Maybe Mark could offer some clarification if he's still on BC. I know he used to reply to some posts. Pretty sure he has genuine reasons for moving to other cab manufacturers. Profit ? Value for Money ? Supply of products ? Exchange rates ? Could be a number of things. Dave

Are they pricing themselves out of the market ? Vanderkley seem to have become the popular choice from Bass Direct. I've had 2 AE112 cabs and altho they were fantastic cabs they just didn't give me the sound i was looking for. I also managed to get the HT322 cab and it was by far the best cab i've ever played thru for any style of music. I think that's because i prefer normal solid, heavy speakers in my cabs. Yes it is heavy but no more than any standard 6x10 cab i've lifted. The big difference is they are so well built. The quality of materials is 2nd to none. I have an Orange rig but its nowhere near as well built as the Berg HT322. Dave
we do Pistols and Clash covers in our set, the Pistols stuff nearly always goes down best with the general public. The Clash songs that go well are London Calling and Should I stay, hardly punk and both used in adverts Getting back to the OP, overrated by who, the public, personnel opinion or the Media? most of the answers on here seem to be personnel opinion
Wasn't meant as a criticism of The Clash in any way. I just remember them being classed as part of the Punk era in the media. Many fans were happy that they were classed as a punk band rather than a Rock band. Had they appeared a few years earlier or even later they may well have been classed more as a rock band. As i said i enjoyed the singles whenever i heard them and would agree London Calling was a classic song worthy of many bands. Dave .

I quite liked the Sex Pistols to be honest. Clash were ok. Wouldn't have bought any of their music but enjoyed the occasional song when i heard it. Did punk music not take over from rock music as the new cult craze back in 70's. Classic or Glam rock were very popular early 70's then Punk around 76 i think. Boy bands or your typical pop crap was always there and still there to this day as manicured drivel written and produced by others and managed by likes of Stock Aitken & Waterman in earlier days to Simon Cowells of the music business. They take a mediocre and sometimes talentless act and change them to look and sound better for the media. In some cases if they have the image they will be managed by them. Who needs the talent Dave
Weather Report. Everyone loves Jaco, but as far as I,m concerned it just bores me shitless. How many notes can you play, and how fast? (yawn)
Think there was an era where the Jaco style was very popular and not just with musicians. Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Colloseum II and even Greenslade all very jazz based music in my opinion. They produced a lot of very talented musicians over the years that went on to successful careers in other bands. Personally i liked a lot of the material from that era at the time but find it a tad boring to listen to these days. I mainly listened to pick up tips and techniques used by the various bassists. Think its an age thing. Dave

Advice on trading to a newbie in a foreign country.
dmccombe7 replied to edstraker123's topic in General Discussion
Would never post a bass or a heavy amp or cab let alone sending abroad. No disrespect to the newbie but no history ?? I'd be very wary of that kind of transaction anwhere. If you can't get details on them its risky. Dave -
WoT's video review! Handbox R-400 bass amplifier
dmccombe7 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ah, thanks Dave. Much appreciated. TBH, I haven't used the R-400 with anything other than my TKS, so I can't really comment. FWIW, my S212 and S112 don't have a distinctive 'TKS' tone IMO. They just sound like classic bass cabs...
Maybe that's why they are so popular. Too many modern cabs sound a bit thin to me. I'm currently using a Berg HT322 that i bought from fellow BC'er Karlfer few yrs back now. Its bloomin heavy but just sounds fantastic at any volume. Also have an Orange rig which sounds good but again heavy. Dave -
WoT's video review! Handbox R-400 bass amplifier
dmccombe7 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Amps and Cabs
Only just caught up on this thread altho i read the initial post at the time. WOT :- i would have to say your way of demo'ing the amp is perfect for me. I like the way you keep the bass relatively simple throughout that allows me to identify the subtle changes in amp settings. I would hope you continue to demo gear in similar fashion. I don't want to see a demo of how great a bassist thinks he is. Its more about what the amp can do for a traditional style of playing or a particular song style. Excellent reviews and i am quite interested in one of the R400 versions. I found the all tube version had a nice tube tone but not as much variation from the EQ. I find that with most of the all-tube amps. I prefer the hybrid tube with SS back end for reliability. Altho its a year after you last posted on this i was wondering how much of the tone is the amp and how much from the TKS cab. I've not used a TKS cab but they do appear very popular recently. Dave -

Bass Whisperer clips are usually where i head first as he uses varying techniques to demonstrate and even came across him doing Steve Harris bass review where he admitted not his kind of music but he learned the riffs of songs and then demonstrated other techniques that are equally good on Harris P bass. Uses the same Genz gear for every bass review i think so you can hear the differences between the basses to a certain degree. He runs the amps flat too. I'm not a slapper myself altho some mates might disagree with that statement I don't mind the occasional bit of slap but not the repetative "look how many slaps i can do in 1min" style. It needs to have something else maybe a groove or a feel of some kind to make me sit up and listen or grab my attention. Otherwise its just boring noise. Dave

