Help to motivate to play when depressed
dmccombe7 replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
I'm afraid i don't know much or enough about depression and what it is so i can't imagine what you are going thru but i think the advice already given has been really promising. I took a break for about 15yrs for other reasons and like others above when i got back into it again aged 50 it was like a new lease of life. Take a short break and see what it feels like. Are you able to refocus on something else. For some it might be work that actually helps pull you out of depression but that depends on the job. I used to find a breakdown where i was totally engrossed in fault finding just seemed to clear my mind of any other issues i had. Not sure if that makes any sense to you. ? Musically what about learning another instrument as a challenge ? Dave -
Did you get the list i gave you on the other tribute band post ? I attended a birthday party in the Rolls Royce club and they had the live band in Trex tribute act. Its just off Paisley Road i think not far from Ibrox. Might be worth trying some clubs as well Dave

Not gonna manage the gigs this time around as other commitments but will be keeping an eye out for you next time around. You should try the Motherwell Concert or Theatre hall next time up in Scotland. Large venues and many tribute bands playing their these days. Also Lanark Memorial Hall, Rutherglen Town Hall and Hamilton Town Hall are all good sized venues looking for good quality tribute bands -

Hug & Pint Nice & Sleazy McSorleys Maggie Mays (live bands but not sure what type of music altho i think its classed as a rock bar) 13th Note (again not sure what type of bands play there) Stereo The Glad Cafe Bloc+ Blackfriars The Howlin Wolf The Scotia The Admiral Hope some of these help. These are all smaller venues that put on live bands but i'm not 100% sure what style they are putting on. You might be better googling each venue to get an idea or checkout their own FB pages for VID clips or pics. Failing that a wee band pub crawl on a Sat night might be fun. All the best mate and hope it all works out. Dave -

I'm 50 miles south of Glasgow and these days don't go there unless its a particular band i want to see or its mates band and i get in free I've kind of lost touch with what venues are suited to rock bands these days. My days of playing rock gigs in Glasgow was more 80's when we hada good choice of venues available. Try asking the question on your own FB page and see what your friends come up with. It might surprise you the list of venues you might get especially if the full band does it. There are a couple of venues on Sauchiehall St near each other that might be of interest to you I know one of them is called The Box and the other one is downstairs and about 2 doors along the street ? Solid Rock maybe ? Dave -

Ivory Blacks are always a good option and the Ferry might slot you in a s a support to make a start on gigging front. I know Classic Grand and Hard Rock Cafe does tribute bands but not sure whether they are thru agents only. Think if you advertise your gigs as Zep soundalike or a tribute to the music of Led Zep then people that are interested will come along. You would be best loking for venues who generally have a rock background or clientele. My mate plays in The Led Zep but they generally play larger venues altho they have done some smaller pub venues as an acoustic set. Not every tribute act looks like the artist they are copying but i have found the ones doing the bigger venues the singer as a minimum looks the part Dave -

WOW that's like listening to Kate Bush and visually not far off either. Would love to see this band somewhere. -
Going off thread a bit. When i suggested this I meant start a full new topic. Didn't want to hijack someone else's thread. Anyone want to start it off ? Dave

Yep same name different artists and different versions

Funny how things have turned around but i remember that too. Any more than one song from a band and you get slated -
Good topic for another thread methinks. Songs with same name but different. ?

I'm the exception to the rule. I'll learn any song the band decides on and usually go a little further and learn the ones they talk about maybe doing in future. Early retirement does have its advantages of course. Just means when it comes round to doing them i'm already up to speed altho recently learned one and they decided it didn't really fit with us even before trying it but hey ho cant win them all. I have come across that with guitarists up here tho so your theory might just stand its ground there. Dave
-
A good singer would have ad-libbed the right version Dave

Hawd oan a minute there you twa. Yir painting a very poor picture o us Scotsmen. You cannae have it both ways. We're either ginger or bald but not both. I've never seen a bald ginger Scotsman I know loads of Scotsmen with that attitude, they're not that rare to be honest. Dave

Nice Dougie. Had a wee listen on your FB page. Berkeley studios i reckon. Some nice bass runs you're throwing in there too. All the very best with the project. Dave -

I only joined them in 2016 so no idea who that would be. Glad i don't know him by sounds of it. Sorry to hear it happened. Don't let it put you off the Hot Love band tho as they are a pretty good outfit. Gigging twice a week most weekends on not bad money either. Dave -

When was that as they've had about 18 bass players in about 15yrs i think including me for a short spell. Midge is spot on and very likeable guy. I don't really know the current bassist too well just to say hello kinda thing but drummer is Greg Midge's son and keys is JP and that's the only name i can remember calling him. The 3 of them were all the nicest guys i had played in a band with just all a bit too much demand on my time asking me to learn 34 songs in 3 weeks and then another 20 for the next week was all just a bit too much for me. Without any band rehearsals too but i still keep in touch with Midge and was at his birthday party couple months ago. -

No afraid not. The singer / guitarist & Bolan lookalike is Midge Peebles. -
Bands you just discovered that made you go “Wow!”

I was the same when i first heard them few yrs back wondering why i had never heard of them before even tho they were a huge US band. Weird but nice. Dave -
That really used to annoy the Heck out of me but lucky enough current band doesn't have that attitude at all.
-
Exactly same attitude i have so not heavy or intense at all. If you want a band to work you need to put the effort in otherwise you are just wasting each others time and money. Dave
