  1. Used them at 2 6hr rehearsals now first gig on 7th Dec. Have to say i'm finding movement on the neck a lot faster and easier on my fingers. Tone within a band setting seems to be holding its own. I do miss that roundwound edge tho but turning the treble up on the VM4 gives an unusual click if that's the right word. Not so much a rattle on the frets as a definite click but it gives some songs that little bit more when required. For most of our set the EQ on the bass is flat on treble with some bass boost both pick ups on evenly with the amp EQ at very slight plus on bass and treble. With rounds the treble was centre and mid was slightly plus. Doesn't seem to be a lot in it within band setting. I still need to tweak the EQ to get a little more clarity on the D & G strings but that's maybe down to the studio gear (EBS hd360 thru Ampeg 810) EBS amps are normally quite clear sounding amps tho whereas my Mesa can be more muddy tube sounding. I have the Reidmar 750 head at home so i have some comparison between the two amps. At the moment i'm enjoying them and i'll see how they sound first gig on 7th. Only a vocal PA as its a smallish gig 100-150 people. Dave
  2. Was in a Deep Purple tribute band few yrs ago and it was a challenge covering Glenn Hughes bass sound with my fingers rather than a pick. I had to grow my fingernails to get that click from the Made In Europe era which was my favoured DP era. Not tried a pick on those songs since late 70's Dave
  3. Not that i'm anywhere near as good as Geddy but i liked his earlier tone. Wish i had his ability tho
  4. Oddly enough most of my bass heroes back when i started were probably pick players too Glenn Hughes, Roger Glover, Chris Squire, Phil Lynott, Gene Simmons, Dave Hope, Mike Rutherford, Roger Waters i started with pick but moved to finger style as i got more into prog and jazz rock and then there was Geddy who had best of both worlds using finger style but sounding like a pick at times. Dave
  5. Go on you know ya wanna. Publish it. I remember playing in Dunstable in mid 80's Would it be the Wheatsheaf or something like that. I remember it being a great wee gig. We were well looked after by Landlord / owner and the punters both before and after the gig. Dave
  6. Current band was word of mouth. Singer was doing solo work with backing tracks but wanted to go down the road of full Glam rock covers band. He posted an advert on his FB page and a mate who knows both of us passed it onto me. I replied saying i would be interested. I said i knew a drummer from about 5 /6 yrs ago that was into Glam Rock. When i said his name he told me he already knew him for years and he had recommended me too. Small world i guess. Our guitarist was the bass player in the singers "other" Ozzy tribute band and our current keys player i was in an originals Prog band a few yrs ago. Was all basically word of mouth and people that knew people. First few bands were all mates but in last 5-10 yrs its been mostly word of mouth with one or two thru JMB or similar sites. Dave
  7. When younger watching bands was every weekend and therefore i was very aware the music was live. For those that don't go to see live bands are they under the illusion that everything is just mimed like the many TV programs they watch ie TOTP. There are artists / bands playing "live" that also mime and if you follow pop music i guess its what you'd come to expect from any band. Its a wonderful world we live in. Shame about all the naive idiots we have to put up with. Dave
  8. WOW that's a first. That really does take the P. Dave
  9. I'm very rarely in Edinburgh because of traffic and parking a nightmare. I've always headed into Glasgow so i know more of the venues in that area. If you asked that question as a topic you might get a better idea of what's available in Scotland. Dave
  10. I now have visions of Father Ted Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on. Dave
  11. The list below are the usual larger venues for the more well known tribute bands but not sure about the PA being provided in them. That's something you would need to check but there are plenty of 1st class PA hire companies around Glasgow area. Classic Grand in Glasgow (old cinema building with different sized venues on each level) Oran Mor in Glasgow (converted church but good reputation for bands) Hard Rock Cafe in Glasgow but load in is a pain as its a pedestrian area so no vehicles and you need to carry or transport gear a fair bit to the venue. O2 Academy in Glasgow Lanark Town Hall in Lanark Rutherglen Town Hall in Glasgow area Hamilton Town Hall in Hamilton The 3 Town Hall venues above are all run by the same South Lanarkshire Council and all similar sized well run venues. Motherwell Civic Centre has 2 venues. Concert Hall which can be standing or seated and the Theatre venue which is fully seated (my preference but smaller) Ultimate Bowie tend to play the theatre gig every year and fill it easily whereas MacFloyd tend to play the concert hall and most times will fill that. I've seen other bands do the concert hall but half full. Still a good gig tho. There are probably more but these are the ones i specifically know or i've attended. Shock City Promotions might be worth contacting as they seem to be one of the better promoters for tribute bands in Glasgow area. I believe Chris Glen is involved with them in some way. No idea what they take as a percentage or fee. http://www.shockcity.co.uk/contact.html Hope that helps.
