1.
But I'd say for me to do what I do..and not limit myself in anyway, I need a sound that does indeed do it all. For example, a P bass with flats sound would force me to play one way... and I'd find that un-necessarily limiting. Not saying I don't like that sound..just that is just one facet of how I play... so I cop all those tones of off one sound, pretty much. And since I'm not chopping and changing, I don't have to re-EQ... I think you can do this with a passive bass, but it is easier on a an active. The trick is not to have people know you are active, IMO. Most amps and pre are over engineered in terms of EQ options... and that is a road to nowhere if you get caught up on it. Slight tangent, but hey..!!
What bass are you using at the moment JTUK. ? My fav bass is my Jazz but i do find it lacks a little depth. My Overwater fretless gives me far more depth but not a bass i use for every song. I do tend to keep my amp same set up at home or gigging apart from volume. I think that's where i have the active on the bass set slightly boosted on lo-mid too What i have found recently is that the Markbass rig i've just bought sits far better in the full band mix as it seems to have a more natural lo-mid tone to my Berg cabs. Call that colouring if you like but it does make a fair bit of difference to how the band sounds. Its all original Prog band at moment. Dave
 2. Brilliant gifted player but can only listen to the odd track every now and again. Enormous Room is one of my fave bass tracks tho. Considered buying one of his albums but thought it might be all a bit same so will just enjoy his youtube vids when i feel like a listen. Think he's someone i prefer to watch too as i can't follow what he's doing from a music track. Fascinating player. Thanks for posting ...... brilliant Dave
 3. if you contact them with the lower price to be confirmed they will probably sell at that. I've just bought a Digitech Jamman from Woodbrass who are based in France and their prices were lower than Thomann or GAK by between £3-£10 with free delivery on items over £99. Paypal payment and invoice was exactly what they quoted. Might be worth a look. Dave
 4. Digitech Jamman arrived Fri, Spent Sat afternoon playing around with it and its exactly what i was looking for. Loaded up a few of the items to trigger and will test with full band next reahearsal. Quality of playback is pretty good too. It's well made and pretty easy to get things moving even without the manual altho did need to use it when i wanted to delete a stored file. Can be set up as a single play or on a loop. You can stop the sample instantly or on its own when single loop complete or you can fade by hitting stop once and it fades out, hit stop again and it stops completely. Each loop seems to be set up individually ie instant stop or fade out. Having good fun with it jamming along with drum tracks too and just being bass daft with loads of bass played over each other. I know its daft but does make for some weird bass lines Did think the software was a bit basic. Can't seem to do a lot with it on PC ie arranging files and resending back to unit but maybe i'm missing something. It would have been good to be able to record back onto PC and edit the recording and then feedback to Jamman unit but looks like that's not possible. That's the only -ve i have so far and its a minor one at this stage. THANKS FOR THE ADVICE GUYS - as always BC'ers are on hand to help guide us through the world of Bass Geekdom Dave
 5. If a tall drummer he should have a Hi-Hat in case of sunstroke.
 6.
Forgot all about Barclay James Harvest, another that had their moments. And a splendid band we supported at The Swan in Billingham, about mebbes '81. Saracen. Superb.
Yep Another great band. Live Tapes was the 1st album i heard them and loved the bass sound. XII was a god album tho. Dave
 7. Aphrodites Child 1970/71 era - not sure what album but this track was always a cracking prog song to me. https://youtu.be/3KCbqhJt16k Also another i had forgotten about was a German band called Eloy https://youtu.be/Bus65ovjOOg Dave
 8.
Some great bass work from Tony Reeves on that first Greenslade album.
Met Tony Reeves doing a Burns Bison / MM mixing studio equipment demo locally. He was excellent and really nice guy to talk with. Had a huge influence on me as a beginner back in late 70's Dave
 9.
Love that album and it's a great candidate for definitive prog. Saw John Wetton TOGWT once singing over that In The Dead Of Night bass line. Difficult.
That was the clip i was looking for but couldn't find it. That was first time i'd really heard John Wetton and was gobsmacked at the energy on it. Brilliant. Dave
 10. Still no interest. I'm surprised. Expected them to shift quicker than this. Might need to look at Gumtree or Evilbay to shift them soon. Shame as i thought this was a really good price for these. Dave
 11.
Have fun! Another thing I've done is plug a mic in and let my kids record themselves and little loops on it. They love hearing themselves back and layering up daft sounds. I may drop 'Twinkle Twinkle' in at a gig one day
Thankfully i don't have kids but the cats might make an interesting choir especially with me in lead meows Dave
 12. How about UK - In The Dead Of Night John Wetton at his best. https://youtu.be/AeXSQl56no8 Dave
 13.
sorry i didnt read any of the previous comments so not sure if this way has already been mentioned but in my old band we used a digitech jamman stereo (direct to PA) to play the samples, was easy to save them on (real time play in/loop or save file via PC) and with the bank up/down buttons i could change the samples and still play bass.
