1. Think you should voice your opinion before leaving. Won't do any harm. There might be a simple reason for it as mentioned "vocal range" but that should be made clear from the singer that the songs he has picked are ones he can sing. If not then maybe time to move on and find people who respect everyone in the band. I've been in bands like yours where bass and drums are backing bands as far as guitarist / vocalist thought. Doesn't work, won't last. I've also been in bands where members didn't speak up when discussing choice of songs and after spending several weeks rehearsing them decided they didn't like them. Again didn't last. I like a leader in a band and by that i mean everyone has an opinion but one person has a final say and everyone is happy with that idea. It provides direction of sorts. Current 4 piece Prog band works that way. Every aspect of what is done is talked abbout either at rehearsal or via the usual FB or txt and if any doubt the leader who in this band writes majority of material will have a final decision if no-one else can decide. This works really well for me. Hope it works out either way for you but i guess that's just bands for you. ATB Dave
2. I think the new album is the best since the first one. The other albums I found a bit boring and couldn't really get into.
3.
People do realise that my avatar isn't a picture of me....right ?
Oh Bugger - another dream gone
4. Playing in a Prog band at moment and the lower B string just gives some parts of the songs a bit more depth. Not using it all the time but when you do it just vibrates the venue. I've been a big fan of 4 strings for yrs and have 5 & 6 string basses but for different reasons. My 6 fretless i bought to improve my overall technique. Couldn't get used to the 5 or 6 strings in a band situation but having bought myself a Dingwall 5er last week i'm finding it far easier to get into it mainly because the neck feels right compared to others i've tried. No reason why can't use 4 or 5 tho apart from cost that is. I would suggest trying lots of 5 stringers before changing tho. Dave

Lots of energy. Dave
6. The biggest surprise to me was just how easy this bass is to play. Not specifically the fan-fret thing but just the feel of the bass and the neck itself suits me more than any other 5 or 6 string bass i've tried. I have tried other 5 string basses but always seemed to get lost on them with my right and left hand going out of sync and missing strings with my plucking hand. For some odd reason i've not experienced that issue with this bass. Probably down to fact the spacing is 18mm same as my other basses. I have a Peavey 5er but spacing is 16.5mm and that throws me every time. Dave
7. will no more as soon as i can get rehearsal done - ill health within the band has put on hold at moment. With regards the Darkglass pre-amp it does have a tone diff from standard but even on passive the pick-up config had similar effect on tone. The DG gave it that bit more edge / drive. Think it might be a personal preference tho and it just suits me. As Amnesia mentioned earlier "I just like it" sums it up for me and the bass does make you want to play it more and more like an addiction if you like. It just has a nice feel to it. Dave
8.
Thanx ,thats what i thought you were going to say,id love one but a bit out of my price range, enjoy mate
About the same price as a good Fender bass but far better quality and value for money. This was probably top of my budget for a new bass but 2nd hand could probably have got a bit cheaper. If you are thinking of changing then give it some serious thought as they are outstanding IMO.
The NG-2 is a seriously nice bass. I love mine. I don't change the settings at all - volume full, pre-amp on, pickups series and tone controls centred. Fed through a B3K into big box of valves and its mega. I'm currently having a '93 Warwick Streamer LX refinished, and the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp is going in that too. I'm in the Collective!! http://www.dingwallg...all-collective/
Nice write up in the collective. Impressive set of Dingwalls you have there.
9.
Are the new combustion 5s any good?i know they might not be as good as than thn ng2 but are they close? Thanx
I was down to either the combustion or NG2. As far as playability and feel they are identical in every way. The pick up positioning means the NG2 has more mid punch whereas the combustion felt more even toned and probably more suited to covering all styles if you were in a covers band. The NG2 is more targeted for cutting thru a mix was what i felt after playing both. The NG2 also has the Darkglass pre-amp which gives it more edge and bite. With both basses on passive tho the NG2 still had more mid-range punch with the combustion more even across the tonal range possibly leaning towards a mid scoop smiley face tone. There really wasn't a lot in it and both basses would have suited me if i'm honest. The NG2 just edged ahead for my tastes. Dave

11. Keeps coming up with an error message and won't let me load pics i'm afraid. Will try again later. Will look into the Steller unit just in case an upgrade might be in order. Agree 100% with your fan fret description too. It really did surprise me how quickly you adapt and adapt is a strong word to use as it simpy feels natural. Dave
12. The fanned fret thing really wasn't an issue and i had my concerns before i tried it but honestly it was only a very slight change of focus at high end neck around 12th fret upwards. After 5-10mins with it it was sorted. I found the NG2 had more mid punch than the Combustion. Not sure if that's down to the pick up positioning or the Darkglass pre-amp it has but it certaoinly cuts better. The pick up selector i think will be left in the one position as the series sound is so much more full bodied than other settings. Looking forward to rehearsals on Sat to give it a full test. Getting used to 5 string from 4 was more an issue than the fan fret. Dave
