  1. This thread is surprising me quite a bit. Most audiences i've played to in rock venues are generally interested in the full band thing. Don't get me wrong i've been in pub venues watching a band where people couldn't care less and were more interested in chatting and drinking. Would agree the bassist generally isn't the front man and only rare cases where he is the star of the band Geddy, Gene Simmons Mark King being a few examples but they are relatively rare. My own attitude when a band is on is that i want to watch and hear them. Dave
  2. Did the Doors not use a bass player for live work occasionally. ? Tangerine Dream the only other i can think of on my fav bands. That's a bit of a struggle to think of any tho. Could make for an interesting thread Al Krow. Dave
  3. I'd like to know who this Sharon is that keeps hanging around my gigs
  4. Sorted thanks for that but still all good for me whether playing or laying Dave
  5. Its all coming across as a wee bit negative and depressing here guys. Can't say i've really noticed anything too untoward when i'm playing. I generally get quite good comments after playing and never been heckled. Must be doing something right then. Dave
  6. Hey watch it.........Dave's have feelings too you know. Dave 👍
  7. Average pub audience will notice a band being too loud or a bass being to boomy. They'll notice levels between members isn't quite right ie gtr too loud or couldn't hear the singer. Not usually bass or drum levels tho as they are the reference point for everyone else. They will notice a band that is enjoying themselves compared to a band that is all serious and no interaction with the audience. As a bass player they probably have no idea what bass or gear i'm using and as long it sound ok they will be happy. If i'm in the audience i will be specifically looking at bass gear and his ability and tone first of all and then looking at the other members gear and how they play. Thats assuming they have a good overall sound. If they sound crap i leave. Majority of venues i've played have a fair collection of other musicians for some reason but that's more on the heavy rock side of music. Dave
  8. Didn't think there prices were anything special. Dave
  9. I would add that concert ticket prices have gone up considerably compared to album prices whether that be vinyl, cd or streaming. Going back to 70's an album would cost almost the same price as some concert tickets. These days an album is circa £10 compared to a minimum £50 for a concert ticket hence more income from concerts. Dave
  10. All before my time Its Blues i think
  11. Its all getting a bit too in-depth and descriptive for me. This could be leading into Frasier Crane territory Dave
  12. Had a look at the bass you're talking about which has the J pick up to the neck side and the humbucker style at the bridge. My J4 has twin humbuckers so the J picks ups wouldn't work for me. Checked out the Entwhistle pick ups and he only does J and P styles at the moment for bass. Will keep looking tho. Thanks for getting back to me. Much appreciated. Liking the passive idea too. Dave
  13. Did the Entwhistle fit straight in to the Overwater space without any body mods. ? Dave
  14. I've not heard much about Entwhistle but will give them a google see what's said about them. I quite like having passive as no batteries to worry about. Thanks for that Dave
  15. I use a Hiscox case for most basses. It came with my Overwater custom 6 string but my Fenders fit very well too. My Thumb bass is a bit narrower on the body and rattles a bit so need to pack it out with foam if i take the Warwick. My Overwater Contemp J4 is too long for it and i had to buy a rectangular case for that one. I did consider a custom fitted case for my Thumb bass but to be honest i very rarely use it other than at home. Hiscox case is well built and doesn't feel as bulky to carry as the rectangular case. I noted someone mentioned stacking cases but to be honest i generally load them into vehicles on their edge with the handle facing upwards. I've always found guitars or basses stacked flat in any vehicle tend to slide about a lot. Only thing i would suggest is that if your bass is very expensive then consider a custom fit case. If its a standard Fender then the Hiscox would be a good buy. Afraid i have no experience with the SKB bass cases. Dave
  16. Good question, i'm not sure to be honest
  17. Cheers Lee, The new band won't be giiging until start 2019 due to booking commitments with other bands. Not sure what the PA arrangements will be at this point but will give you a shout when i find out. I believe most gigs will have a house PA but our drummer is buying a full QSC rig for this and his other band so will wait and see how it all pans out. Really appreciate your offer. Dave
  18. +1 This. Sounds like he's trying to recreate what he thinks a bass should sound like rather than what the bass player wants to sound like. Used to be pretty common when your sound guy was into YES back in the day. Lot of guitarists have that problem when they mix a bass tone on their own. Its all smiley faced to extreme. Ramp up the bottom and top ends and forget the mids. Does he understand what frequencies affect bass tone. He should be listening to the sound you have on stage and simply recreating that sound FOH
  19. Not even sure if my car radio has digital reception ? I never play the radio in the car these days because its all stupid irrelevant pop C**p. Maybe i should lok into it a bit more Dave
  20. The bit about radio stations is spot on. I remember quite a few great radio stations that played a wide variety of styles of music on the one show. The DJ made his choics. Then the financial side took over and stations were paid by who-ever to play certain bands. The stations made more money and the DJ's were forced to play a list based on who paid the most. At that point we lose a valuable radio station to corporate greed. I think one station had no involvement from DJ's it was back to back music. The music was the star of the show. These days the DJ's think they are the stars of the show and its all about them. If one station took the leap of faith and played proper music that people want to hear rather than DJ's rabbitting on about a load o c**p they will get a huge listening audience. Doesn't matter what station you play these days its the same songs that get played on them all. Dave
  21. I have current band set list saved as playlist on ipod in car. I used to use CD changers in cars a lot but they start getting problems after a lot of use. The Ipod is so much easier and less hassle. Don't use the bluetooth tho as i prefer leaving it plugged in and fully charged thru the USB. It still allows me to use the steering wheel controls too. Dave
