Same here my right ear as drummer had a crash type cymbal above his snare and decided to run round his kit and cymbals just as i bent down to plug my bass into my mfx unit. Cymbal went right next to my ear full belt too. Its the first time i've actually heard anything that was physically painful. That same ear is now far more sensitive to noise than my "good" ear. I have ACS protection now too but our band don't generally play too loud on stage and current drummer is more techique than power so all good really. Dave

Good point.

Altho i have no preference to be honest i do have it engrained in my head that bass should be on the right. Its what i always imagine in my empty head. Thats with watching too many heavy rock bands from 70's and 80's. Even the Glam Rock bands that i cover the bass was generally on the right when playing live. Bowie, T.Rex, Slade, Mud even Glitter Band. Sweet being a definite exception there as Steve Priest was almost always on the left for live gigs. TOTP not really counting as it was just a mime show. Liking that idea. Much sneakiness there i reckon but done very tastefully. Dave

No real preference to be honest. The keyboard thing is an issue tho. When keys player next to me his backline tends to drown me out at times. We have discussed this after last gig and he's gonna move next to guitarist. Bet the guitarist won't be chuffed I have issues with a lot of keys players when they start doing the bass art with their left hand. Current keys player was brought in to provide some keys backing during guitar solos and maybe provide specific sounds like sax but..............mmmmm enough said.😜 Dave

Me too.

100% my thoughts exactly. Dave

Next up Dave Lee Roth changes his name to Dave Van Halen and its a family band. Dave

We all know EVH is a silly billy. He might have been talented in his day but still a tosser. On the other hand MA is a true star. One of those guys you'd like to meet. When the bass starts on its own te tone is "ok" but when the guitar comes in its just a perfect rock tone for that song. Dave

A good gigging band will replace musicians a lot easier than a start up band. Dave

Great news Blue. One door slowly closes as another slowly opens. Loverboy were a great band in 80's and Charlie Daniels band will be a good gig too. With regards checking sound in the house (i'm assuming you mean gigs) Yes every time. Levels and tone. Even with full PA and engineer supplied i would always get out front and have a wee listen to make sure all sounds good altho you can usually get a good idea from front of stage how the band sounds. Long lead or i now have wireless so that helps. Dave

Did a cover of Hot For Teacher and it made me aware just how good Mike Anthony really is. He's a solid bassist but he has some really nice wee runs when he wants to. I'm quite a fan of his playing. Love his tone on that clip. Dave

I play almost same as he does but i play the riff between verse and chorus when he's singing Sat nights alright alright alright down at lower end using open D i think it is. (just trying to remember while sitting here typing) and i don't recognise the little Geddy riffs this guys putting in near the end but its pretty much the same as i play. Quite enjoyed listening to it. Fantastic Rik sound in the clip. Dave -

We do that in our 70's Glam Rock tribute band. Didn't find it too difficult but you need a fair bit of finger stamina on the end setion especially when our keys player has a solo in the end section. The little triplets he does on the verse G and F are kinda cool tho. Love playing this song. For me its about keeping the bass driving and it seems to work well live that way. With regards the OP's point i generally play the most noticeable bass parts or parts thatpeople will recognise note for note and the other parts as close as possible. Sometimes as the song progresses in the set i'll add a bit more detail if i know i've missed something. The band very rarely notice whether i've played it exactly note for note but they have made complimentary comments on my playing. I'm happy and i'll take anything that's offered no matter how trivial Dave -
What famous musicians death most shocked you

Ouch poor Ringo, poor drummers. -
I get what you are saying but like motorway services its down to greed because they can. I normally don't use batteries and forgot to repack my power supply for some reason. I won't get caught out again plus the shop at bottom of the road sells them far cheaper. Didn't know that at the time. I also don't use motorway service fuel either and will travel into nearest town if required unless midle of the night or i'm in a hurry to get somewhere fast. That's rare these days tho. Cause i'm old Should always be prepared and usually i am. Dave

Now that we've gone thru 6 pages in this thread i've found that a lot more musicians passing either saddened, shocked or surprised me over the years and quite a few i had forgotten about. Its turned out to be quite a sad but interesting thread in that respect. Its also brought back some fond memories over the years of people i used to listen too that sadly are no longer with us. Oddly enough i was quite shocked at Michael Hutchence. I was never a big fan of INXS altho i liked them but i remember thinking it was very sad to lose him in that way and just thinkin what a waste. As you say he had it all. Maybe not happiness tho but so sad. -
First Time Playing Live... What Have I done!!?

Fantastic news. Well done and you managed to follow the band even tho you had never rehearsed the songs with them. Those 3 songs are in our 70's Glam Rock tribute set list and i just love them. I once did 20th Century Boy for an audition and like you i just went with the flow and the band loved it. Glad you enjoyed it and that's what counts most. Now get out there and start a band. Thanks for sharing. Dave -

I'm not so sure its grief in the way you lose a family member or very close friend. For me its just a sadness that someone i admired has now gone and that's the end of their musical output (albiet the vast number of "Best off" albums that will get released.)
