My Mpulse with an 8ohm cab at home i have the GAIN at approx 12 o'clock mid-point and Master Volume between 9 o'clock and 10 which i think is between 2-3 on a 0-10 scale. At rehearsals the master will be between 3-4 or 10 o'clock and 11. That drops by approx 1 when using my 4ohm cab. Must be a very quiet gig you were playing or the M6 is a lot louder than my Mpulse. Why not just turn your bass volume down ? Does using the wireless not take you into active territory as it's now an electronic signal rather than passive. (i'm curious about that myself) I've used my Jazz bass in both active and passive modes on my Mesa Mpulse and never noticed any difference in tone. Just a change in volume. On the other hand i mistakenly played my active PJ in passive mode and it sounded quite flat. Dave

I can play with a high action but i find it very limiting. Currently running my Jazz at just under 2mm. I get cramp if i'm playing too long with a high action Dave

I downloaded Jeff Berlin's book "A Comprehensive Chord Tone System for Mastering Bass" with the intention of working my way through it. So far i've managed to download it. 2019 i think i'll make a start on reading it and practicing some of his ideas. I've been playing since 1976 and did take lessons for about 1-2yrs or thereabouts. Got the basics and the guy giving the lessons said i know enough to go out and learn the rest on my own. I believed him and altho i've done OK with the little music theory i had i've always thought it wasn't enough for me hence the Berlin book. I quite fancy the Jazz Theory book more so as a reference for when i want to push myself a bit and work my way thru over time. I don't want a book to become an every day occurence where i'm back at school kind of thing. Just when i've no new songs to learn and i'm bored i can just pick up the book and give myself that little extra kick in the pants. Thanks for starting the thread and i'm curious as to how others react as its a very emotional topic on forums as to who does read music and who doesn't. For me i'll use whatever i can to get the job done. By ear, bass tabs or sheet music i don't care how i get there as long as i get there and the song is done correctly. Dave

String spacing was something i'd never paid much attention too but when i went back and checked almost all my basses have been 18mm spacing. Few yrs back i thought i would try 6 string basses and bought an ESP which had 16 or 16.5mm spacing and it completely thru me. I kept missing strings or hitting the wrong strings. When i played the bass a lot and no other bass i got used to it reasonably quick. It didn't cause me a problem going back to 18mm spacing for some weird reason. Now i tend to go for 18mm spacing on my basses. With regards the different necks i can adapt to most basses altho i found the Precision and Musicman necks a bit wide for me but i can adapt quite quickly to them. I just feel much happier with my slim Jazz or Warwick Thumb NT necks. All my basses currently have 18mm spacing including 5 and 6 stringers Dave

Saw them at Glasgow Apollo around 1978. Lights Out album was out round about that time. My older brother was a fan of theirs so i went with him.

Wasn't at the gig myself but my friends were at the Glasgow gig and said Stevie Winwood was really good too.

They were rehearsing in the studio next door to us 2 weeks ago before playing Glasgow mid week. Studio corridors were littered with large flight cases. Guitar techs setting up guitars in the rest areas of the corridors. That was worth watching. One flightcase had several guitars and only one bass. The case next to it when opened was a work area with a PC screen attached to the underside of the lid so when opened he had tuning and set up software on it when we walked past. He was in process of restringing a guitar. Was a bit odd having all these American accents in the area. Not used to hearing that in the studios. Dave

I've still got to work the detail on it but the basics are relatively easy and just nice to play. Played alng with it a couple of times so far but that's it at the moment. Maybe this week i'll sort out the wee runs during the chorus. Dave

You don't get car mechanics now ........vehicle technicians Labourers........site operative Fitter ......... mechanical technician or engineer Electrician (industrial) ......electrical technician or engineer Production / Plant operative...............production / Plant engineer even routine jobs like boiler servicing / repairs or home alarm systems you get Service Engineer. Years back an engineer was someone who had achieved degree status at college or University and was generally hired for his theoretical knowledge rather than hands on. All change these days Dave

WOW that must have been some gig for you.

When i bought my Jazz bass quite a few yrs ago it came with Fender strings and i started putting on the Fender nickel 7250's. Few yrs ago i decided to try others and ended up with the D'addario EXL190's I've been using Daddario EXL190 Nickel or variations around that gauge but nearly always come back to the 190's. Thought i would go back to the 7250's as i had heard D'addario were making them (if that's true ?). Put them on today and found the feel was actually smoother than the EXL190's but the twang wasn't quite as noticeable with the Fenders. They feel god to play tho and at £12.99 from GAK they are a lot cheaper. I did notice that the G & D strings are slightly more noticeable than the EXL190's Not sure if its a volume thing or just the string tone makes it sound more upfront. Its not a lot and only something i would notice at home but not at a gig. Again its not really obvious across the 4 fender strings but just compared to the D'addarios. Curious to see how long they'll last as the EXL190's were on for 3mths altho i wasn't using that particular bass in the band and just at home. My Precision has had EXL190's on for 2mths now and they still sound OK and just starting to go slightly dull. The P bass is the one i use most in my current band. If they last a minimum of 2mths on my jazz i'll maybe start using them across my basses again. I do like the D'addarios but when a string is 2/3 the price then its a no brainer for me. Dave

On some songs i've done where bassline changes every chorus i'll just play the same chorus notes each time unless its a specific stand out bassline but that's not normal in most songs. I'll write the full song out note for note anyway but as you say it's remembering what chorus has what bassline. Most people don't or won't notice. Just pick the best of the chorus bass lines and if its a tricky line then do that one. You'll enjoy playing it more and if the audience does pick up on it they'll see that you learned the harder part. Sneakiness is my forte Dave