  12. A wee long weekend tour Fri - Mon. Its only a couple hundred miles and a wee bit more from South of England. An easy trek for a competent, well organised band like yourselves. Think of the money to be made, the prestige of playing 1st class venues played by many other famous tribute bands and the creme de la creme i would be there to say hello/ What's not to like Dave
  13. It may appear easy doing the John Deacon and Roger Taylor parts but that combination with Freddie and Brian May is what made Queen who they were. They didn't need to be flashy or technically brilliant. They just needed to do what the songs really needed and they did it so well. Are you gonna keep the bass then as i expect to be seeing this line up again in future. Would be a shame not to. Queen and Bowie on same night would be cool especially up here in Scotland What is the SY-1 you were using ? a synth pedal maybe ??? its those little touches that take a tribute to the next level for me. Dave
  14. Me too. From Markbass 1x12 combo and ext cab to my Mesa Mpulse 600 and Mesa PH212 cab. Both heavy but still manageable at the moment. If finances agree i still quite fancy the Mesa Subway lightweight gear WD800 with 210 & 115 cabs but at over £3k its gonna be a stretch. Dave
  15. Had the Dark Glass pre-amp on a Dingwall NG2 and it sounded great. Sandberg basses are IMO better made than the Dingwall. That should make for a great match. Dave
  16. Superb. Were you using an effect on Radio Ga Ga ? Bass sounded excellent. Great overall tone with the new bass. I'd go see that show. Singer did a fantastic job on Freddie's vocals. Not an easy task. Guitarist spot on too. Drums and keys also an excellent job. All good i'd have to say. Cheers for sharing Dave
  17. Get in there with the big spoon and stir things a little bit. Its what we're all here for. On the other hand (excuse the pun) you'll be a prime target no matter what you say Dave
  18. I started with a pick mainly because it came with my first bass out of our mail order catalogue and being a fan of Thin Lizzy and Kiss that's how they did it.. After a few yrs i changed to fingerstyle and then a few yrs later i occasionally used my index finger as a pick altho nowhere as proficiently as a genuine pick player. I tend to use it for certain songs or if my fingertips are getting a bit sore on longer gigs. With regards the Epi guitar i see no reason why it can't be gigged. Many people do use them same as Squier basses or guitars some of which are better than the originals. Dave
  19. weirdo Yes i'm only joking with that comment. Please don't take it seriously in any way whatsoever as i do not wish to offend anyone. That should keep me right with everyone Dave
  20. I gigged in 80's/90's without a bass rig. 3 piece band DI'd and thru monitors. Loved my tone and had no trouble hearing it. Our drums were Simmonds kit so everything could be turned down thru PA. These days we sometimes just take a vocal PA. Dave
  21. Great to hear you'll still be playing. We're still gonna miss your excellent workmanship with our cables. If my cables ever give out i'll need to retire cause no-one else makes cables to that quality Dave. Retirement is brilliant. Did it 3 yrs ago now and all stress has disappeared completely. I can now do what i want and when i want as long as my wife approves of course. Enjoy retirement from work. Dave
