Greatest bassists in rock history... Used Marshall amps?
dmccombe7 replied to dishwallascot's topic in General Discussion
I guess that's why Ampeg 810 cabs were and still are very popular amongst those with roadies or fit enough to lift- 38 replies

Greatest bassists in rock history... Used Marshall amps?
dmccombe7 replied to dishwallascot's topic in General Discussion
Yep had a Marshall amp with one 412 angled cab atop a Hiwatt 412 straight cab back in early 80's. Was using an Aria SB1000 at the time. That was a fantastic tone. Wasn't a lot of choice back in 70's so 2nd hand amps were limited even in early 80's altho every future rock bassist wanted a Marshall stack. It was the done thing. Trendy Dave EDIT :- think my bottom cab might have been a Sound City rather than Hiwatt.- 38 replies

Based on your Avatar pic Spector do the standard Fender styles too like the Coda range one i posted earlier in this thread. Similar Fenderish headstock altho its not shown in the pic i posted. I really do quite fancy one of the deluxe versions. Think i'm talking myself into it. Big birthday coming up soon so who knows

I do however really love this particular bass and would love to try one to see if its better than the one i tried and if it sounds as good as it looks.

Tried one in Bass Direct when i was down looking for a 5 string. Have to say i didn't like it and went for a Dingwall instead. The neck just felt very squarish (plank of wood description just comes to mind) Can't remember what model it was but probably around the £1k to £1.5k. Certainly not top of the range. Shame as they do make some beautiful looking basses. Dave

Best Courier for a high value instrument

£2000 insurance ? I would have thought any WAL would be worth more than that. Are you that far from Wal to drive there yourself ? That way you get to see the service being done hopefully and then try it out before you leave to make sure its all perfect. Make it a few days holiday or something like that if its too far to drive in a day. Dave -
1974 Precision bass - am I paying too much?

Tiny holes behind some of the frets. Is it possible its been refretted at some point. Is it that kind of hole. What do you mean by a depression behind the A. ? Any chance of a close up of the body and neck holes you are talking about ? Dave -

Bass looks ok to me in the photo. If its a genuine American 74P bass i would have thought £1200 wasn't too bad. I'm no expert in them to be fair so i'll be curious to see what comes back on this thread. Like a nice maple neck You can pick up a decent case for not a lot anyways. Dave -
And here's the bass tab too Whitesnake - Fool For Your Loving Bass.pdf

Suggest the revised version in A. Its a little faster but bass line is simpler IMO. I learned the Neil Murray version first and guitarist struggled with it and preferred this version. Lot easier and i can still ad-lib the tricky little bass runs that Neil used. Neil has admitted on BC that many of the runs were ad-libbed at the time and they were not always the same if that helps.

Ach come on guys keep the politics to the political threads and lets just enjoy what festivals are all about. Getting together with friends and like minded half wits getting p****d (or stoned depending on your preferences) and watching some great bands. Hail, rain, snow or sun won't be what you remember in 25yrs time. You'll only remember the great time you had. Dave

I meant to add to this thread that i received mine few weeks ago and it is a fantastic poster. You can either simply pin to your wall as it is much like we used to do when we were all teenagers where your bedroom wall was a shrine to all your idols or you can get it framed either DIY or professionally and it will still look cool no matter how you decide. Great piece showing some historical or iconic basses. Thoroughly pleased with mine. Dave -

Disappointing maybe but certainly not depressing -

I have to say that although i used get well oiled in my early 20's i only ever drank a few beers while playing just once and i made too many minor mistakes i never did it again. I have no regrets about what i did back then as i look at it as an adventure in life where we learn how to cope with various situations. Yes i was offered a few possible options towards fame but i enjoyed my job at the time and it paid better. Its always been a hobby and was always gonna take a back seat to my real job. Of course i could probably have climbed the career ladder a bit earlier but in hindsight i had a great time when i was younger and when i took work more seriously i managed to get to a pretty good management job that paid well enough to retire early. So all in all i really have no regrets except getting rid of some of my bass gear -
