1. Liked that. Not too over the top and not too far away from the original that its not recognisable. Dave
2. Rickenbacker 4003 in white back in 80's. Bought new, kept it a few mths and found it very limited in tonal variation. Just didn't suit what i was doing and no idea why i even bought it. Quite fancy one now tho jst to say i have one in my wee collection. Dave
3. Possibly its more a visual aspect. Guess you had to be there. The atmosphere at a live gig tends to make you enjoy the gig no matter what they do. (if you're a fan that is) Dave
4. Stunning in all black. I have the Geddy signature bass too (Crafted In Japan) and its a fantastic bass as it is but yours looks very very nice. Can i ask where you got the pickguard ? Dave
5. I've heard some poor solos from Marcus Miller too but i wasn't really picking on individuals but more on the styles. I find a lot of the slap solos extremely boring however in the Marcus clip shown above i actually found that one quite easy to listen to. Usually i don't entertain people who slap without melody. The spanking thing i could accept a very short one or two spanks across the strings as part of a melodic solo but not as shown in the Lee rItenour clip. I just don't find that part of his playing entertaining. I don't even regard it as technically difficult either so not sure why a talented bassist like him would lower himself to that. He's obviously an excellent and talented bassist and pretty sure he could have done something a little better than the spanking section. Its just not for me i'm afraid. I think for me a bass solo needs to have some kind of melody and not just random fast notes. Dave
6. That looks really nice. Does it sound like other carbon fibre basses ie Status or Steinberger
7. I prefer my slim neck Jazz bass as its more enjoyable to play. I use my P/J for more blues based rock as it sounds a little deeper and moodier for that style. I like the Jazz for rock as i feel it cuts thru the mix a bit better. Not sure if more defined is a good description. I guess its just down to what you prefer. There's also the point that in a 3 piece band i find a P bass is more full than a Jazz and carries the song a bit better. This is all subjective and down to each individuals personal preferance. Dave
8.
Its the duty of the young to come up with the originals, and to push music to new places. Its the duty of old guys like me to play covers in a pub band cos thats what I now enjoy. When I was young I was in originals bands, its the way of the world.
I used to think that but have found recently mainly in the Prog scene but also creeping into the heavier rock / southern rock scenes that there are many mature bands leading the way so. Think with age comes a degree of organisation and structure in songs. When we were all younger many of the songs were jam sessions that developed into songs whereas nowadays eople are writing songs at home with their own make shift studios and producing some good quality music. I never say no to an originals band even at my age. Its nice to keep your hand in. Keeps the brain active Dave
9. Thought the Marcus VID was melodic and don't have any issue with that particular slap style. The Lee Ritenour clip i thought the bassist was good up until that spanking the strings section where i thought it was very amatuerish compared to what he was doing throughout the rest of the song. That wasn't entertaining for me i'm afraid. Dave
10. Down on the E A D and up on the G. Usually prefer to pull down on G strings but not on bass
11. Band members pick cover songs and if everyone agrees then its down to whether the singer has the vocals to cope with it. In some cases the singer says yes but struggles during the gig for whatever reason and we would drop that particular song. We would tend to pick the standard classic rock tracks as a starting point. Lot can depend on whether or not the musicians in the band can actually play the song Don't specifically play to get people dancing but more generally standing in front of the band just watching and applauding at the end (hopefully) Classic Rock band at the moment. You do get the occasional headbangers tho. LOL On the originals bands i've played with the singer / guitarist was the main ideas writer and the keys and him would put something together and bass and drums would then add their bit altho in some cases the person with the ideas doesn't like what you i do and i need to come up with a back up plan. Dave
12.
