1.
My rule of thumb is to buy an amp that sounds "right" when all the controls are at 12 o'clock. As long as slight adjustments, 1 click to the left or right, covers it then the amp is right for me. Any extreme EQing means I bought the wrong amp. So my answer to the OP is 12 o'clock.
Think that's probably about right for me when using my GK 1001 Head & Berg HT322 cab. When using other variations i find i need to use more EQ to get what i want. Ampeg head with Orange cabs i need to cut the higher mids slightly and boost the low mids a touch. Its the weirdest setting i've ever had to find. Dave
2. Think its more right place right time and open to trying anything. Thanks tho Dave
3.
Approached to join another band ? Very nice Good luck !
I've had that a few times as i'm on Bandmix and get people calling or txt messages. Think my current band was same. Came out of the blue. I'm not claiming to be that good but maybe just a lack of bassists in our area ? Wasn't always like that. I used to have to chase auditions. Only failed one tho for a celtic rock band. When i went in for the audition and before i even set up the female singer and female fiddle player in the band both said to me that the guy in before me was perfect for the job. Kind of put a damper on it and didn't realy give it my best shot after that. Didn't get it but they contacted me a year later and asked if i was still interested. You can guess what my answer was. Dave
4. Its more a given at the audition. Probably more to do with how we gel as a band kind of thing. I know the band and they know my background. Stargazer Smoke on Water Ace of Spades Enter Sandman Fool for your Loving (Mendosa slightly faster rockier version) Kill the King. Motorhead song i'm not so sure its a good song to do but easy to play altho i'm a fingerstyle bassist rather than pick. The band are reforming after a year off due to illness. They are looking to change their set to suit me and another guitarist so room for scope i think. Dave
5. Not heard of Fugazi ??? Might be an age thing tho.
6. After rehearsing for nearly a year (various drummer changes) the guitarist in the band decides his heart isn't in it anymore and has left. Too far for me to travel along country roads (1hr 15mins each way) to start again with a new guitarist as the style of music wasn't really what i've always played but it was enjoyable. That said i was approached the other day about auditioning for another heavy rock band which is more my thing. They've played various biker rallies and a few good gigs in various other venues so looks promising. 6 songs to learn for the audition in a couple of weeks including Stargazer by Rainbow. Whoo Hoo One door closes - another opens as they say. Dave
7.
I spoke with Pete on the phone, Hes on Facebook Mick if you want to message him, im sure he would appreciate it.
If you can pass on all our best wishes and hope he returns to BC for some constructive debate it would be appreciated by many i would think. Dave
8.
I think it's VERY expensive to import from the US now. I wanted to buy a Saodwsky hard case from N.Y, it was calculated by size rather than weight, and with tax and fees was going to cost me about $650.
OUCH !!! Just get a custom case made in UK circa £200
9. Not sure i've picked up your reasons for changing but is the weight of the Mesa too heavy. You mention you are looking for a 1x12 one handed lift at 300W. I wouldn't have thought a 1x12 that heavy but i'm used to larger cabs. I've used the Berg AE112 cabs which are NEO speakers. Very lightweight and nice tone. I've also got the Markbass rig which is lightweight but i only use it on occassions where there are a lot of stairs to climb or long distances from car. The only thing i would say and its down to personal taste is that the lightweight speakers don't seem to have the same depth of tone for me. Its difficult to pinpoint exactly why that is and i've tried them with various different amps. They just seem to lack something. Maybe its down to them being too clean in comparison to my heavier cabs. Dialling the tweeter or horns down altogether does help tho. Its never been an issue out front and audience always seem to like the Markbass tone so maybe its just where i stand on stage that i don't hear. Think you should def try before you buy tho. Dave
10.
Do what I did - get a cheap squire PJ. Modding your 70's P bass is something not to be done lightly. It's irreversible if it doesn't work out. Here's the thread where I asked a similar question: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
+1 I'm with NJE on this. Its too good a bass to start cutting into. Think it would devalue your P bass. I have a Jazz and went for a Fender deluxe PJ and its a great bass and has a good variety of tones but you don't get a true Jazz sound from it because it lacks the neck J pick up. You do get the P sound from it and can add a little more bite to the P sound but generally speaking i tend to run it mid-point and have both on equal split. Going for a cheaper PJ would be the better option and if its not for you it would be easy to move on. Dave
11. WOT - Out of curiosity would you get the finish on the back redone or leave as is. Love the look of the bass. If i was buying a P bass that would be the one for me too. Sounds fantastic. Dave
12. Maybe Mark could offer some clarification if he's still on BC. I know he used to reply to some posts. Pretty sure he has genuine reasons for moving to other cab manufacturers. Profit ? Value for Money ? Supply of products ? Exchange rates ? Could be a number of things. Dave
13. Are they pricing themselves out of the market ? Vanderkley seem to have become the popular choice from Bass Direct. I've had 2 AE112 cabs and altho they were fantastic cabs they just didn't give me the sound i was looking for. I also managed to get the HT322 cab and it was by far the best cab i've ever played thru for any style of music. I think that's because i prefer normal solid, heavy speakers in my cabs. Yes it is heavy but no more than any standard 6x10 cab i've lifted. The big difference is they are so well built. The quality of materials is 2nd to none. I have an Orange rig but its nowhere near as well built as the Berg HT322. Dave
14.
