1. I use various strings across my basses. I have Elixirs on my Overwater 6er fretless and my Warwick Thumb and as stated by Grangur they give the Warwick a nicer rounded growl. I use them until coating starts to peel but tone remains pretty stable throughout. I find them a little more tension than my Overwater, DAddario or Fender nickel strings but not enough to bother me. I feel as though i can move faster on them too but again not sure if that's my imagination or not. The main benefit for me is length of time they last and the steady tone over that long period. I've had sets on basses for 2-3yrs altho not basses i use on a regular basis and never gigged basses. Dave
2. You need to get your licence altho i didn't drive cars till 28. Bikes up till that point but we always just hired vans and drivers anyways back in them days. The lightweight cab is the way to go then. The Markbass CMD 121P literally is approx 15" cubed and easily a one finger lift. Had the Genz Streamliner which had a nice warm feel to it due to valve section. Nice amps. I have found recently that its the cab that seems to make most difference in my own tone rather than the amp. Not sure if its down to better speakers these days or rather that in my younger days virtually all speakers sounded much the same due to manufacturing practices back then. So many changes in technology over past 10 yrs that you are left with a huge choice in everything from sound, weight, tone and of course price. When i was your age it was either Marshall or Peavey for a decent stack to impress. Dave
3. Had a wee listen. Being a Prog fan for almost 40yrs now i'm not really sure which bracket your sound fits. It probably is a touch of Progressive yet it has a distinct funk feel too with a modern vocal feel that isn't funk or prog - that's the bit i can't pigeon hole but that's a good thing because it makes you more unique. Sounds good and i liked it a lot. How i made my mind up was based on listening to bassists i like the sound off live and having a few friends that have both TC or Markbass rigs and i preferred the Markbass. I did think the clinical sound was gonna be for me but it just doesn't sit well in the mix for many bands i've played with. My HT322 Berg cab has traditional speakers and certainly has more oomph than the Neo cabs but this Markbass floors it even within the house. I am lucky enough to have no real close neighbours and can ramp up my amp within reason when wife not in. LOL It wasn't until i would use in band context that i found it didn't quite work for me. Having an active bass like my Warwick made a huge difference to the Berg clinical sound probably due to the active tone influence help colour the tone more. Dave
4.
I figure the worst case scenario with me buying second hand is I'll lose a little bit of cash but not lots. Will be getting the Genz Benz shuttle tomorrow if all goes well. I feel like 'clinical' is a sound I actually would go for although I can't really say for certain at the moment. We've been described by a few people as "proggy funk rock" a few times so I'd say that's a decent description! Playing a Paisley venue on Saturday 1st August and Glasgow West End venue in the 14th (shameless self promo!)
So what are you using at moment. ?
5. Just took delivery of Hotcovers for my Markbass CMD121P & NY121 extension cab. Great prices, great fit and fantastic quality gear. Quick delivery and topped off with DPD delivering at exact time they stated between 7-8pm tonight. Highly recommended covers if you're looking. Dave
6. I did this few yrs back but ended up going for Genz streamliner 600 and 2off Berg AE112 cabs. Was good but very clinical sound and i couldn't quite put my finger on what was missing. It was depth. Having just bought the Markbass CMD121P & NY121 ext cab i find the tone is coloured but in a good way and it has far more depth. Not necessarily bottom end but possibly LO-Mid punch which seems to suit me better using a Jazz bass. I've only just got it last week with first rehearsal on Sat at decent volumes so will find out how it sits in the mix. I found my Bergs couldn't cut thru guitar and keys in a Prog Rock band no matter what amp i was using from Genz, GK, Ampeg, Warwick they just didn't cut it. On a side by side at home you can clearly hear the added depth and rounded tone of the Markbass compared to the clean clinical sound of the Bergs with a GK head. I did look at the TC gear and know some friends with them and they sound good but again i feel they are a bit more clinical than the Markbass. What kind of music are you playing and where abouts do you play - I'm in Biggar area so not far away. Dave
7.
