2. I just don't get it at all. If i want a new bass i want it to look like a new bass and as you say few yrs down the line i don't want to have to take to luthier to have it resprayed properly. Complete waste of some very nice basses in my opinion. Dave
3. Just take your daughter to the gigs. She already fits the case so all plus points. Do it now before she grows out of it tho. Dave
4. Didn't work when i tried on laptop using chrome. Card option was fine but foriegn countries additional costs is a bummer. Try contacting Virgin who run the site ? Dave
5.
At this price point failure is always an issue Just over £300 for an all valve amp is insane!
It was approx 4 yrs ago and i think they were relatively new on market so maybe just teething troubles and as you say at that price worth a punt. Dave
6. I'm same here as i bought Kilo when they came out around 2012 i think and it didn't work straight out the box. Full refund by Thomann no quibble at all. Had no response from Hartke at all. No response from Larry H either when i contacted him by email provided by Talkbass Forum guys. Would never buy anything from Hartke. Have to say that i played thru a Hartke LH500 & 2 off 1x15 XL cabs at a gig few weeks ago and it was an impressive sound with my Fender PJ Deluxe but i still wouldn't buy a Hartke because of the reliabilty and lack of customer service. Dave
7.
You're on mate! Not sure I get up that way often but will be happy to dep if I do!!
Your good and no dep required. Its a good cause. Glad i could help. Just don't forget to keep us posted on how you do. NOW GET OUT THERE AND DO SOME TRAINING. Dave
8. Sorry to burst the bubble a bit here but back in 2012 our guitarist bought 2 off these for our Deep Purple tribute band and both failed in same way. Lost the volume after a lot of weird crackling od noises. They both went within a few weeks of each other while being used in rehearsal studios. We weren't too impressed with them altho the tone from them was pretty impressive for such a cheap amp. He sent them back, got full refund and then bought himself a 2nd hand Marshall head of some model i can't really remember now. Hope yours is a lot better. Certainly looks good with the chilli cab and from your feedback sounds good too. I'm looking forward to updates on it. Dave
9. yep same here. Great portable rig and competes well with bigger Ampeg SVT i have both in volume and tone. I find it also cuts thru the mix far better. Have fun. Dave
10.
doesn,t bother me
White Orange OBC115 is nice. I was meaning the 410 and 115 cabs at 24 & 25" widths. How does that rig sound out of curiosity. Is it the 12 cab on top. Dave
11. Paypal didn't work, donation by card payment worked fine. Good luck with the race Carl. You'll do well. Your next dep gig for me will be in Inverness next time i play there Dave
12. Tried to donate but payment page keeps freezing on me ?? Anyone else have a problem ? Dave
13. I have the 121p combo with ext cab and its as loud as my Ampeg SVT4 Pro. Used it in larger venues circa 150-200 without PA. I was depping and when i turned the amp on and not even at high volumes the sound guy said it sounded great on its own and no need to DI. My wife also said the sound out front was excellent and could hear the bass very clearly (Jazz bass). Compare that to using my other main rig at that time of Ampeg SVT4 Pro and Berg HT322 and my back loves me now. Tonally i found you could get a "similar" tone from the Markbass rig. Dave
14. Recently tried the Orange with a Hartke 8x10 cab and it was probably my ideal tone. Deep warm lows with nice mid punch. The feeling of depth was quite amazing. However i did find that changing the EQ didn't have a huge effect on tone. It was a very old Orange amp tho and appeared to have a frequency control and a boost/cut rather than the standard AD200b model so not sure what model it was. ? I have to say i love that Orange tone and have since bought the OBC115 cab with view to finally get the amp and a 10 or 12 cab but depend on cost at the time. Had Matamp power amps years ago and they had similar tones. Afraid i've never even heard of the others you mentione. Dave
15.
Dave, any opportunity to discuss Mike Rutherford, Shergold's and Genesis is internet porn! I do recall pics of him with a unfamiliar bass around that time.