13. Traded my 2off Berg AE112 cabs for a Dingwall NG2 5 string from Mark at Bass Direct. Fair old drive today tho. Total of 600miles but well worth finally getting to see the range of basses they have in stock. Narrowed my choice down to either the NG2 or Combustion both black and the NG2 had the edge on the tone. Nice mid-range punch with enormous depth especially on the B string. Also tried a Sanberg but it was no comparison to the Dingwalls. Tried a Spector too but it just didn't feel right at all. The set up on the bass was absolutely perfect and quite a low action without any fret buzz at all. Variety of tone via the pick-up selector is quite dramatic. Add to that active/passive switch and then BMT controls and you can dial in almost any tone you can think off. Thought the fan-fret thing might have been weird but it just felt so normal and didn't seem to be much of an issue after all. Its also quite a light bass compared to most i've tried and the balance of the bass was good too. Mark and his staff (sorry didn't catch his name) were both excellent. I've bought via the phone few times now but meeting Mark was a great experience. I don't think i've ever met anyone with such a passion for bass. I told them about the basses i was interested in and they brought them all down for me and set them up on stands. Tried them all via headphone set and then thru a Vanderkley rig set flat. That's when it was narrowed down to the Dingwalls. Talking with Mark and explaining its for a Prog band set up he ran thru what he thought and why the NG2 might be the better option to cut thru the full band mix in a Prog band and that the Combustion would be more suited to bands that covered a variety of styles. Found Mark to be extremely pleasant and helpful with loads of advice. The one thing that really impressed me tho was the fact i never felt under any pressure at all. If you get the chance to visit the shop its well worth the trip. Trust me i drove 600 miles to get a look and Whow there are some stunning basses in there. Couldn't get the photo upload to work for some reason. All in all a great day. I'm a happy wee bassist once again - - - at least until GAS returns. Dave
14. Someone's missed a bargain with these. Withdrawn from BC sale and traded in for a new Dingwall bass. Dave
15. Last chance for a bargain before trade in Monday 28th Sept for a new bass. I can meet along the way down to Warwick Mon morning if anyone is interested in getting 2off excellent condition Berg AE112's with mint covers to match before shop makes an even bigger profit. DON'T MISS OUT Dave
16. Guy Pratt is on the album but not all the tracks.
17. I got it last week and it is his best solo album in my opinion. Better production quality, well balanced overall style of music with some real classic songs in there. All in all just a great album. Dave
18. If my Berg cabs had sold this would have been a serious contender for me. GLWTS Dave
19. If i had managed to move my Bergs i would have taken your hand off for this and driven 300mile down to meet halfway but sadly the Bergs haven't moved as yet. This is exactly what i was looking for. GLWTS Dave
20. Gorgeous looking Dingwall. Shame you are selling such a nice bass. GLWTS. Great price for one of these. Not many people will spend or have the money for a classic bass like this i'm afraid but hang in there, eventually the right buyer will come along. All the best Dave
21. Planning a trip down to Bass Direct in Warwick. If anyone is interested in meeting along the route down the M6 towards Birmingham and onto Warwick happy to bring cabs along. Looking at Mon 28th Sept. if anyone out there interested. Dave
22. Back from holiday type bump. Willing to meet halfway within reason at no extra cost. Had some interest but doesn't seem to be happening. Dave
23.
I use 2 Sei J5's...both have East pre's...but I've found you really don't need...or want ..all that potential tone shaping on tap. +12db is a ridiculous amount but accept that most pre amps would have this sort of sweep so you need to be very sparing. I'll mostly start with the pre switched in but I will try passive and see if I like it. Generally I find passive a more natural sound. Also, I might try the bridge pickup and decide that is the sound I'll use all night.... but that is in regards to the room EQ and I still need to hear the right sort of sound back and also the balance. At a gig there may be 5 or 6 techniques I need to cater for...and they all need to be able to come through when I put them in the track. With this in mind, I just throw them in on a whim so that is why sound set-up is so critical. Of course, these often end up as no more than a fill...so they can be throwaway and gone in an instant. My general sound is bright and lacks huge bass... as I want the character of the sound to come thru... I want a very high end so a percussive strum will be heard...but not one that is so brittle or harse. That will also tend to be a factor in the bass sound right down to the lower notes and then I'll add bass to give it bottom and foundation. A quick look at my amps..and they all have their various bias'... will typically have the bass on about 10.o clcock. The mid bias is the variable but between 10 and 2... and treble and presense to suit. My cabs all have horns up to about 50% I'd suggest the EQ stack is not the easiest or more forgiving sound from a technique point of view and I find dull old strings make it 10 times harder to control as you'll get thick fat noises with no nuance...and also it is hard to wipe off or clean up a thunky old sound. I'm not at all heavy handed so all my sound control comes from my right hand..and to a lesser extent, my left hand. The main difference between the two amps that I'm using atm...cabs aside,..is the balance and heft. Th e actual EQ I can get pretty close as that is the sound I hone so that is the sound I'm working from. I'll get it pretty easily even with a new amp. I prefer 10's over the 12's I have ... but these are fine lines that no one else will likely notice. You wont convince me there is no difference tho...and it is at volume that this is the most apparent. Have to say, very happy with all parts of my sound..it is the playing that is the problem
Thanks JTUK. That was quite an interesting and well informed reply. Nice to hear how others approach their sound and set up. Agree with the active and find my Overwater pre-amp only needs a slight change from centre position to give sufficient cut thru the mix and allow my bass to be heard rather than simply felt underfoot. The 10' clock bass setting did surprise me a little tho. I would generally have centred but might try tweaking down a bit to see how it affects my overall tone. Cheers and thanks for the detail. Dave
