String Cleaners/boiling/coated Strings and General tone
dmccombe7 replied to thundachopz's topic in General Discussion
Wouldn't mind trying these strings but at £10 for shipping for a set at just over £4 is a bit much. Maybe if i buy something more expensive i'll add a set in to the order. I have Elixir strings on my Warwick Thumb. They def do last at least a year but i find the tension a bit tighter than standard of same gauge. Smooth feel to them right enough. They don't have that same zing you get from new strings even straight out the pack. They have an even tone from the word go and i think the tone does change but at a much slower rate and you tend not to notice the deterioration as much. Might actually try a set on my Jazz gigging bass to see how they feel. Dave- 46 replies

Help needed to source hi-fi component: KEF speaker crossover
dmccombe7 replied to magee's topic in General Discussion
That surprsied me as he did the Godin guitar pre-amp for me and i refitted it in the guitar again. Wonder why he doesn't do hi-fi gear. ? Same basic principles i would have thought. Looks like Falcon Acoustics will be a good bet. All the ebst with it. Dave -
Bass Guitar Magazine and Bass Player to merge
dmccombe7 replied to Kevsy71's topic in General Discussion
I used to buy the mag if i was thinking about getting some new gear then i joined BC and i now suffer constant GAS. I quite like an occasional read thru a bass Mag tho. Sometimes you get some interesting items. Dave -
There's a topic just appeared on BC asking about Revelation bass at £200. It loks pretty impressive. Jazz shape body, P bass neck and twin P pick ups. Seems to be getting some good comments so far. Dave

Help needed to source hi-fi component: KEF speaker crossover
dmccombe7 replied to magee's topic in General Discussion
Not sure if this would be of interest but if its just cross-over parts why not try an electronics repair. I use Glasgow Studio Electronics for all my repairs from Ampegs, Trace amps to Godin guitar pre-amp. Iain will repair anything electronic with excellent workmanship. Might be worth trying him. Never found him too expensive either. http://www.glse.co.uk/ I think he may be on Paternity leave at moment but he usually replies to his mobile quite quickly. Also try these guys i found on line altho i've never used them ? http://www.retrotechaudio.co.uk/classic-kef-spares.html Dave -
I bought one of those Smart Tellys few yrs ago. I added the USB hard drive to enable recording only to find that i can only record the channel i'm watching. So it was back to the old Hard Disc recorder again. I only use the USB version late at night when i'm in bed and not watching TV at all That's technology for you. Dave

To be honest i'l record some of the late night movies and rewatch them during an evening or just put Prime on. At the moment i've just started watching Game of Thrones after my brother got me the box set 2 yrs ago at Xmas. Have to admit i'm really enjoying it. Only thing i make a point of trying to watch if i can is the F1 but new band rehearses 12-3 on a Sun so i miss quite a few and just have to reccord them. Dave

Yep that annoys me too. Also the adverts are meant to be no more than 4mins long yet channels don't include their own program adverts in that 4 mins and add on at the end giving up to 5-6mins of a gap in a program. If you want to advertise your own programmes then do that instead of the paid adverts you get and let people enjoy the actual program that is on. Its getting to the point every time i flick onto another channel i get adverts more often than not. Adverts are my pet hate in life. 😠 Dave

You have an unusual taste in program likes Stu-khag. Will need to google Man Like Mobeen. Not heard of that one but landfill and sewers just seem like a load of rubbish and crap to me.

I started watching Game of Thrones for the first time. Brother bought me the box set 2 yrs ago for Xmas. Just getting started and have to admit to enjoying it so far. I very rarely watch standard crap telly these days when its on. On rare occassions i record any good programs that might be so Sat night i usually watch something i've recorded or Prime. Dave

My current band all play in other bands (i don't) but it was discussed from the outset that there would only be about one gig a month, on average, with maybe a few extra around Xmas. I'm kinda happy with that. I've never been in it for the money but since retiring and getting a bit older i find that weekends don't mean much nowadays so gigging more wouldn't be a problem and the extra cash would come in handy to buy new gear and satisfy GAS if that's actually possible. So maybe my attitude to playing is turning towards chasing the money Dave

