What do you value about your local music shop?
dmccombe7 replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
Usually i get the train into Glasgow but its a bit of an adventure on its own. Not so bad getting there altho it can take 1.5hrs because of the train route where i can drive in less than an hour. On way home the local bus normally waits for the train getting in but if the train is even a few minutes delayed the bus leaves and its another hour till the next bus. Its over £20 for a taxi from station to our house. I usually make a day out of it with my wife. She does her clothes shops while i visit Guitar Guitar. Cost of fuel and parkng charges won't be much different than 2 off return train tickets "Simples" but not ideal Dave -

Can't say i've ever used Paypal F&F so didn't know that. I still think its sellers responsibility to ensure the item reaches the buyer. He should have had it fully insured even if that meant stating on his post that courier insurance would be extra if not pick up only. Dave -
Number of ways for me over past 8 yrs. Join My Band Gumtree Bandmix (you need to pay for membership tho) Current band was thru a FB advert altho it was thru a friends page and been lucky with this one as its a project i've been trying to put together for about 6yrs with no success and then this came out the blue. Thru mates or word of mouth. That can be either you asking around or ofers from people you know or who may already know of you as a bassist. Other ways :- Rehearsal studios usually have a post it board where bands are loking for members Local music shops used to have a post it board too Dave

I thought payment by Paypal would cover you. They have a 180 day policy that if you don't recieve the goods they will offer a full refund. I know this because i'm currently awaiting a decsion on Gift Experience going into liquidation and altho it was over the 180 day period they said they would investigate and if no response from seller in 10 days they would make a decision on it. Yours is only circa 90 days so should be covered. Dave -
Well that would be me then usually right down the front.

I think Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous. Sure some of that was recorded at Glasgow Apollo. Also sure some of Rush Live album was recorded at Glasgow Apollo altho can't remember which one 1st or 2nd would need to double check that. If they were then i was there. Was also at The Wall by Pink Floyd in Earls Court first time around. That might be on a live album or VID in those days. Dave

Nice subtle touch there. Stay in the good books with the "current" girlfriend. Dave -
I've played and have some really cheap basses and they are far better than some expensive ones i've tried. Was disappointed with a Spector at £1200 i thought was like playing a plank of wood. The neck just didn't feel right but that's down to personal preference i guess

Well done. At least you've come to a decision. OR HAVE YOU ???? Dave

Recommend me a bag for carrying stuff to gigs
dmccombe7 replied to ianwild16's topic in General Discussion
I use a laptop bag bought thru Amazon. Takes my leads, power cables and speaker cables, tuner and compressor pedals if required, notepad or music sheets whatever is required for rehearsals, spare batteries, pens, etc and keep my car keys and bank cards etc while rehearsing (its kept at my feet during rehearsals at all times i've even carried my GK MB200 as a spare but it gets a little crowded in there. At times i wish it was a little bigger tho. Another couple inches deeper. (ooh Matron !!!!!) Dave -
The BassChat Podcast - [FEEDBACK THREAD] - EPISODE 2 OUT NOW

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Its good to find out a bit about others on BC rather than just the name. Looking forward to the next one. Dave -
They are open at weekends ? To be fair my wife has bought most of my basses as presents for special birthdays or even Xmas presents. I'm not a big spender thru the year so it balances out with her regular shopping trips Dave

Take the family with you and try and make a day out of it. I don't have the young baby to contend with but my wife came with me to Bass Direct and Mark and the staff made her very welcome. I think it was about 300miles each way. We left very early, stopped for coffee breaks every 2 hrs or thereabouts, got to shop and tried out the different basses in my budget. Ones i fancied first then what the shop thought i might like and afterwards we went for lunch with the bass tucked safely away and hidden from sight off course. Took our time going home and stopped off for an early dinner before getting home. I'm not saying drive those kind of distances but maybe a little clsoer for you i hope. I had given it a lot of thought and fair bit of planning to make sure i arrived at a reasoanable time and not be rushed into buying something because i had just driven 300miles. I've tried a Dean bass and it was OK but not really for me but if all you are doing is bedroom bass playing it should be adequate. If the 5 string is gonna be "the goto bass" then you would want a reasonably good quality instrument. I'm kinda hoping i'm helping here but maybe not Dave

But you don't look anywhere near that age Blue so be careful what you wear. You don't want to look older than need be

