1. Sad news RIP Gregg Joined a band end last year and was the first time i had really heard his music. Loved it. I'm No Angel being my fav album Dave
2. http://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/musicman-usa-sub-bass-very-rare-ebony-fretless-drop-dead-gorgeous.-stingray/1238068320 What about this on Gumtree
3. Heavy Rock inspired me to start playing. Rush, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Deep Purple & Alice Cooper being the main ones. Soon after i came into my Prog era and then Jazz Rock. Since then i've moved thru all styles and back to one i never really gave much thought to and now Blues based Rock. Dave
4.
never one to question the master but..my Ampeg 410 HLF doesn't struggle with mt SVT-CL (I had a Warwick 410 that did)
I considered the Ampeg 410 to match my SVT4 Pro head and after a lot of research i thought the HLF was the cab to go for if its Ampeg. Have you considered the Ornage 410. I bought the Orange OBC115 and was fair impressed and the 410 gets good reviews too. I did try a Markbass 410 in Guitar Guitar and it was mighty impressive and lightweight too. From my little experience in 410 trials in various studios and shops and listening to friends who have the Ampeg 410HLF i would say go with the 410HLF cab as its got a nice mid range sound but still produces a lot of low down depth. A lot of 410 cabs i've tried had a nice clean mid to hi end but they lacked that low depth or bass end that for me fills a room. That's not to everyone's taste and depends on what style of music you are playing. I reckon you should try somewhere before buying whether in shops or friends who might have the cabs. I've no idea what a barefaced sounds like. I don't see a lot of them up here. As you can see from my signature i have a variety of cabs. Markbass for easy handling, Orange for depth and lower end and Bergantino just does it all very clearly but is a very heavy cab to humph around. Horses for courses as they say but def try before you buy. Dave
5. My Warwick Thumb NT since 1989. Doesn't get gigged much so its in great condition. The nicest bass i have for playability but it is a bit heavy. Dave
6.
You guys still have hippies? Blue
Yep that would be me to a degree. Jeans and T shirts since 70's. Style never goes out of fashion. Hair a bit shorter from waist length its now shoulder length and white Dave
7. I don't use a pick as such but use my thumb in same style as if i was holding a pick even to point my index finger sits against mt thumb end. Because i started doing this while preferring fingerstyle i never bothered moving my bass. I have more or less had my bass at same position for 40yrs. It sits approx with neck just above my belt line or waistband depending on your preference. I've tried playing it higher but never lower and always seemed more comfortable where i've always played it. Is it possible its more a fashion thing that you've seen many bassist play it lower and that's how it should be done. Phil Lynott played his bass higher than most with a pick. Other bassists that use both tend to have their bass at mid-point - John Wetton, Nick Beggs i believe is same and there will be a few others. Try and find a happy medium and you should get used to it. Dave
8.
I understand that more modern Tube trains (92 onwards) whilst using a 630v DC traction supply have inverters onboard as they have AC motors.
Sorry but i have to ask how you know that Train and bass geekiness methinks. Dave
9. Technically good but no tune or feel from it. Just fast playing. That's ok to show off in music shop when trying a bass out (well to be honest it bores me a bit when i hear it in shops) I would rather hear a nice flowing bass line to a rapid fire as many notes in a minute bass line. Afraid i've never really got the Mark King thing to be honest. Prefer Allain Caron. I guess i'm old school too. Dave
10. Brilliant. Great idea. Wish i was there for a slice of that. As i wasn't invited can you just send the real MM to me at my usual address Happy belated birthday Dave
11. Ouch. Thought maybe you had taken a tumble with the bass while playing. At least its only a string that's badly damaged. The bass has just gained some character Dave
12. Hope you're ok. What happened with the tumble ? Dave
13.
Doesn't bother me. I'm a basstard.
Brilliant
14.
You're not a singist, are you?
Hell No i'm not that stupid looking Dave
15.
I'd never use the term to offend anyone. I'd never dream of using it to refer to someone whom has a condition or difficulty. I use the term guitard only to refer to those whom are not musically gifted & not willing to learn either. Those that just make a noise & noodle constant piffle. I'm still looking for a phrase to use to describe those baw heedit numpties who turn up for singer auditions & don't know a thing about music or able to hold a decent tune! They rip ma nitting oot!!!
I take offence to "baw heedit numpty". Nice one Dave
16. We all get called names at some point in our life and it makes us who we are. You either take offence with it and suffer or you just laugh it off and get on with living your life. I personally have never seen the need to use the term but its more an age thing for me. Its just not my normal type of vocabulary. Retard is used in many walks of life ie ignition systems can be retarded. It simply means delayed or held back in terms of progression. (not my words - that's the definition) I just accept it as humour and take no offence as its an indirect term rather than specific slander of a named person. Dave
17. Done. Repetative clips so hope its all good for you. Dave
18.
The Fender guide is concise and straightforward https://support.fend...uitar-properly-
I use this. Also Warwick have a very similar guide. Just google either Fender or Warwaick bass guitar set up instructions.
19. Its just a bit of fun. Why make more out of it. It will be a sad world if we continue on this path of PC. People will get to point they won't join in forums like BC in fear of the PC Police Dave
20. John Paul Jones did some Mandolin playing that was nice but that's round the wrong way i guess. He was however multi instrumentalist. Dave
21.
Scott Gorham played bass on this lovely track...
Wow not heard that song before. Nice one. Dave
22. Leave my bass on stage to settle at room temperature. Will check tuning either 5mins before due to start the gig or as soon as i put my bass on. After that its only if i think it sounds out of tune which is rare or if there is a quiet point where no bass i might just check. I have a rackmount Korg and its always on so easy to check tuning at any time. If room conditions change dramatically mid-set i will probably re-check it. Dave
23. Anytime i've used someone else's gear i leave it as it is. Wouldn't dream of disconnecting cabs etc. Any decent bassist should be able to get a reasonable sound from any good quality gear and i'm assuming its DI'd to PA so the PA is doing the work anyway. Only thing i adjust if need be is the volume on stage. My bass or my Roland GT-6B mfx gives me what i want. As long as i can hear my bass on stage the sound engineer will look after the tone out front to suit the rest of the band and the venue. Historically its always been my gear used anyway and i only let bassists i know that are careful with their own gear use it. To be fair to them they do same as me and only tend to use volume control and their own bass. Sounds like a bad set up on stage where guys are swapping another bassists cabs around. Dave
24.
In case you or he are tempted to open it up and take a look, don't. Valve amps often run on very high internal voltages (4-500v not uncommon) and worse, they're DC, so if you touch the wrong thing, you're likely to meet the man in the sky with the big white beard.
Ouch but this is a good point. Don't mess with these. If its not an obvious internal fuse then take to a repair shop. Dave
25. This was the first time i had really heard her and thought she was an amazing singer. Unusual song for Steve Hackett but works well together. Great album IMO http://youtu.be/OUkNM9HNFpc
