It is a very odd way to describe them. I get a bit thrown by the idea that the sound of the bridge/back pickup is a bit more 'forward' in the mix, so the names really don't match up in any way for me. As we can all agree which parts of the bass are the front and the back, perhaps we should call them the 'left' and 'right' pickups. That might clear it up!
Is that the right hand pick up if looking down when wearing the bass or when looking at the bass from the front. Its all so confusing you know. Dave

Quite a few surprises in this thread. Don't get the Kiss one tho. ? They've a huge fan base and they do put on a massive theatrical show. Maybe not the greatest musicians in the world and they have gone a bit pop but in their heyday they were pretty much top of their game. Afraid i am a Kiss fan at heart mainly their older stuff but I've never actually seen them live. Just goes to show how everyone's taste in music is so different. On the Jaco thing i can appreciate his talent but even as a bassist i couldn't listen to a full album of the stuff. Maybe in late 70's early 80's i might have just to perfect my own bass skills but not now. The Beatles one did confuse me a little too considering how many famous hit records they've had. Think if you lived in the heyday of some of the bands mentioned in the thread you may have had a different perspective off them but many of the younger bassists just don't get the older bands much the same as many of the older bassists (me included) don't get some of the modern bands. Life is a funny old thing Still it's made for an interesting thread. Dave
I was born in 1960, but spent most of the decade interested in Lego, Meccano and model aeroplanes and tanks rather than pop music. In fact I wasn't really interested in music of any kind until I heard T. Rex on the radio in 1971.
Sounds a bit like me. Born 1960 too and Truck On Tyke 73 when i bought single. Different world back then Dave
Led Zeppelin
I'm not a Led Zep fan as i find a lot of it solo's and musical nonsense that all seemed to be a common part of the music scene back then. I do like some of their more melodic songs tho like Tangerine and Going to California. No played out solos full of mistakes but nice acoustic melodies. Dave
From the article: "...on Thursday night while it was parked in Horfield and they were at a friend's, it was stolen..."
Sorry didn't see that. Dave

For me its the Boyband or Girlband thing that i just don't get. Some of them will have maybe one person that is actually talented ie Gary Barlow but rest of the band are stage fillers. Would they survive as solo artists, probably not IMHO. Some of the other bands mentioned i'm not a fan of altho they had occasional songs i liked. Was never a huge fan of Stones either but when i hear their popular songs anywhere i kinda enjoy the odd song but couldn't listen to an album of them. Same with Beatles. Heard a tribute band at a mates 60th and was surprised how much i enjoyed them and new all the songs too. And they were my first single at age 3 All My Loving Even The Smiths i would like the occasional single but albus would be a NO NO. Death Metal thing i've never really got either but i think that is probably just an age thing. Dave

Think the post explains why he's an ex-pro. Good musicians need to adapt to other people they play with whether they are Pros or Amatuers. Being a pro shouldn't make any difference in the way you behave and treat others. Best to move on and look at forming a new band without him. Dave

Shame and hope they either get it back or as suggested a donation page is set up for them. Still don't get how it was stolen if they live in it. Where were the band when it was stolen ? Like the idea of the camper conversion type thing tho. Dave

Its not knocking the luthier but more asking the question of what makes this particular bass worth that kind of money. I'm a big fan off luthiers providing first class quality basses but you have to ask at what price and what are you getting for your money. I freely admitted that i don't know much about Lull basses hence asking the question. I bought an Overwater 6 string custom in 2010 and looked at many basses and couldn't see what the benefits were of the more expensive basses. I guess if you try a bass and it just feels right for you then money shouldn't be an issue if you can afford it of course. Think i'll have a wee look at Lull basses to see what they are all about. I do admit to liking the standard T bird shown above by Happy Jack. Dave
Dave I've ordered the bass on the left below. 100% same spec. When the spec confirmation came through (weeks later), it was wrong...four string, vintage style scratchplate. Considering the money, it was all horribly vague. Now I know what it's like operating a small business; Mark is probably drowning in emails from suppliers, sellers and buyers. The team there have always been very nice when I've needed to speak to them, but maybe it's time for them to take on someone to handle their admin! It doesn't matter whether the bass is £250 or £5,000 you have to know that what you're getting is what you expect to be getting. I'm almost tempted to contact Lull direct prior to shipping to ensure that what they despatch is 100% what I've ordered. It feels awful, but I just have this nagging doubt that something won't be right. Anyhow, I ordered it in the first week of June, it should be here next month. Should. P
Its a nice looking bass and I don't know much about Lull basses but not sure i'd pay that kind of money for what seems a standard looking bass. Are they that good ? I was expecting exotic looking woods or fancy electronics to be honest. Sorry if my response is a bit negative. You have obviously tried one and know how good they are. Wishing you all the very best with it. Dave
Never been there, bought my first Lull through BD, which was pretty smooth. I have a custom Lull on order; I've supplied fills specs, photos etc...I covered the specifics of the order with them, paid a 25% deposit, but they didn't confirm the specification for ages and when they did it was pretty much all wrong. I honestly nearly sh*t myself. I did contact Lull direct and they confirmed they're building what I want BUT if there's anything wrong/incorrect, it's going back. I mean, I'm paying nearly £4.5k...I really would have expected better comms, especially as it's a custom build. I'm still not going to be happy (or mad) until I pop the catches on the case.
I'm looking forward to seeing your bass on here. £4.5k for a bass is quite a fair bit and must be pretty special. Sure it will all go well and you'll be more than happy with it. Dave

