I had a PA hire with a band called Galliano (keyboard player was ex-Style Council) back in 80's and their bass player was held up altho his gear was set up by the stage crew. We needed to complete a quick sound check of the band and they asked if i could do his sound check. It was a standard Fender bass but the action was so high it has stuck in my mind ever since. Must have been around 5mm on E string. The band were all pretty seasoned musicians too. When the bassist finally arrived i mentioned it to him and he said he liked it that way to do slap bass which seemed to be his favoured technique. All in all they were an amazing band, exceptional musicians. I couldn't have gigged with his bass with an action that high. Currently my Jazz is 2mm on E. My P/J is slightly higher at 2.5mm. I do feel the difference when switching between them. The Jazz has been tweaked over the years to get to that point whereas the PJ i only bought this year and still working on it to get it just right. Dave Dave

I'm not usually a fan of all out slap but i found this reasonably entertaining. Not the best playing but a nice wee bass duel. What i did like was the 4 string V 6 string solo. About 4 or 5 mins is all i could probably listen to before getting bored tho. Dave

I tend to look at Bandmix first and regularly see the same bands advert on JMB or even Gumtree. To me that shows they are taking it a little more seriously. Bandmix has a fee if you want to contact someone tho. Beware the auto renewal function that is ticked automatically. I recently paid the monthly charge to contact a band i was interested in and the following month they deducted another monthly fee. When i queried it they said it was auto renewal and i needed to go to my settings to un-tick the box. To be fair they refunded the charge. Think you just have to keep at it with any site to get the band you are looking for. I've had same lack of response from all the sites over the years. If anyone contacts me i always reply even if its to say i'm now with a band or i don't have the time available to help. A little courtesy and common decency goes a long way in my book but i'm afraid it's not the norm on any of the sites. Keep at it and eventually someone will either get in touch with you or you'll find the right band. Dave

I'll occasionally look to see who's on and if anyone interesting i'll record it so i can jump oast all the other crap. The show is usually a waste of TV space. Jools has lost the plot with some of the material he puts on the show. There are far more well known and popular genres of music out there that don't get TV time. Why not put on some modern rock or Prog bands for a change. Doesn't need to be every band just an occasional one.

Mines are perfect mate. Tested every 2 yrs. I've just never associated any Carbon fibre bass as woody or organic. That's why i was asking. When i think of Carbon basses i think clean but warm tone with no distinct edge to it that would stand out in a mix. (Status and Steinberger) On the other hand the Vigier has a sharpness to it that i find quite different to other carbon basses. Woody and Organic just doesn't sound right to me.

I've only heard good things about the new range of Fender amps. Need to try one out i think. Dave

Rickenbacker 4003 in white back in 80's. Bought new, kept it a few mths and found it very limited in tonal variation. Just didn't suit what i was doing and no idea why i even bought it. Quite fancy one now tho jst to say i have one in my wee collection. Dave

Possibly its more a visual aspect. Guess you had to be there. The atmosphere at a live gig tends to make you enjoy the gig no matter what they do. (if you're a fan that is) Dave

I've heard some poor solos from Marcus Miller too but i wasn't really picking on individuals but more on the styles. I find a lot of the slap solos extremely boring however in the Marcus clip shown above i actually found that one quite easy to listen to. Usually i don't entertain people who slap without melody. The spanking thing i could accept a very short one or two spanks across the strings as part of a melodic solo but not as shown in the Lee rItenour clip. I just don't find that part of his playing entertaining. I don't even regard it as technically difficult either so not sure why a talented bassist like him would lower himself to that. He's obviously an excellent and talented bassist and pretty sure he could have done something a little better than the spanking section. Its just not for me i'm afraid. I think for me a bass solo needs to have some kind of melody and not just random fast notes. Dave

I prefer my slim neck Jazz bass as its more enjoyable to play. I use my P/J for more blues based rock as it sounds a little deeper and moodier for that style. I like the Jazz for rock as i feel it cuts thru the mix a bit better. Not sure if more defined is a good description. I guess its just down to what you prefer. There's also the point that in a 3 piece band i find a P bass is more full than a Jazz and carries the song a bit better. This is all subjective and down to each individuals personal preferance. [/quote] I used to think that but have found recently mainly in the Prog scene but also creeping into the heavier rock / southern rock scenes that there are many mature bands leading the way so. Think with age comes a degree of organisation and structure in songs. When we were all younger many of the songs were jam sessions that developed into songs whereas nowadays eople are writing songs at home with their own make shift studios and producing some good quality music. I never say no to an originals band even at my age. Its nice to keep your hand in. Keeps the brain active Dave

Thought the Marcus VID was melodic and don't have any issue with that particular slap style. The Lee Ritenour clip i thought the bassist was good up until that spanking the strings section where i thought it was very amatuerish compared to what he was doing throughout the rest of the song. That wasn't entertaining for me i'm afraid. Dave

Down on the E A D and up on the G. Usually prefer to pull down on G strings but not on bass

Band members pick cover songs and if everyone agrees then its down to whether the singer has the vocals to cope with it. In some cases the singer says yes but struggles during the gig for whatever reason and we would drop that particular song. We would tend to pick the standard classic rock tracks as a starting point. Lot can depend on whether or not the musicians in the band can actually play the song Don't specifically play to get people dancing but more generally standing in front of the band just watching and applauding at the end (hopefully) Classic Rock band at the moment. You do get the occasional headbangers tho. LOL On the originals bands i've played with the singer / guitarist was the main ideas writer and the keys and him would put something together and bass and drums would then add their bit altho in some cases the person with the ideas doesn't like what you i do and i need to come up with a back up plan.