Ticket booked and a room on the delightful Grassmarket Bench hotel, boasting seating space for three and comfortably sleeps one
I can vouch for this accomodation altho some years ago. I believe they are now 4 star with en-suite Dave
8. Had a Shergold twin 4 & 8 string basses tho. Very heavy and not something you would use for a full 2 hr set unless built like a brick thingy house. Epiphone are doing a reasonable priced bass / guitar twin neck i think and would be worth checking out. Not the best in the world but they are ok. Dave
9. Just took delivery of my Hotcovers for both amp and cab. Absolutely brilliant covers, perfect fit, extremely well made and would have to say far more solid than my Roqsolid cover i bought for my Bergantino HT322. Also great delivery service by DPD too delivere at exact time they said they would between 7-8pm tonight. Dave
10. I'm similar to yourself as only got back into playing in bands few yrs back and have ended up in an originals band where everything just seems right and we all get on really well and the music (Prog) is what i've always wanted to do. God luck and best wishes with the project Dave
11. Its like looking at my life in bass. Fantastic collection Nick. Brought back so many memories. All good too. I remember all of them thru the years. Had quite a few of them too. Fender Precision, Jazz, Ibanez, Aria, WAL, Shergold, Yamaha, Overwater, Warwick, Peavey, Jaydee, Columbus, Epiphone, ESP Remember wanting a Pangbourne Warrior when they first appeared but decided on a WAL instead. Dave
12. Levitate by Dr Hook. https://youtu.be/JLmLY0Dbp_Q Well it just makes me laugh Dave
13. Both of us were into almost same bands Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush and all the other Prog / Rock bands from that era. I had more interest in bass related bands like early Gino Vannelli, Bruford (Jeff Berlin), Camel and some jazz/funk style albums that she had never really heard off. She then started getting into a wider and more varied musical taste. Albums we both had :- Dark Side of the Moon, Trick of the Tail, Seconds Out, Hemispheres, 2112 We still listen to virtually the same bands and she even likes the Prog band i play in Mind Sculpture. Dave
14. weekend bumpity bump. Still no local interest - mmmmm ??? Dave
15. Thanks for answering sblueplanet's question Lozz196. Much the same as most rigs when you double up on cabs. Not so much louder but more presence and depth. Only just got it so can't comment on how it sounds within band context. Rehearsals on hold till holidays over but week to go until next studio rehearsal and will be able to crank it a bit. So far i've got Gain at 2 o clock and the master is barely on and yet it is more than loud enough at home even compared to my other rigs and that includes an Ampeg SVT4 Pro rig. The one thing i have found quite noticeable is the depth with EQ at its mid points. It just seems to fill the room and is very rich and full. The tone filter VLE and VPF give it a nice vintage sound both set at 9 or 10 o clock positions. Add to that the extreme lightweight benefits its amazing what these cabs can put out. Will put up a review after next rehearsal Dave
16.
You don't really need to bring anything if you don't want to. On the website there will be a list of most of the guys going and they list the gear they are bringing you can do the same and if there are duplicates it is easy to sort out so that one person brings the item rather than two. Means we get more gear with as much variation as possible for everyone to have a look at.
I just show up with my ticket (and better half) and have a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable day out. Great people, well organised and always a great demo from the guest. Steve Lawson this year who i had not heard much about was exceptionally interesting and a comedian as well. I can see how a more central venue would draw a bigger crowd but that's what makes the Moffat show a bit more relaxing because its not all bassists doing their funk slap thang. Some very talented bassists attending and have heard some nice techniques. Did miss the jam session this year. That should be revived as makes for god fun just listening to the guys. Dave
17.
Can't go wrong with GAK. I've had top service every time. I look there first these days.
GAK came across big time on this and fair impressed. I use either GAK or Bass Direct as they are UK based but have used Thomman who also offer a great service. Dave
18. Ordered the covers from Hotcovers who are local to me so cheers for the advice on the covers guys. Dave
19. My new Markbass CMD121P & NY121 next to my Berg rig.
20. At rehearsals i'm usually early and 1st to set up so can plug away for few mins until guitarist is ready. Once he is set up i let him have his 5mins. Then the kys sets up while we wait on the drummer adjusting the studio kit from left to right handed and then he will thrash for few minutes to get positioning right. Then quick level check amongst us and we go for our warm up song. We have all agreed no noise between songs during gigs. If someone is talking at rehearsals about song we've just done or are about to do we all stop and listen. Maybe i'm just lucky we all think same way. Dave
21.
Keep the boxes, you might be able to post a couple of 1x12s in them
The Bergs are bigger than the Markbass and don't fit. I tried that in hope. Dave
22. Not having the original boxes or good enough packaging i'd be too worried they might get damaged as they are in virtualy new condition. Don't think there are any marks at all on them as they have only seen one gig and a few rehearsals. Rest of the time i've used one of them for practice in the house. Even the covers are clean and no marks. I was hoping that a buyer could be found locally who could pick them up or meet me within reason. I think you might be a bit too far for that though. Dave
23.
What about a picture !
Will do once i tidy the spare room a bit. Tomorrow night ... honest. Dave
24. New Markbass rig CMD121P & NY121 arrived today and first impressions are "amazing". Can't believe the depth and mid punch from it with everything set 12 o'clock. Also the filters make a huge difference to the sound. They appear to be extremely well built and solid feel to them. All that and they literally weigh nothing........well not a lot. Looking forward to next rehearsal to give it a full run out. Dave
25. Thanks Tauzero bit surprised myself but i don't have original boxes or any packing materials so pick up only. To be honest i'm in no rush to sell. Not desperate for the money but don't want to give them away for a lot less than i think they are worth. Just bought a Markbass rig and its quite a different sound to Berg cabs. Might keep them just to have a change. Dave