Just ordered one on-line at £109 new with free gift of pair drumsticks (bribe to the drummer) Thanks for the advice and help with this Much appreciated. Dave
 14. I'm quite into my DMX lights but found Bluesparky's post excellent and wish i had read that before i got into it. It also gave me some good advice even after 3yrs with my rig. Cheers for that Dave
 15. Afraid i'm not a techno by any means and don't have that kind of phone but i have seen it done tho. Think i prefer the pedal idea. Dave
 16.
I'd personally take a best of anything to represent a particular short time scale whether it be sport, art etc. I love Second's out but it does represent seven years worth of the bands output, including line-up changes. Apologies if I was a bit short - I do that
Cheers Not really knowing you i wasn't sure how to take it but now that i understand i'll take it in good faith next time we talk prog. Dave
 17. Put your cans on a slow fade and leave them linked together and they should be enough for what you are looking for. Next step up from that is a cheap DMX 2 or 3 channel foot controller where you can switch on the ones on slow fade and another channel for faster fade Moving up the range with more channels you can add in some spotlights for solos, smoke machine etc One thing i've found is the LED lights have a narrower beam more like a spot than a flood so might need more cans than the old PAR types. Check out Youtube for more info on specific items. That's where i picked up most of it and i was new to DMX then too. Now i have a 24 channel desk with spots, scanners, projectors, lazers and smoke machines altho it does take a bit of time to do the original programming set up. Dave
 18.
We'll agree to disagree then. And um, thanks for pointing that out dad.
Not sure why the attitude towards me on this topic when few others had the same thoughts as myself ? If i've taken it the wrong way my apologies.
Surely a live album and a compilation are different things? We can nominate whatever we want.

Right. If you're allowing 'prog-rock' in the first place, anything goes, surely??
19. i tend to play it in car when travelling to/from work. i get peace to listen then
 20. Annoying Twit :- Have a listen to Eloy, Big Big Train, The Sun Travellers and see if any of them are what you are looking for. ?? https://youtu.be/86mAyo8MEyo?list=PL6AvfJ1w-QfaRfWr6KXeX8NZ4stpEekxE https://youtu.be/Mfem_VRimoY?list=PLlTTPGp-ITaLyMQqdQ5qxDpCXdi4FGM55 http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.php?artistID=72083&mediaID=480727 Hopefully the links work - i'm not an expert in this stuff. Dave
 21.
The best thing about this thread is being reminded of stuff that you'd forgotten about. I know live albums have kind of been 'excluded', but; Bursting Out. Good to see some more up to date stuff too; Spock's Beard. Steve Wilson has just been touring with guys that I think are stars on their respective instruments: Nick Beggs and Dave Kilminster.
Nick Beggs has to be a younger version of Tony Levin and has been doing lots of session work with various bands. Very versatile player.
 22.
Second's Out's live and therefore a compilation - not allowed. It isn't in the right running order either.
Think the OP's title was "Best Prog Album Ever. No mention whether live, compilation or whatever. Its surely about what album you actually prefer. Some of the albums the tracks were taken from i found boring and didn't buy them but when you take the best tracks and make it live its shows exactly how good Genesis were in those days. Dave
 23. Are we talking DMX lighting rigs here TimR ? If so i'd be really interested in this. For me you need your basic sound to light trigger for stage colours A slow fade in/out fast fade in/out then need your spot lights usually for soloists / singer effects triggers as and when required ie :- lazers pin-spots projector smoke machine trigger Hope that helps a bit. I'm currently using a 24ch desk controlled by my better half but it would be better for me to trigger effects when needed as the songs are all originals only the band knows them really well and what's best for certain parts of the songs. Dave Dave
 24. Would have to say :- Genesis - Seconds Out is my all time fav album Floyd - DSOTM is 2nd I play these 2 albums regularly since buying even after 40yrs. From modern era :- Arjen Lucassen - Lost In The New Reel. Steve Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase Minor Giant - On The Road The list could be endless but these are few favs. Prog being my fav kind of music. Dave
 25.
From memory (though I haven't specifically tried) on questions 2 and 3. 2. Yes, pretty sure I have mistakenly done this at some point and had two playing. 3. Yes, You can switch location and get the next one ready while one is playing. 1. No idea, not used the software. I'd try and keep it simple with relevant samples next to each other as keeping a bassline tight whilst scrolling through and looking at your feet is tricky. I also leave a blank channel between patches as I figure if you happen to kick on too far, for instance, it's better to have nothing playing than the wrong sample.
brilliant redbandit599 really appreciate the help and advice gonna give a closer look at the jamman Dave
