  1. Not sure if this might help but i downloaded it from somewhere to get a better understanding of chords. If not just download and store for future reference Jeff_Berlin_-_A_Comprehensive_Chord_Tone_System_for_Mastering_the_Bass_1987.pdf
  2. Don't think learning 11 standard songs in a couple of weeks is too difficult for most people. For me its more about why so many for an audition. Surely 3-5 songs is more than enough to judge someone's ability on bass or any instrument for that matter especially if you pick a varied selection of songs that will make the bass part stand out a bit and ensure he is tested rather than just 3-5 plodders with nothing much for the bassist to do. I would have to question the bands ability to be able to judge if they ask me to learn 11 songs for an audition. If i can't impress in 3-5 songs then playing 11 isn't gonna be much better in my opinion. Unless as you've already mentioned you are the drummers. The drummer may have told them you already know and play these songs in another band and it should be a skoosh for you.
  3. If i was auditioning someone for my band it would be based on how well he played the given songs and his ability to blend with the band members rather than how many songs he got thru but missed parts. He needs to nail the parts of the song where the bass is more prominent or recognizable. Quality rather than quantity for me. If he gets 9 out of 11 almost perfect but during that he managed to gel with the band and came across as a nice person that would get along on a personal level then that would be my gut instinct. Sounds like this band are looking for a bass player that comes from a similar background and has already been playing most of the set in their current or recent band set up. Dave
  4. After reading rest of the thread and hearing from guys that know them i would probably change my approach and try and do as many as possible if its the band you've been waiting for. Sounds like they are a serious gigging band so give it your best shot. Dave
  5. I've usually done 3-5 songs for an audition. I've also been sent a large list and asked to pick 3-5 from that list. Is that maybe what they are expecting from you ? To ask someone to learn 11 songs for an audition where they might not get the job is asking too much. I've done auditions where i had 3 songs to learn, got the job and was then asked to learn 34 songs in 3 weeks without rehearsals. That was hard going. Did the gigs and then asked to learn another 20 songs in 10 days and decided enough was enough and said i just wasn't able to keep that kind of learning pace going and had to part ways. Still on good terms with them and they have asked me to dep a few times. I think maybe you should check with them about number of songs for the audition itself. Dave
  6. Originally listened to it with just the laptop speakers and it seemed a bit thin. Put headphones on and it came to life with a lot more depth. The layered vocals work a treat. Not sure if its a harmonizer or double tracking kind of thing but sounds good. Liking the bass fills at the end tho. Not really my style of music so i'm no expert i'm afraid but its well done and wish you all the best with it. Dave
  7. You don't normally need planning permission to install a loft ladder. Unless its a listed house of historic value kind of thing. Loft isn't ideal as gets very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. Are you talking proper loft conversion as a live in space or just to floor it with access ladder mainly as a storage area. ? Dave
  8. I was more a fan of the Fish era Marillion altho some of the songs since have been excellent i just can't get into the "new" line up in same way. I buy an album and some tracks are great and others i find a bit tedious so stopped buying their albums. Think those 2 songs might be on the "possibilities" list
  9. Just think its maybe a bit risky Paul and many people might take offence at playing it but who knows it might be worth learning one or two and as you say we can ask the crowd before playing them if anyone objects. We coud cheat and say its by the Glitter Band as in effect it was Dave
  10. And not forgetting our very own Bay City Rollers of course
  11. Sweet, T.Rex, Bowie, Slade, Mud and many others were all exceptional bands. We don't play any Gary Glitter songs for the obvious reasons even tho our drummer was in The Glitter Band (not the original band but the early 90's reincarnation). There's no getting away from the fact he did contribute some good Glam Rock songs. Can't condone or forgive what he has done tho. Dave
  12. Not sure any particular song made me want to play bass but if it did then it was probably Deep Purple Smoke On The Water or Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Was so long ago now its all a bit vague. Dave
  13. One of the biggest things for me that came out of the 70's was the Glam Rock era. Loved it then and still do. That's why i'm in a Glam covers band now.
  14. Think its the guitarists wife Brandi that took over playing bass.
  15. Ozric Tentacles are still going. Have a couple of mates that are huge fans of them and never miss a local gig by them in Glasgow. I can see why many people thought Prog was tedious as it was more about technical ability and long drawn out songs that even myself as a Prog fan would find a bit too much and then along came the punk guys and i loved that change of pace too. Altho i never regarded myself as a punk fan having hair down to my waist into mid to late 80's i really enjoyed a lot of the punk bands incl Pistols, Clash, Sham 69, Skids and Motors to name some i can remember. That was wiped aside by New Romantic movement if memory serves me right and many of those bands started off from punk bands but wanted fashion to play a part in their music. Again some great bands came out of that some of which are still going. Dave
  16. I'm a fan of Prog and used to think Prog peaked in 70's with Genesis & Floyd but over last 10 years i started reading the Prog mag and the free CD's gave me an insight into some fantastic bands i thought had retired many years before and some other "new" Prog bands i'd simply never heard off. IQ were a good example. They were an ok Prog band back in their early years but their more recent album Road of Bones is up there in my top 10 Prog albums. Arjen Luccanssen another example where Lost In The New Real album again in my top 10. I agree with someones comment that music genres haven't really peaked but continue to improve either in production, writing or technical ability. Will punk ever make a resurgence ? who knows ? I do know many musicians that play in punk covers or even tribute bands so its still a hugely popular era to this day as their bands are always busy gigging. I like the occasional Fleetwood Mac songs but Rumours was played everywhere i went when it was released to the point i got sick of it to the point i wouldn't buy anything from Fleetwood Mac. I don't think they are leaders of everything that came after but were simply part of an era that others things followed from. As for the WHO again liked the occasional songs but have never bought an album except for a compilation album so i could learn one of their songs. I do like Baba Riley tho. Dave
  17. "Its Rock captain but not as we know it" They are Rock but for me they are more Pop Rock. Not that it matters they are still Rock. Had never heard of Wolf Alice before and youtubed them. Quite like them. Quite a varied sound across their songs and hard to define them into any one category to be honest. Not heard much more than occasional hit song from Biffy either.
  18. See where you're coming from now. In a way i agree. When popular music gets bland something powerful and refreshing comes along to sweep all the drivel away. I guess that's happened quite a few times over past 50 yrs. Dave
  19. Are you ??? Try dropping hints about her shoes and clothes (and don't forget the hanbags to match the shoes) invading the house. If she can have more than one pair of shoes or one handbag then why can't you have more than one bass, more than one amp, one bass cab, one PA I think you might be onto something with this train of thought............failing that Premier Inns have cheap rooms most nights until she calms down. Dave😊
  20. Basses hidden in Belgium ? that's a bit extreme. I keep all my gear in spare room that is my man cave and lighting rig in heated garage. Those are designated men areas I do enjoy complaining about all the shoes or boots she leaves lying in our hallway at front door or at the back garden door. That usually gets me an evil look of distain or a quick snap of i'm using them soon...........all 4 pairs within the next 2 hrs You gotta have some fun in life you know.
  21. i just don't get that at all i'm afraid even tho you posted in stereo Wylie
  22. Had to laugh at the band showing up in the Craft Room. Nice touch. Have you any relatives left Dave ?