we do Pistols and Clash covers in our set, the Pistols stuff nearly always goes down best with the general public. The Clash songs that go well are London Calling and Should I stay, hardly punk and both used in adverts Getting back to the OP, overrated by who, the public, personnel opinion or the Media? most of the answers on here seem to be personnel opinion
Wasn't meant as a criticism of The Clash in any way. I just remember them being classed as part of the Punk era in the media. Many fans were happy that they were classed as a punk band rather than a Rock band. Had they appeared a few years earlier or even later they may well have been classed more as a rock band. As i said i enjoyed the singles whenever i heard them and would agree London Calling was a classic song worthy of many bands. Dave .
15. I quite liked the Sex Pistols to be honest. Clash were ok. Wouldn't have bought any of their music but enjoyed the occasional song when i heard it. Did punk music not take over from rock music as the new cult craze back in 70's. Classic or Glam rock were very popular early 70's then Punk around 76 i think. Boy bands or your typical pop crap was always there and still there to this day as manicured drivel written and produced by others and managed by likes of Stock Aitken & Waterman in earlier days to Simon Cowells of the music business. They take a mediocre and sometimes talentless act and change them to look and sound better for the media. In some cases if they have the image they will be managed by them. Who needs the talent Dave
16.
Weather Report. Everyone loves Jaco, but as far as I,m concerned it just bores me shitless. How many notes can you play, and how fast? (yawn)
Think there was an era where the Jaco style was very popular and not just with musicians. Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Colloseum II and even Greenslade all very jazz based music in my opinion. They produced a lot of very talented musicians over the years that went on to successful careers in other bands. Personally i liked a lot of the material from that era at the time but find it a tad boring to listen to these days. I mainly listened to pick up tips and techniques used by the various bassists. Think its an age thing. Dave
17. Would never post a bass or a heavy amp or cab let alone sending abroad. No disrespect to the newbie but no history ?? I'd be very wary of that kind of transaction anwhere. If you can't get details on them its risky. Dave
18.
Ah, thanks Dave. Much appreciated. TBH, I haven't used the R-400 with anything other than my TKS, so I can't really comment. FWIW, my S212 and S112 don't have a distinctive 'TKS' tone IMO. They just sound like classic bass cabs...
Maybe that's why they are so popular. Too many modern cabs sound a bit thin to me. I'm currently using a Berg HT322 that i bought from fellow BC'er Karlfer few yrs back now. Its bloomin heavy but just sounds fantastic at any volume. Also have an Orange rig which sounds good but again heavy. Dave
19. Only just caught up on this thread altho i read the initial post at the time. WOT :- i would have to say your way of demo'ing the amp is perfect for me. I like the way you keep the bass relatively simple throughout that allows me to identify the subtle changes in amp settings. I would hope you continue to demo gear in similar fashion. I don't want to see a demo of how great a bassist thinks he is. Its more about what the amp can do for a traditional style of playing or a particular song style. Excellent reviews and i am quite interested in one of the R400 versions. I found the all tube version had a nice tube tone but not as much variation from the EQ. I find that with most of the all-tube amps. I prefer the hybrid tube with SS back end for reliability. Altho its a year after you last posted on this i was wondering how much of the tone is the amp and how much from the TKS cab. I've not used a TKS cab but they do appear very popular recently. Dave
20. Nice bass. You'll need to change your signature pic if you sell that one. GLWTS Dave
21. Bass Whisperer clips are usually where i head first as he uses varying techniques to demonstrate and even came across him doing Steve Harris bass review where he admitted not his kind of music but he learned the riffs of songs and then demonstrated other techniques that are equally good on Harris P bass. Uses the same Genz gear for every bass review i think so you can hear the differences between the basses to a certain degree. He runs the amps flat too. I'm not a slapper myself altho some mates might disagree with that statement I don't mind the occasional bit of slap but not the repetative "look how many slaps i can do in 1min" style. It needs to have something else maybe a groove or a feel of some kind to make me sit up and listen or grab my attention. Otherwise its just boring noise. Dave
22. According to his members section he last posted Jul 2016 but i don't know him personally i'm afraid. Hope all is ok Dave
23. Thought this rig would have been snapped up long ago. Hopefully soon mate Dave
24.
I got the pass!!!! so will be coming along !! bringing my Status Kingbass and new 210 vanderkay if anyone has any old under £100 basses lying around and want a quick buck then please come and see me as I'm trying to get some together for my students . See you Saturday Also bringing my EBS Filter pedal to sale
Shame its too far for me as i have a couple of cheaper basses i could have sold you. Epi Thunderbird and a Peavey Cirus Tiger Eye 5 string. Epi only worth about £100 and the Peavey probably not much more so it would be good for students to get use of them. The Peavey was new and never been out the house too. Dave
