If you're fit and reasonably healthy then there's no reason why you can't or shouldn't play 5 nights a week. Its no different from working the day job in your 60's and many people i know have continued to work after they turned 65. Some kept on in the same job and others retired but were asked back to cover larger shutdown work or even longer term projects on Gas Production plants. It especially helps if you enjoy what you're doing no matter what the job. Dave

15 C and 74% humidity not so good. You could put a dehumidifier in there as 15 C temperature isn't too bad. Its more the higher humidity that's the worry. I think you want to see that down nearer the 50% area to be safe. The instructions i got with my Hygrometer pretty sure it said anything above 60% could cause dampness and mould. You either need to ventilate it in some way or dehumidifier. Just putting a heater in not sure will be the answer Dave

yep afraid so. How you getting on with the new bike then ?

Ouch !!! Subtlety might be your strong point there My hobbies are bass, Harleys, Porsche and model trains so i've no chance then. Plus i need to keep the garden nice as dictated by my missus. Dave

All i wanted was the basic readings but i can leave it overnight and get Max and Min during any period but that's a bit overkill. You can see the relation with temperature V humidity. Don't really know all the science behind it but apparently when its cold outside circa 0 C and house is warm typically 20 C the humidity is circa 45-48% RH With same house temperature 20 C but outside temperature comes up to 10 C the humidity in the house increased to circa 48-52% but it does seem to go up and down a fair bit. Maybe an expert on BC can explain the science behind all of this. Dave

Damn i didn't see that one. Too late now. Dave

I bought a Hygrometer from Amazon to check humidity around the house and conservatory more so out of curiosity. Would be worthwhile checking the basement first £8.99 could be well spent. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01H1R0K68/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looks like i should have read the full post. Well done sir. You've made the right decision and pretty sure the new band will have more focus and commitment. Good luck with new project. Dave

Think i'm with most people. The way you describe some of the existing members means you shouldn't be with this band. Either force the hand of the guys you want to stay with or start afresh. Its just not worth all the effort if you aren't enjoying it. Hope it works out for you no matter what happens Dave

Watching with a face like a pair of old tits. That has to be the best description of facial expression i've ever heard. Absolutely brilliant. Dave

How do you know if you're any good?!
dmccombe7 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
From what others have told me over the past few years with different varying style bands. Never really gave much thought to it. I just thought i was OK. Comments were made usually after auditions once i got to know the band a little better and i do tend to ask why a band selected me or why they got in touch with me. Confident with a strong aggressive style that pushes the songs. Reliable and always knows the bass part and song structures. Fluent but punchy bass style. Team player and easy to work with. Able to play any song suggested. The strangest comment was the fact i had good gear. That surprised me as i generally play Fenders and use studio amps and cabs for rehearsals altho i have reliable gear for gigging. Didn't think i was much different from most other bassists. From a personal point of view i like to think i'm reasonably competent and willing to be flexible in song choices depending on the band. I never miss a rehearsal or gig and i always put in 100% to any band i play with. -
Let's hear all your own Basschat Rig Rundowns.

Out of curiosity do you use your Rik basses in stereo mode thru both amps. ? That must sound pretty impressive rig. Dave -
Couldn't Get It Right was their bigger hit if i remember right. Great song.

Maybe that's where i've gone wrong Blue
-
I can appreciate that Blue but different circumstances. I've always been worried that if i play every week it will become a chore. Of course that's because i was fitting it in between work commitments up until last year. I'm now in 2 different bands so who knows i could end up gigging every week after all. If the bands are good and i'm enjoying it then why not. Dave

To be fair the band i joined last year were upfront about the fact they were just a group of guys that wanted to get together once a week and play songs they liked rather than a set list for a general pub audience. Funk / Blues based rock band so it was more a social event than a working band. Have to say it was quite relaxed and generally a good laugh and the best part was i learned a lot from these guys who were all older than me and had been playing for well over 40-50 yrs in different bands. Dave

A gig a month is ideal for me as playing is and always has been just a hobby for me. Any more than that starts to feel like a job. My point about playing in other bands was more about the fact they will be limiting who applys for the job. If you are in another band that is gigging fairly regularly then that band would more than likely take preference over this one. Dave

Think it depends on what you're looking for from a band. For a band that its a hobby with circa 5-6 gigs a year i think their demands or caveats are a bit much to ask to be honest. Most musicians i know these days are playing in more than one band. This sounds more like a group of guys that just want to have a nice wee social rehearsal with mates rather than a working band. I have mates that don't respond very well to emails or TXT messages so 3 day limit could be a regarded as being a little tight. Band i was in last year started out like that withe expectations of just a few gigs a year after a while they found themselves wanting to do more. Sadly guitarist left tho. Time for me to then move on. As for doing homework before rehearsals i couldn't agree more. That annoys the hell outa me when others turn up expecting to learn the song on the night. Sadly i've found it quite common. Dave

Missed that bit. If only temporary storage sounds like someone knew they were there. I'd go with the storage company owners. All sounds a bit suspect to me. Dave
-
I'm surprised someone would have such a valuable collection in a storage locker. They really should have been on show at home even hung in a spare rom. You would think that anyone that could afford that many WAL basses had a bit of money behind them and lived in a reasonable sized house. Hope they get returned in good order. Guy must be devastated. That must have been a life's work collection there. Dave

Thanks Pete looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Dave

Do you use the active circuit when playing. Will be good to get a review of how it sounds with standard bass tones. I have a Jazz bass and a P/J deluxe active and trying to understand the amp better its best to know if you are using the EQ on the basses to offset EQ on the amp. Hopefuly that makes some sort of sense. Dave

Let me know what bass you use when gigging the Mesa if that's OK. Just curious. Dave
