What you got there ? Dave
-
Too dangerous to my ears. Might take it to rehearsals soon and experiment a bit with it. Dave

That's where i was getting all my info but thought i would ask what others did on BC. What you say is what i was trying out but found at home volumes the power amp volume or Woofer volume is literally just ON and another slight touch is deafening at home so really not a workable set up at home so i need to turn down pre-amp a bit. Still to gig with this amp even tho i've had it for approx 5-6 yrs as a back up amp for my Ampeg SVT (which is in for repair again). Just thought i would experiment with it to see what i can get from it. Its never been out of the house I've also been using my Markbass or Orange rigs over past few years. Dave

I have been mucking about with various volumes, boost and EQ on my GK1001RBii to see if i can get a nice mildly overdriven sound. Having read threads from other forums the amp is capable of achieving that sound using a combination of BOOST and pre and power amp volume settings. I've also been reading threads about how many isolated bass tracks have shown the bass with a slight overdriven sound when it sounds clean in the band mix. ie Rush, Kansas, The Who and even Sting as being some examples but there are so many to choose from. Normally i would be using the following :- Gain : 12:00 Contour : 9:00 Presence : 0 EQ : all 12:00 Boost : 9:00 Woofer : adjusted to whatever is required for either at home or gig volumes (almost OFF at home up to approx 9:00 - 11:00) To that end i was curious as to what settings other owners are running their GK1001RBii at and what style of music are you playing. ? Dave

Gain, power and volume - a confusing ménage à trois...
dmccombe7 replied to alexclaber's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've only just started reading thru this thread today after experimenting with the various settings on my GK1001RBii to achieve overdriven sound and was curious about the comment about the pre-GAIN or Volume being a passive Pot. If i turn up my pre-gain or volume without touching anything else the signal starts to distort before clipping (at home volumes ) which leads me to wonder about being able to turn it up full. I don't quite understand why it distorts based on your comment above. I had always assumed its because the input signal to the pre-amp is being overloaded. ? So i'm assuming that the pre-amp has a tolerance or limit of some kind. Maybe i've misinterpreted what;s being said but i've always been under the impression, like many others, that volume on left is pre-amp input and volume on right is power amp volume too. Based on whats been said i should in theory be able to turn up my pre-gain or LHS volume fully without any distortion appearing and that sound should then be sent as a clean sound to the power amp stage. So how do we manage to get that overdriven sound from the amp. ? Is it just the fact the voltage is now to high for the pre-amp circuit ? I'm not being facetious here at all and only looking for more understanding. Appreciate this is an older thread and i haven't gone thru everyone else's response so far. Dave -
That's some line up will need to check that one out. Cheers Dave

RIP Mr Hiseman. Such a great drummer. Enjoyed his playing with so many great bands i enjoyed years ago, Jack Bruce, Colloseum II, Barbara Thompson, Tempest. From memory he was one of the goto session guys back in 70's. Dave
-
How do you set that up live if you don't mind me asking ? Dave
-
I use the GK1001RBii head and have always kept their overdrive control almost off but might try it running with a bit more grunt. Dave

To be honest i never really picked up on that even after 40 years of playing. We didn't have isolated bass tracks in my day LOL Just listened to a few of my fav bass players from Geddy thru to Gene Simmons. Songs i always thought had a nice clean bass sound also have that warm valve distortion sound when you listen to them as isolated bass. Carry On Wayward Son and Detroit Rock City being good examples for me. Maybe its time i had a little re-think about my live tone. Thanks for posting that. Very interesting topic. Dave

Yep that's the way i work. Listen to song few times and play along to get a feel for it then write out the bass line note for note. Occasionally i write down the song structure before the bass part and by time i've done all that i already know the song enough to gig it. Have you checked out what keys the band play in or was that mentioned on the outset. ? Think you've already nailed this job sir. Good luck and well done in advance of getting it Dave

