again. A good example for me at moment is we discussed doing a song last year and i learned the song note for note and wrote it down note for note as i do with every song. Singer struggled a bit with it so we decided to drop it. Last week he said he had been working on it and thinks he could do it now. I couldn't even remember the root notes let alone the proper bass lines of what is a relatively simple song. I have my detailed notes so today i'll refresh myself. I think its a way of making space in my tiny brain that once its dropped i just delete it and allow space for something else in my limited brain capacity Dave

100% agree. Best a DVD as you get to see Geddy doing any combination of 3 things at one time, ie. vocals with bass and bass pedals, vocals with keys and bass pedals and on occasion vocals with bass and keys with bass pedals. Man is a genious and Neil Peart solos were just something to behold. Dave

I knew Neil had taken inspiration from Ayn Rand in those early days but to be honest it didn't make any difference to me. I just enjoyed the songs and lyrics for what i imagined them to be. Where he gets his influences from isn't the point for me. Enjoy music for what it is and not what it might be. Dave

Mr Peart was one of the few famous people that would be interesting enough to sit and have a chat with. Obviously he liked his privacy but he had some interesting and worthwhile views on life. Rush have never been full of themselves like many other bands when they became famous. They've always appreciated their fans and what they've done for Rush. Still can't get over this. So so sad. Like the lyrics from my fav Rush song Bravado :- "And if the music stops There's only the sound of the rain" Dave

I use Briwax on my bare wood finishes. It was recommended by Chris from McIntyre guitars. Doesn't leave that sticky feel that beeswax does and polishes out really well leaving a nice matt finish rather than a shine. Wife bought The Original Non-silicone "Wood Silk" beeswax spray polish from Morrisons. Still not sure what's best for painted basses tho Better go back over this thread again. Was using car polish but recent posts said not to. Dave