I've only ever had good advice from Mark over past few yrs. Can't fault Bass Direct apart from the fact its too far away from me otherwise i'd be skint all the time. Another big plus is his postage as he certainly knows how to protect gear for postage and very quick delivery too. Think i need another trip down South soon. Mmmmmm Dave

WOW The stamina to be able to play like that for long periods. I'm so jealous. Was a big fan of them in 70's / 80's and tried copying a lot of what he did but nowhere near as brilliant. It did however allow me to play a lot faster and tighter than the standard rock music i was playing up to that point. Also let me show off a little when i auditioned Percy Jones, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee and Richard Sinclair from Camel probably my biggest influences. Cant play like them but they were what i was aiming for. Hopefully i learned something from them all. Dave
Pics OK for me. Clear your browser cache..?
Recently did that when i had issues with BC via Google chrome. Moderators showed me how to do it but it didn't help. Started using Firefox for 2-3 weeks then google issue cleared itself. Will try again. I was just curious to see the cabinet as i have the OBC115 & 210 Dave Edit :- tried again and same warning from Norton. The report states that the site is known for identity theft and not to use ? I have 3 cases. 1 that came with my 2nd hand Jaydee 1 that came with my Overwater 6er but also used for my Fenders. (shaped style case) 1 for my other Overwater due to length of headstock and my Warwick Thumb altho i need to add additional packing for the Warwick. (square style case) I use a gig bag for rehearsals tho as there's no great risk of damage. If a bass fits the shaped case i use that as its easier to handle and lighter. Considered getting proper flightcase for my Warwick cause its now quite a rare bass in great condition and standard cases are usually too wide for it. Other than that don't see a need for one case per bass. Mine all hang on wall in the Bass Cave. Dave

I have a Dingwall NG2 5 string and its by far the lightest bass i have. I was suffering from a shoulder and chest ache last year and tried the duo strap idea for a while. That helped by spreading the load evenly across both shoulders. Not sure if that would help lower back but was thinking that if weight is on one shoulder you may be twisting the spine a bit to compensate. Just a theory mind but you can rig up a similar strap by using 2 cheapo straps across each shoulder just to try it. Failing that i would do the exercise thing and strengthen your core. That usually works for me and then i get lazy again and the aches return and its a vicious cycle Few back and stomach exercises should benefit you no matter what. Dave
Not kidding. Get back from the crematorium to the reception, and put on a gig in memory with all the musos who have attended. Or put on a gig in celebration of the guy who passed, consisting of anyone who knew and/or played with him. In effect a jam night of friends. Sadly I've seen too many of both types over the last few years.
I like that. Who knows maybe when i go of course many of my bandmates over the years are a wee bit older than me Still like the idea tho Dave

Are you guys serious about the wakes. Just i've never heard of that before and don't know whether you are kidding ? Dave
yes but which glasses do I use?and even they're no use if the stage is half dark.
one of these might help

And here's me thinking it was just our band. At 57 i'm the 2nd youngest with the guitarist's (70) son at 29 on kys, moothy, gtr, backing vox, and fiddle. He's the talented one in a band of 6. Reading thru this thread i can see all the tell-tale signs and the rehearsals mentioned above are almost a duplicate of what happens with us. It still all sounds good at the end of the day, but you need to be on your toes when one of the guitarists decides to take a stroll down the ad-lib extended solo route Dave

Bought the BLT album mainly for Jack Bruce and thought his guitar work was fantastic. Day of the Eagle another fav song for me too. Need to have a listen to Bridge of Sighs as it seems popular album on this thread. Dave
