To be honest the Ric just didn't suit what i needed at the time. I have recently considered buying another one. Don't let my youth experiences put anyone of the basses i mentioned. All great in their own right. Just depends what you are looking for
-
Probably had a few over the years but in order of how useless they were :- Ric 4003 - always wanted one and after getting it in 80's i found it very limiting in tone. Think i had it about 3-4mths. Shergold 4 & 8 string twin-neck bass - again early 80's (possibly late 70's) was huge Genesis fan me being just 9.5 stone it was just too heavy for me. WAL fretless - My dream bass at that time and again 80's only to find it had a dead spot Eb on G string and WAL weren't interested. Traded for a Fender Jazz. On hindsight after many years with varying basses the dead-spot may have been down to strings or something other than the actual build but i'll never know. Dave

Nice looking P bass. -
should bands carry on when there's only one original member?

Now that works and is very good. Liking that. Somehow the family link makes it feel right and a good way to go if possible. Not sure how i'd feel if the full original band were replaced by younger family members tho. Not forgetting Tim B Schmit aint the original bass player either but he's probably the more famous one these days. -
on one hand YES, on another NO but good to know i can rely on you and your excellent advice sir.

Great wee review of a gorgeous looking bass. Like the maple necks as you seem to get more "twang", "zing" not exactly sure what you call it but its definitely there. I'm with you on the strings. Very zingy at first and then they just fall into a great mid-based tone and i use them until i feel them tightening up a bit on the bass then time to change. They aren't too expensive either and they seem to last me about 3 mths with me playing mostly at home for 1-2 hrs a day and rehearsals every 1-2 weeks with gigs as and when we can. Def my fav bass at moment and i'm slowly selling off my other basses. Just a Fender PJ and an Overwater J4 (not a Tanglewood version tho) and i'll be left with just 4 decent basses. I'll then add a VS4 i reckon or maybe another VM4 with maple to because i really like the Sandberg quality and sound at the moment. I blame Cuzzie for all this Sandberg GAS Dave

Don't you put fresh strings on for every gig ?😜
-
In no particular order but here's my top 10 :- Genesis - Seconds Out Floyd - DSOTM Rush - Moving Pictures Camel - A Live Record Arjen Luccassen - Lost in the New Real Sound of Contact - Dimensionaut Greg Allman - I'm No Angel Chris Cross - Christopher Cross Rainbow - Rising Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards Dave

Do you ever feel you sound like cr*p?!
dmccombe7 replied to Bassmidget209's topic in General Discussion
Most times i think i'm ok within the genres that i play but then i hear someone doing an amazing bass solo like Manring, Berlin or Caron and i slide back into being a 3rd class bassist. I get plenty of compliments from bands i play in but its when i compare against people that can truly play i don't match up. When it comes to sound at a gig i regularly think my bass sounds off but then i see the bass Vids that people post and i think it sound great. Obviously the FOH guy is doing a better job than i am on stage regards bass tone Dave -

Paul Stanley's son is a pretty good guitarist. -
I also like the idea of your tone being pre-selected which means its easily repeatable. Why has this not the norm for passive basses. Surely its not expensive to change one pot to one like this. Dave

Our very own Cetera used to do an excellent job of Gene Simmons so i guess you're right. I liked the older Kiss material Destroyer from 76 being a top 5 fav album over the years unfortunately i've never managed to see them but i've seen a few tributes including Cetera in Dressed to Kill and they have been close to the originals as far as image and stage show goes. Maybe not as huge a show but worth watching for me. Seen Floyd doing the original Wall way back early 80's and the support musicians were playing at one point and sounded just the same. LOL I guess any band can be copied. Dave -
That sounds good. Quite growling around the mid frequencies. I liked 3-5 settings with 3 probably my first choice but in a band setting i might take it up a couple of notches to cut thru a mix.
-
Bet that sounds thunderous in a P bass.
-
Post a pic of your bass as i'm trying to imagine how a T bird pick up looks in a P bass. Dave
-
Oooh that's very nice. Dave
-
Whereabouts are you based ? I've watched a lot of the youtube clips on them but to be honest i'm not usually someone that changes things on a bass unless i absolutely have no choice. I usually just sell it and buy what i need ready made Dave
-
Apologies having just checked its actually a Hiscox Liteflite Standard case i have. Not sure why i got that wrong. Dave
-
Just checked out those Tonestyler units and they are excellent sounding. I can see me moving towards that. Quite liked the 4 way switching version for my Geddy Jazz.
-
I use the SKB that came with my Overwater 6 string but both my Fender J & P basses and my Sandberg VM4 seem fine in the SKB. Can't say i've noticed too much movement in there because the top padding pushes down on the strings to keep the bass steady. Dave

Think Kiss without Gene might be a bit poor as he really is the larger than life main character.