Attitude Clothing have some good gear. That's where i got my Demonia boots for Glam Rock band. https://www.attitudeclothing.co.uk/ I also buy from ebay but you need to type in a specific search to narrow it down or you get 10k- 12k to look thru. For our Glam band i'd punch in Shiny metallic jeans or sequined jackets and go from there. Just punch in a search for stage wear or stage gear UK and see what comes up. Dave

Do you have any mates that might have a god quality one you could try. ? No idea your budget but is it possible to sell the Warwick and buy a good quality 5 stringer and maybe a cheaper Squier 4 string as well. I think its the Squier VM series that are the better ones. All 2nd hand basses. If you have people selling a 5 er near you why not go round and try before you buy. You don't need to buy and you can always make up an excuse not to buy it. I have a 5 string Dingwall that i bought from Bass Direct. I drove down from Glasgow area to try some 5 ers out before buying. My point being that sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and travel to the better shops to try before buying. Once you've tried certain basses you can then scout about for 2nd hand ones on BC. Always good buys on here for 4 and 5 string basses and most guys would probably let you try it before buying. Hope you manage to come to a decision and find whats best for you. All the best Dave

There are a lot of guys doing that style on 5 and 6 string basses so i'm guessing its just down to keeping at it with the bass that suits and with the correct spacing that you need. Why not try a few in your local bass store to see how you get on with them. ? I haven't mastered that double thumb technique but there's no need for me to use it in the styles of music i play in. I do use my thumb for finger picking styles but not quite the double thumb trick. Maybe i need to give that a try as its always a new challenge to conquer 👍 Being a mainly 4 string player I would suggest in your circumstances you stick with a 5 stringer and it will eventually give you what you need from a bass. The low B and once used to it a bass that covers everything you need. Dave

I wrote a book about being in a covers band

That fact has probably saved her life. -
Mine is one of the early ones an 89 NT so maybe they've changed the spec. Just had a quick check and the 4 strings are 18-19mm but their standard 5 and 6 strings are 16.5mm altho they do a wide neck at 20mm Wasn't aware of that so every day a schol day. I've only ever played their 4 string basses. Dave
-
Excellent advice. Gonna give thesea a try as i recognised some of the issues you described. Thanks for sharing Dave

I'm surprised your Warwick doesn't do what you want. My Thumb bass has 18mm spacing an i was under the impression that was standard across their range. I have 4, 5 and 6 string basses but i nearly always go for my 4 string basses because i'm happier with them. I use the others when i'm asked to go lower depending on the band or studio requirements. Does your Warwick not have adjustable saddle spacing to widen the string gap. ? I first picked up an ESP 6 string when i decided to expand from 4 and found the string spacing was 16mm and i kept hitting the wrong strings with my right plucking hand. I moved from that to an Overwater which has 18mm. Nearly all of my basses have 18mm spacing. I know what you mean by being too narrow tho. I would say that if you currently have a 5 string then that's maybe what you should stick with. The more you use that as your sole instrument the better you'll get with it. There are many good quality 5 string basses out there and not knowing your budget its difficult to advise what basses to try. No idea about the headphones other than i use Sennheisers that i've had for several years now and can't remember the model. Dave

Would think a P bass into the Terror head and a decent cab would be spot on even for the "modern" blues. At the end of the day the bass players with the bands you mentioned will more than likely be using Ampeg 810 with an old school valve head more than likely Ampeg again. From what i could see on Youtube John Mayers and Kenny Wayne Shephard are using Fender basses into Ampeg altho its not clear what amp head is in use but def Ampeg. Think as long as its a smooth well rounded deep sound it will be just fine. I would use nickels rather than flats but that's just personal taste and i don't really know how flats sound on a bass these days unless its a fretless. Think you might be over-thinking this. Last year i was doing a similar project and used my PJ bass into either my GK1001RBii, Markbass or Ampeg SVT4 Pro and they all sounded great. No real fav between them. All slightly different but all sounded good. Dave

I've played with rock drummers that made it look as if they were hardly using any effort but the noise or the sound produced was far more aggressive than those that just hit hard. I've come to the conclusion drumming is all about the technique.
-
I love the idea of that but drummers old school altho he's not overly loud but doesn't like electronic kits. We rehearse at volumes we can communicate over so its not too bad with my current band. If anything we need to turn up at times to get a better tone from the cabs we use in the studio (Ampeg 810's)
