I'm good then and have a long career ahead of me by looks of it. There may be something in that statement. Since finishing work i've allowed my hair to grow long again and the offers and bands are getting more and more too. Longer the hair the more offers i get ............I like it

If you could go back in time to one gig, which one?
dmccombe7 replied to T-Bay's topic in General Discussion
Pink Floyd at Earls Court 1980. Overnight train with a few beers on the way, glorious day in Hyde Park with a few beers then the gig. Astounding performance from Pink Floyd with so many famous musicians supporting or involved with the show. Slept in Euston station and train back home in morning. Oh to be 20 again. Locally it would have been Rush Farewell to Kings tour in Glasgow Apollo Feb 1978. What a show from a band that was only on their 2nd hit album after the success of 2112. Not hugely known in UK at that time but they gave it everything and just seemed to be enjoying themselves so much on stage. Dave -
Gave up bands early 30's restarted at 50 and currently just joined 2 different style bands at almost 58. I seem to have more opportunities now than i did in my 20's. I've been in so many different style bands in the last 7/8 yrs trying to find the one that suits me best and will last the pace. Classic Rock / Metal band and a 70's Glam Rock band in the making so its all go. I want a band that is having fun, get along really well and doing some decent gigs. You did the right thing and all you have to do now is start looking thru the adverts to see what else is out there in your area. With the Rock band we are quite well spread out so we rehearse in the middle area. Drummer is 70 miles, guitarist is 45miles, singer 20miles and myself and 2nd guitarist approx 30miles from where we rehearse but its great fun and i enjoy the songs even tho i've never really been a heavy metal fan its just good fun. The Glam band is still at the talking stage and will be looking to finalise other members end of the month Feb due to other commitments. Never give up. Age is all in the mind. So get out there and have fun Dave.

Playing in Europe - What do I need to know?
dmccombe7 replied to NoRhino's topic in General Discussion
In Europe the bass players is always on the other side of the stage. Most of all have fun, enjoy it and post a few pics with an update on BC. All the best Dave -
Thats scary but had to do 2 gigs in same weekend with a band last year without a rehearsal. 3 weeks after joining. 34 songs to learn in different keys from originals. We had planned to do a few rehearsals but singers dad passed away and we just couldn't manage under the circumstances. Had a few notes on my amp but gigs went really well too. To be fair the songs were all 70's covers and i knew the songs in my head. Trying to remember how the songs went or the structure of the songs was really easy. All i had to do was learn the notes Wouldn't like to do that again tho as it was extremely time consuming learning the songs in 3 weeks and very stressful 2nd gig was far more enjoyable tho after the 1st one went so well. Have to admit that the basses i have with maple necks have a slightly more zingy sound from them. The Rosewood necks are a little more rounded in tone for me. Not all the same type or year of basses right enough but i've always thought maple necks just had a little more edge to them tonally. Dave

The band i'm currently in had an advert running showing VIDS and pics of a full band but said they were lookng for a new bassist. Turns out it was only the original singer and drummer altho they had a new guitarist on board. To be fair they did tell me all this when they contacted me. I managed to find a 2nd guitarist relatively quickly. Great guys and it was the singer that i thought was the main attraction for the band. He gets right into the full image thing too. Dave

never seen that before but like the idea. Dave

You beat me to that.

That's why i retired from work at 55. Work had taken over my life. Constantly being called any time of the day or night. Expected to cancel personal arrangements incl a wedding and a weekend break. Even tried to get me to come back from an annual holiday. I literally had no life of my own. Enough was enough and jumped at chance when they were looking for volunteers. 40yrs service full pension rights and redundancy so no pension penalties. Good enough that even my wife was able to finish her job at 49yrs old. So i'm happy and i now have lots of time to indulge in my hobbies. Currently with 2 bands which i'm finding easier than i thought it would be altho one of them is a Glam Rock covers band and i knew all or most of the songs so that was an easy one to learn the set list. Both bands at start up or rehearsal stages and not gigging as yet but loking forward to it when it starts. And i don't need to go out in the snow...........unless i really want to. Dave

If you're fit and reasonably healthy then there's no reason why you can't or shouldn't play 5 nights a week. Its no different from working the day job in your 60's and many people i know have continued to work after they turned 65. Some kept on in the same job and others retired but were asked back to cover larger shutdown work or even longer term projects on Gas Production plants. It especially helps if you enjoy what you're doing no matter what the job. Dave

15 C and 74% humidity not so good. You could put a dehumidifier in there as 15 C temperature isn't too bad. Its more the higher humidity that's the worry. I think you want to see that down nearer the 50% area to be safe. The instructions i got with my Hygrometer pretty sure it said anything above 60% could cause dampness and mould. You either need to ventilate it in some way or dehumidifier. Just putting a heater in not sure will be the answer Dave

yep afraid so. How you getting on with the new bike then ?
-
Ouch !!! Subtlety might be your strong point there My hobbies are bass, Harleys, Porsche and model trains so i've no chance then. Plus i need to keep the garden nice as dictated by my missus. Dave

All i wanted was the basic readings but i can leave it overnight and get Max and Min during any period but that's a bit overkill. You can see the relation with temperature V humidity. Don't really know all the science behind it but apparently when its cold outside circa 0 C and house is warm typically 20 C the humidity is circa 45-48% RH With same house temperature 20 C but outside temperature comes up to 10 C the humidity in the house increased to circa 48-52% but it does seem to go up and down a fair bit. Maybe an expert on BC can explain the science behind all of this. Dave

Damn i didn't see that one. Too late now. Dave

I bought a Hygrometer from Amazon to check humidity around the house and conservatory more so out of curiosity. Would be worthwhile checking the basement first £8.99 could be well spent. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01H1R0K68/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looks like i should have read the full post. Well done sir. You've made the right decision and pretty sure the new band will have more focus and commitment. Good luck with new project. Dave

Think i'm with most people. The way you describe some of the existing members means you shouldn't be with this band. Either force the hand of the guys you want to stay with or start afresh. Its just not worth all the effort if you aren't enjoying it. Hope it works out for you no matter what happens Dave

Watching with a face like a pair of old tits. That has to be the best description of facial expression i've ever heard. Absolutely brilliant. Dave

How do you know if you're any good?!
dmccombe7 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
From what others have told me over the past few years with different varying style bands. Never really gave much thought to it. I just thought i was OK. Comments were made usually after auditions once i got to know the band a little better and i do tend to ask why a band selected me or why they got in touch with me. Confident with a strong aggressive style that pushes the songs. Reliable and always knows the bass part and song structures. Fluent but punchy bass style. Team player and easy to work with. Able to play any song suggested. The strangest comment was the fact i had good gear. That surprised me as i generally play Fenders and use studio amps and cabs for rehearsals altho i have reliable gear for gigging. Didn't think i was much different from most other bassists. From a personal point of view i like to think i'm reasonably competent and willing to be flexible in song choices depending on the band. I never miss a rehearsal or gig and i always put in 100% to any band i play with. -
Let's hear all your own Basschat Rig Rundowns.
dmccombe7 replied to Painy's topic in General Discussion
Out of curiosity do you use your Rik basses in stereo mode thru both amps. ? That must sound pretty impressive rig. Dave -
Couldn't Get It Right was their bigger hit if i remember right. Great song.