I took your advice few yrs ago Blue when after passing the audition i found out the band were simply asking too much and altho i could have managed as retired early i was in it for enjoyment rather than money. The band were out to make money but they also enjoyed it. They were playing typically 1-2 gigs every weekend either as a T.Rex tribute act or a 70's pop covers band. I liked the idea of it but after learning the first set of 34 70's cover songs in 3 weeks with no rehearsals and doing first few gigs they then told me we had a gig in 10 days and it would be all T.Rex songs and wanted me to learn a further 24 songs in the next 10 days. At the time i mentioned it on here and you suggested if i wasn't in it for the money then maybe i should step down and let someone else in that needs the money. I agreed with what you were saying plus it was a bit too much to learn a second set that soon after the first so all was good. They managed to get someone else who has been with them for past few yrs. I've been asked to dep with them on occasions where bass player can't manage and i'm still great friends with them all including their new bass player. Dave

I quite like that altho i could see it being quite limiting. What you have is really good and easy to listen to but i'm into atmospheric / prog styles. Well done mate. Dave

Not clear whether this is for rehearsals only band or you have intentions to gig at some stage. My current band has singer and guitarist in an Ozzy tribute band and drummer in punk covers band. I'm the only one in one band. Because of their commitments we can't rehearse on a regular weekly basis and over the summer we went a month between rehearsals. These were gigs that were booked from last year and we knew from the outset this would happen. We are now past that stage and block booking rehearsals thru Sept and in monthly advance to guarantee we all make it and have nothing else in the diary. Its a Sunday 12-3 rehearsal with an hour travel each way for furthest away members. WE found that if you try it on a week by week basis other things get in the way as the singer does a lot of charity solo singing events on Sundays as well. He runs this band and altho its all really down to him that he has other bookngs it was his suggestion to block book. If you cancel the rehearsal at short notice you still need to pay for it. That might be the way to go with you guys.

I remembered askng you when you posted pics in another post. I guess that's cheating a bit

Milk on my porridge. No salt. and maybe a spoonful of honey for a change. My Father in Law has porridge every day and always has done and he's 80 and still going strong. And he makes it the old traditional way too. None of that microwave stuff for him

Take advice from your consultant and no-one else as far as the heart condition is concerned. With regards playing and dealing with stress i think others have already mentioned it. If you stress about gigging you need to re-evaluate what your doing. There's a difference between pre-gig nerves and getting stressed about gigging. Can i ask what exactly is it that stresses you about gigging ? Perhaps we as a bass forum can offer some advice on chilling out and reducing pre-gig nerves rather than actual medical advice. At least there's no heart damage which surely is a good thing. Dave

Are you still married. ? If not then do it now. Its never too late to start something new. Don't think i could do that kind of work not just because my readings skills aren't good enough. I just don't think i would enjoy it plus its playing for long hours at a time. Hard work and i'm basically lazy Go on go for it. Life is too short to have regrets like that. Make the most of it while you are fit and able. Dave

My car has a reverse ??? Couldn't resist that one - i'll get me jacket on way out

I don't sight read. I probably could if it was a pretty simple bass line tho but its not what i use it for. My use of music is when learning a song i can either use my ears, bass tab or manuscript to quickly work out the tricky parts. I still have to sit and work out the notes if its anything more than a few notes in a bar. I take that learning from whichever source i can find and i'll write it out myself on A4 paper but instead of dots and lines i'll just write the note and mark the timing as a manuscript does. Basically i do away with the lines on the page and just write the note in place of the dot. That way i've remembered the song in my head and i also remember what i've written down. I may abbreviate a bar or 2 if they are straight 8ths kind of thing like many rock songs or if a song has the same hand pattern but played on different notes i'll write out the first bar and then just put the Root note in each bar. It might sound over complicated for most but it works for me. Been doing this for quite a few years probably more so since TABS appeared on line. The one item i did forget to add was Youtube VID clips. I find them a very useful learning tool. Dave
-
I just think its a useful tool for learning any song. I'm all for making life easier and using whatever tools are available when learning songs. I've seen me using my ear, bass tab and manuscripts when its a tricky song to learn so anything that's available is a useful tool. Dave