According to his members section he last posted Jul 2016 but i don't know him personally i'm afraid. Hope all is ok Dave

dmccombe7 replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in Events
I got the pass!!!! so will be coming along !! bringing my Status Kingbass and new 210 vanderkay if anyone has any old under £100 basses lying around and want a quick buck then please come and see me as I'm trying to get some together for my students . See you Saturday Also bringing my EBS Filter pedal to sale
Shame its too far for me as i have a couple of cheaper basses i could have sold you. Epi Thunderbird and a Peavey Cirus Tiger Eye 5 string. Epi only worth about £100 and the Peavey probably not much more so it would be good for students to get use of them. The Peavey was new and never been out the house too. Dave -
Quick bit of news on Workshops... With a bit of help from Gary, a.k.a. cetera, I'm really pleased to say that Davey Rimmer (bassist for Uriah Heep) has stepped up and will give a 45 minute presentation on his career, gear choices, life on the road, Uriah Heep, Trevor Bolder etc and - if we ask him nicely - will maybe demonstrate a few tunes.... Thanks Gary and Davey - absolutely brilliant!
I hope someone records this session. Big Uriah Heep fan especially Gary Thain era but Trevor Bolder was 1st class too. Pity i'm a little too far away. Saw Steve Lawson at the Moffat Bass Bash few yrs ago and i've attached the recording i made. Really nice fretless material. Hope you enjoy him as much as i did. Quite funny guy too with good sense of humour. http://youtu.be/AWbGNbvg9bQ Dave -
Best in rubbish band or worst in great band?
dmccombe7 replied to T-Bay's topic in General Discussion
For me i prefer to be in a band with equal abilities that push each other to do better. If i was the worst player i would always be on the back foot and feel inferior. I certainly would learn more but at what cost ? If i was the best player i would feel i was wasting my time and wouldn't be able to play the songs i wanted. Would find it very limiting from a techical point of view. Think you need to find a balance between technical abilities and personalities to enjoy it in my opinion. That view would be different for those that are more serious about playing. I play to enjoy as a hobby rather than as a job so might have a different outlook on it. Dave -
As my post above, my wife was sent a letter of an intended claim in court before the IC settled on her behalf. So in the case of my wife/Duo, it was worth having the Insurance. It all got quite complicated, because the claim was against my wife's duo. club owner and the agent. Not sure why the agent, he had nothing to do with it, other than supply the act. The club owner was another matter, believe it or not, he had no PLI, so I am not sure what went on there (or that outcome) because the claims company decided he was liable as well, unless that was just some kind of threat in an attempt to get more money ? My PL insurance is through the MU. I don't know if it's any good because I have never needed to use it. https://www.musician...ility-Insurance
So how much is it to join the MU. Couldn't see it on the attached link. Doesn't seem to be many actual cases of claims so far but i like the idea of some sort of security. There are some sneaky gits out there that wouldn't think twice about suing a band. Dave

I have the Orange OBC 115 & 210 cabs and using with my Ampeg SVT 4 Pro. Nice warm sound. I've considered the AD200b after trying a mates thru a 8x10 Hartke cab and it was full, warm and loud. It had a presence that my Ampeg or GK amps just don't have. Price put me off as i reckon you wouldn't notice the difference once a full band is playing and i would be thru a PA most times anyway. I did look at the other Orange amps but didn't see the point if i already have the Ampeg and GK1001rbii heads. I would like to see a head to head with the AD200b and the OB1-500 heads thru same cab. And to find out if they both sound full and warm in a band set up rather than just hearing the bass in a room on its own. Dave
-
I start from everything being at "0" on both bass and amp. I'll tweak the amp for the location and from there i'll use my bass depending on acoustics of the room when audience arrives or how the band is changing sound during a set. I like to have some degree of control on the bass as its a little easier to tweak the bass than walk back to the amp. Jings how lazy does that sound Dave
-
What amp are you using. ? Have you considered a twin channel amp altho that would still require a footswitch to change over channels. Amps with a switchable graphic might be an option. Pedal is far cheaper tho. Dave
I was going to turn up and suggest the 1001-II. Best amp I've ever owned by a country mile.
Using GK 1001 head with my Berg HT322 and it certainly covers all basses for me. Other smaller lightweight amps i have or used and liked GK MB series, Markbass heads and one i wish i had kept is the Genz Benz Streamliner 600 tube pre-amp. Really nice wee amp head. Dave
-
Does your GK amp not have a headphone that you could using that instead of the TC output. That way you should be getting the sound you hear on stage other than the speaker cab difference. Is the TC delay a proper headphone output ? EDIT :- just checked my 1001 head and no headphone socket. It was my GK MB200 that has headphone socket. Sorry that idea is out the window. Dave
It is a very odd way to describe them. I get a bit thrown by the idea that the sound of the bridge/back pickup is a bit more 'forward' in the mix, so the names really don't match up in any way for me. As we can all agree which parts of the bass are the front and the back, perhaps we should call them the 'left' and 'right' pickups. That might clear it up!
Is that the right hand pick up if looking down when wearing the bass or when looking at the bass from the front. Its all so confusing you know. Dave