Not sure if this might help but i downloaded it from somewhere to get a better understanding of chords. If not just download and store for future reference Jeff_Berlin_-_A_Comprehensive_Chord_Tone_System_for_Mastering_the_Bass_1987.pdf

Don't think learning 11 standard songs in a couple of weeks is too difficult for most people. For me its more about why so many for an audition. Surely 3-5 songs is more than enough to judge someone's ability on bass or any instrument for that matter especially if you pick a varied selection of songs that will make the bass part stand out a bit and ensure he is tested rather than just 3-5 plodders with nothing much for the bassist to do. I would have to question the bands ability to be able to judge if they ask me to learn 11 songs for an audition. If i can't impress in 3-5 songs then playing 11 isn't gonna be much better in my opinion. Unless as you've already mentioned you are the drummers. The drummer may have told them you already know and play these songs in another band and it should be a skoosh for you.

If i was auditioning someone for my band it would be based on how well he played the given songs and his ability to blend with the band members rather than how many songs he got thru but missed parts. He needs to nail the parts of the song where the bass is more prominent or recognizable. Quality rather than quantity for me. If he gets 9 out of 11 almost perfect but during that he managed to gel with the band and came across as a nice person that would get along on a personal level then that would be my gut instinct. Sounds like this band are looking for a bass player that comes from a similar background and has already been playing most of the set in their current or recent band set up. Dave

Which bass players play in the upper register like Peter Hook?

Yeah but only for show -
After reading rest of the thread and hearing from guys that know them i would probably change my approach and try and do as many as possible if its the band you've been waiting for. Sounds like they are a serious gigging band so give it your best shot. Dave
-
I've usually done 3-5 songs for an audition. I've also been sent a large list and asked to pick 3-5 from that list. Is that maybe what they are expecting from you ? To ask someone to learn 11 songs for an audition where they might not get the job is asking too much. I've done auditions where i had 3 songs to learn, got the job and was then asked to learn 34 songs in 3 weeks without rehearsals. That was hard going. Did the gigs and then asked to learn another 20 songs in 10 days and decided enough was enough and said i just wasn't able to keep that kind of learning pace going and had to part ways. Still on good terms with them and they have asked me to dep a few times. I think maybe you should check with them about number of songs for the audition itself. Dave

Originally listened to it with just the laptop speakers and it seemed a bit thin. Put headphones on and it came to life with a lot more depth. The layered vocals work a treat. Not sure if its a harmonizer or double tracking kind of thing but sounds good. Liking the bass fills at the end tho. Not really my style of music so i'm no expert i'm afraid but its well done and wish you all the best with it. Dave

The technical end of the neck i think. -
You don't normally need planning permission to install a loft ladder. Unless its a listed house of historic value kind of thing. Loft isn't ideal as gets very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. Are you talking proper loft conversion as a live in space or just to floor it with access ladder mainly as a storage area. ? I was more a fan of the Fish era Marillion altho some of the songs since have been excellent i just can't get into the "new" line up in same way. I buy an album and some tracks are great and others i find a bit tedious so stopped buying their albums. Think those 2 songs might be on the "possibilities" list
-
Just think its maybe a bit risky Paul and many people might take offence at playing it but who knows it might be worth learning one or two and as you say we can ask the crowd before playing them if anyone objects. We coud cheat and say its by the Glitter Band as in effect it was Dave
-
And not forgetting our very own Bay City Rollers of course
-
Sweet, T.Rex, Bowie, Slade, Mud and many others were all exceptional bands. We don't play any Gary Glitter songs for the obvious reasons even tho our drummer was in The Glitter Band (not the original band but the early 90's reincarnation). There's no getting away from the fact he did contribute some good Glam Rock songs. Can't condone or forgive what he has done tho. Dave

What song or songs inspired you to pick up the Bass?
dmccombe7 replied to BobW61's topic in General Discussion
Not sure any particular song made me want to play bass but if it did then it was probably Deep Purple Smoke On The Water or Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Was so long ago now its all a bit vague. Dave
