  1. One thing i've noticed with Flatwounds are they generally seem to be 45-105 or upwards. I generally use 40-100 nickels. I like the tension in them compared to the 45-105's Is the tension different on the Flatwounds and what would you recommend for someone that currently likes 40-100 nickel tension. Dave
  2. Think you'll need to explain that one to me ?
  3. Noticed that a few people have them fitted on their Jazz basses which is my preferred bass. I'm liking the idea so gonna try a set. I'll have a look at the EB Cobalts to see what they say about them and then take the plunge. I've only just ut a new set of D'addario nickels on my Jazz bass but my PJ needs a new set so that will be the guinea pig trial run i think. Thanks for the help and advice. Its what makes BC such a great place to be. There's always someone to offer help when needed. Excellent Dave
  4. Do people change because of the feel or is it the tone that attracts people to them on fretted basses Or is it because they last longer ? Dave
  5. I've used flats on fretless basses many yrs ago but was more curious as to using them on a fretted bass. Do they reduce fret noise on fretted basses ? I play mainly rock music Glam Rock at the moment so not sure they will work well in that environment. Think i might give them a try out. I'm a fan of D'addario nickel strings so might try theirs first.
  6. I never claimed to be any wiser with age and some would even say i've gone the opposite way Would like to try out the Mesa Subway cabs at some point but the PH212 weight isn't much of an issue for me at the moment as i can carry on my own at a push plus my bandmates are all very helpful with each others gear. Dave
  7. After reading another thread i noted someone had been converted to using Flat Chromes and they have a Jazz, Precision and Rik basses. Just wondering what kind of tone they give and why people changed and what were they using before. Dave
  8. Best buys this year are mt 2nd hand Mesa Mpulse 600 and an ex-demo Mesa PH212 cab. Wish i had gone down the Mesa route years ago. No worst buys this year I think my GAS is cured for quite some time. Dave
  9. I must have missed something but no matter lets move on.
  10. Nope i never even gave that a 2nd thought but it really should be top of the list as no-one is gonna buy an ugly looking bass. Well done that man. Dave
  11. For me and this was harder to decide on than i first thought after reading your original post. Was quite fun tho. 1. neck has to feel right and makes me think i'm playing better. 2. pick ups. I've tried various styles of pick ups ie Jazz, Precision and Humbuckers and def prefer the sound of Jazz style pick ups. 3. Amp - its taken me many years to find an amp head that i just love the tone having gone thru all valve to SS to class D and back to tube / SS Mesa head. 4. Cab - again i've tried many cabs and come to the conclusion that the depth of a cab has a large influence on its overall tone. I like a tone that i feel as well as hear. Gone thru the 412 cabs, 215 cabs both front facing and reflex, 210, 410 & 810 cabs, 112 lightweight cabs and variations on them incl my Berg HT322 (12, 2X10's & horn) and finally settling on my Mesa PH212 which has a wonderful warm clear tone that surrounds me when i'm playing. Great depth of tone yet retains its clear mids 5. Strings are important but i can get by on most nickel strings as long as they aren't too old. D'addario nickels changed every 2-3mths depending on use. DOESN'T MATTER :- 1. Active circuits - i have them and apart from my Overwater i still tend to run my basses flat when it comes to the actives. That's probably one of the reasons i prefer my Jazz bass most. 2. Effects pedals :- tried them and eventually end up sticking with my straight bass sound with exception of a touch of compressor pedal if my amp doesn't already have it but i can get by without the compression. I just find it balances my volume a bit more especially when i get carried away in the moment and i start playing very hard with my right hand. Dave
  12. That'll be me then. I'll take that as a compliment
  13. Serious question :- how does he make money from YT. ? Dave
  14. Shops don't have a great selection of gear up here. I was looking to trial the new Mesa Subway range but no-one had the full rigs unless i paid a hefty deposit to get them in. Shops in Glasgow are very limited in amp depts. I tend to listen to many YT vids or reviews and also write up reviews and ask people what they think. I've had a lot of advice and help from fellow BCers. Its a bit more difficult with a bass as they are more a personal thing than an amp. For me i very rarely get to try gear before buying. Dave
  15. Only issue with backing tracks is i've found that the track is sometimes far too loud and drowns out the bass itself. Pretty sure you will master that no probs tho. Altho the bass playing isn't really important on an amp or even a bass review i quite like the clips where the intro is the bass player showing some nice moves on the bass and then goes into the review. I find that gives me an idea of the guys ability and provides me with the confidence that he knows his way around gear and hopefully knows what he's talking about. Sometimes its good to ask your audience what they like. Looks like you got some very positive feedback and i certainly appreciate what you do for us. Hope all is well soon and you get to enjoy Xmas without worry. All the best Dave
  16. I quite enjoy this guys clips. Not sure i could play it all but i could manage most of it with a little practice Dave
  17. Would think a good quality looper would be fine. Many pros use them on their demos. Guys like Fredrico Malaman use them to give a backing track to solo over. No idea what type he uses. Michael Manring too. When you hear the original riff against the looped riff it sounds pretty much same to me with headphones on. Dave
  18. Yep i could see me going to that gig whoever the band might have been
  19. I'd go with approx 10-15 mins. Should be long enough to get the demo across. Short bass run done as fingerstyle, pick, chords and slap with the main features of the amp being shown. For me personally i would be happy just to hear fingerstyle and pick as those styles are what majority of us use most of the time. Chords and slap are usually styles that we add to embelish the song and show off a little but most of us have a basic style of finger or pick There will always be the exception to the rule. Dave
  20. Yep that's a good idea. Liking that altho it could prove to be a little boring but it would mean the review could be shorter and straight to the main item. Yep i'd like to see that even just out of curiosity. Dave
  21. Yep i do that plus i add in things i want to get other people so i don't forget.
  22. 1200W 412 Aguilar just doesn't get better especially at that price. Hard to believe its being sold that low. GLWTS Dave
  23. Like the idea of the white cans at stage front and colours from sides. Makes a lot of sense. Dave
  24. Our band mentioned earlier called The Monday Club folded so all clear there. 👍 Dave