Think there's a few guys on here that might be into Genesis in a big way. Think maybe you and Toneknob fit that bill. I'm just a fan of a certain period around Seconds Out to Duke era. Claim to fame Mr Collins bought me lunch one day. Dave
16. I take that back. Just watched the 1972 live version and its a Gibson EB3 (twin pick up) and its exactly that sound so my apologies. Jack Bruce did have that same sound to be honest. Dave
17. Kinda sounds more like his Fender to me but still overdriven thru amp. He did play his basses quite hard and that helped with the attack. Dave
18.
Had fun with this the other day...
Loved those Peavey MkIV amps. You could get some amazing tones from those 2 channels and graphic. Bit heavy but fantastic amp. Dave
19.
Down and Out's all bass pedals - no electric bass on it and yes Firth is bass and 12 string so it would have been his Shergold 4/12 modular.
I knew i was wrong with Firth and that's why i then thought it must have been Down & Out. Wasn't sure about it to be honest but according to what i've read he used the 8 string on I Know What I Like at Earls Court 1977. He apparently used it for that song on Wind & Wuthering tour which was before my time to be honest. Dave
20. That looks like a bit of a bargain. If i hadn't just bought a Fender Deluxe Precision and Orange OBC115 cab i might have sneaked this past the wife but she's got an eye on my spending at the moment. At that price with flightcase and delivered its a fantastic buy so have a wee BUMP Dave
21. Back to the original post its possible if they adapt the product as already discussed it could be a reasonable seller. Dave
22.
Firth of Fifth is a bass/12-string song for Mike in concert, pretty sure he didn't change guitars during the song. (We're scraping the surface of why I'm no longer in tribute bands now, by the way)
Down And Out but could be wrong
23.
Interesting story Dave, thanks for sharing. My 4/8 double neck had a great 4-string neck, exactly what you'd expect from Shergold. The 8-string was a bit difficult though. The serial number was 8401, following their convention for the first two numbers being the number of strings per neck. The -01 doesn't necessarily mean it was the first one, as your story supports, but it's a curious theory. As far as I can remember Mike Rutherford is credited with using an 8-string on Wind & Wuthering and Seconds Out, but the songs it's used in aren't mentioned. The only overlap between those two albums is Afterglow, which doesn't sound like an 8 to me. Happy to be proved wrong though!
Mike wasn't using a Shergold 8 at that time. He used a Hagstrom at that point but think Shergold were looking at building him a proper 8 string rather than like mine which has a shorter scale length. I guess he had more influence than me and i'm not sure wh that is. Think he used 8 on Firth on Seconds out and pretty sure on one of the tracks from Then There Were Three. Before that i couldn't be sure without going over the old albums again. Assuming you still have yours ? Would love another one altho not a twin neck unless i could locate my old one which i did try a few yrs back but it could be anywhere nowadays. Dave
24.
Any idea what the serial number was on that one Dave?
Afraid not. Not sure if the photos have a date as they were taken as soon as i got it. Checked and photos aren't dated but looking at reference points from other pics i have and when i started playing i think this might be 78. It was my 2nd bass after a Columbas Jazz. I started playing in 76 and would have had the Columbas about 2yrs before buying the Shergold. Latest would be late 78 / early 79. It was so long ago and a bit heavy for me. Traded it for an Aria SB1000. Cost me £630. That bit i can remember LOL I remember the conversations with Shergold (not sure who i was talking to) and they said they didn't make 8 strings altho they were looking at the possibilty. At that time Mike Rutherford was a big part of it and he played an 8 string bass and i think they wanted Mike to use one they had designed along with the twin neck he had. They suggested to me that they didn't have their systems set up for one as they didn't make full custom basses but could adapt their existing 6 string neck if that would be ok to me. Being young and naive i went with it. It was a great bass to play. The necks were fantastic and they had that distinct Shergold sound. Dave
25. More than likely its a design more for sound than looks but every other cab designer has managed it. I'm going by the spec on their website. You would need to be big Arnie to knock over their 115 cab off the 410 i think. Only an inch in it but we could all do with an extra inch on the lw end Dave