The Jefferson Airplane's *"White Rabbit" came into our set list and I thought it was dated and not a very good idea. I couldn't have been more wrong, people love it, we usually close with it with everyone singing a real crowd pleaser. It's why I stay out of the picking material arena. Blue * Another reason why I don't like to see Blues bands painted with a broad 12 bar shuffle label
Just had a listen to White Rabbit and find it hard to see that go down well especially as a closing song. Afraid its not my cup of tea Blue. Dave
13. Great cab. I have the black version and they are deep sounding cabs. Have to say i paid a fair bit more than this so great price for a great cab. GLWTS Dave
14. Bass solos just for the sake of it is a big NO NO. Different if its someone melodic like Steve Lawson, Steve Williams, Zander Zon, Stewart Clayton, Adam Nitti kind of material where the player is playing something meaningful. The OP clip and the EW&F clips are def not for me at all. Dave
15. Any Rock festival will be charging tickets. Usually they have various packages available ie day tickets, weekend tickets and weekend with accomodation packages. They will be making a significant profit otherwise they wouldn't bother running it. They do mention that their sponsor has let them down and that might have been the original organiser and maybe the holiday park themselves are now trying to put something together at last minute to keep the festival alive. No matter what the reason they should still be paying even a minimum agreed amount as its not a charity gig. Pretty sure some up and coming young unknown rock band looking for some recognition with fee accomodation thrown in might think this is a good opportunity to play and use it as a free rehearsal gig. Saves paying £30 for a 3 hr rehearsal i guess. Think it depends on why you play. This is back to the old "playing for fun and not for money" arguement. Dave
16. Did you give him an opportunity to resolve his issues or go straight to the sacking without him knowing. ? If he was a good drummer and an original member i would have said to him that his timing is starting to fail and he either needs to get it together or we would need to look at another drumer that can commit to the band. Think it very unfair to sack someone without offering them a chance to sort it. I would say that if you haven't given him a chance and just gone behind his back then that is sneaky and not acceptable in my opinion. The one thing you can't do is just put up with it and then sack him. Communication is vital in a band. Dave
17.
Not sure you can get the exact sound of a P bass, but you can get close (imo). Roll off the rear pickup volume all the way, front pickup on full and pluck over the front pickup. Take the tone off about 3/4 of the way. It will still "bark" like a Jazz, but only slightly.
This will be as close as you can get. I have a jazz and a P/J. The jazz pick up just doesn't have the same depth as a precision pick up. I've tried as i love my jazz basses but eventually had to go for the best of both worlds with the P/J to get that low depth of a P bass but still retain the clarity of the J at the back. The new deluxe P/J has a slimmer neck somewhere between a Jazz and a Precision.
18.
Used to do Maid In Heaven in a band I was in a few years back. Always enjoyed playing that one. Sadly I can't harmonise to save my life, otherwise I'd go for this.
Maid In Heaven one of my fav tracks of all time. Fantastic song
19.
Played Ships in the Night on my first ever public gig at the tender age of 17. Happy days
Me too, back in 1977
20. That's one of those door to door delivery companies. Dave
21. Probably the best tribute band i've ever heard and they had so many covers to choose from but i just kinda liked this one a lot. http://youtu.be/kwMAQL9IDus
22.
I think some forget that were all in it for fun. Some of us are in it for fun & money. If your not having fun it's time to move on. Blue
Think you've hit the nail right on the head there Blue. Dave Dave
23.
It's OK man. You're home now.
PMSL brilliant.
24. Couple yrs ago i got sick of all the band hassle and decided to pack it in. Few mths later i got a call from guys that just wanted to get together and play some songs they liked "just for fun." They were all playing in various other bands anyways and not really too bothered about gigging but maybe a special occasion or the odd local festival. Met with them as they sounded like a no hassle easy going bunch of guys. Rehearsed for 6mths and we played guitarists birthday and after that they all decided the band was too good not to gig. All went well for the next few mths while we polished off the set then the guitarist decided it wasn't for him and he wasn't really into it. He was the one that originally contacted me too. My point being that its funny how bands that start off as a bit of fun usually end up wanting to gig. Seen that on quite a few occasions now. Dave
