1. I quite like playing it and would simulate the chord sequences without volume and it then looks as though you are doing something. Occasionally i have played a root note here and there but think best left as the original. When younger i really enjoyed the vibe from this song so was never an issue doing it. Dave
2. jazz bass into Roland pre-amp bi-amped into 2off Matamp tube power amps into 1x15" & 1x12" custom cabinet. nowadays its my jazz into Ampeg SVT4 PRO with Bergantino HT322. Dave
3. rack light for doodling on a dark stage or a neon or UV striplight maybe an LE version if available
4. I've had 6 fretless basses on/off over the years. Currently have 2. My Overwater 6 and Jaydee 4. Don't use them a lot but i like having them and find they improve my technique as you need to be more accurate. Don't think i would use it in a rock band as i find they don't have enough attack or edge to cut thru mix. Dave
5. yep they have been around since 80's mainly in the Glasgow area. Saw them last year supporting Pallas at Glasgow Classic Grand and thought they had come a long way since 80's music. Going again in Feb same gig, same venue.
6. I'm a fan of Thomann but always remember if paying by card you will get hit for the exchange rate each way. Still worth it because of the savings on the goods tho. Dave
7. I bought an oil filled heater from Argos few yrs back for conservatory and it has a digital controlled thermostat which basically means it has a tighter control without the usual 2 degree change in temp when it switches off to back on. Normally you wouldn't notice that if walking into a room and moving around but if sitting quietly reading a book you do start to feel the cooling period. With this heater the change in temp is max 1 degree and you don't notice any significant change. Appreciate that's getting a bit to fine control but if you are buying its worth considering. Oil-filled by far the better elec option. Assuming the house is all electric ? If you already have gas heating consider putting an additional radiator in altho gonna cost you a bit more to install if using plumber. In long run it will be cheaper. Another option is buy a huge valve power amp and just leave it switched on all the time. Enough heat from one of them All the best Dave
8. Tickets bought for myself and better half who has bought me most of my basses so cant complain in that dept. Maybe she'll buy me another after the Bass Bash Looking forward to it again as missed it last year. Dave
9. The more you use thumb to play the skin will naturally harden same as normal finger style and the tone changes from a dull deep sound to a slightly more solid harder tone. Someone mentioned using your nail which is something i do depending on band i'm with. You can get thumb picks which might be an option that helps. People have already mentioned changing pick up setting and adjusting tonal mix. Dave
10. Relax, enjoy the audition for what it is. A way of meeting other musicians. Sometimes it leads to ongoing friendships within a band context and sometimes the chemistry just isn't there and you will probably feel it. Learn the songs and make sure you know them better than the band. That always impresses a new band. Don't be too flash. Stick to what the cover needs and maybe in between songs show a little flair but never hold the band up doing it. Go with the flow of the guys and it should all be great fun. All the very best with it and good luck. Dave
11. Had given up bands mid 2014 because of the usual band politics issues. Then approached from 2 guys who have been writing and recording all their own material. Auditioned and got it. Fair chuffed. Great natured and very easy to get on with personally. Its an Anathema / Opeth / Floyd influenced originals Prog band and hoping to complete the line up early 2015 with addition of a drummer into same influences. Auditioned a few but either not really committed to Prog or just not competent enough. Still looking tho. Then start gigging. Quite excited about it all to be honest. Also getting my USA Ampeg SVT4 PRO converted from 110V to 230V in Jan. to save carrying an external transformer around. Its heavy enough as it is. Wish i had bought one of these yrs ago. Its exactly the sound i've been trying to get from other amps but not quite managed altho some excellent amps have been tried and came close. Looking at taking up race cycling again after few yrs away but need to get a bit fitter at my age. That's it for me. Dave
12. Liking the Budgie suggestion but i'd go for Budgie "In For The Kill" & UK "In The Dead of Night" Dave
13. My 89 Thumb NT retailed at around £1100 when i bought it in 1989 yet in 2004 they were still around same price and then all of a sudden with the run on various custom basses the Thumb is now £3700 Some change however the 89 Thumb is one gorgeous bass to play. Compared to the Rockbass range its obviously a different world. Don't think i would spend that kind of money on one nowadays although my Overwater was circa £3k 4 yrs ago but that was handmade to my liking plus a 6 stringer. This is all very daunting when you step back and look at what bass is my "TO GO" bass of a Fender Jazz -- at the moment. Dave
14. Here's mine. 1001RBi & MB200. Dave
15. Ampeg SVT4PRO has dual power amps which can be stereo, dual mono or bridged. Not sure why you might want stereo effect on stage tho. Can see the benefit of pre-amp being stereo to PA and getting benefit front of house.
16. yep did look at that but they are shown as intermittent transformers usually for power tools and altho they get used for lighting they do cut out if used for too long with decent sized load. Other option was to build a 19"rack mounted power supply myself but then double the weight. Amp is heavy as it is and would be nice to keep it all tidy. Appreciate the thought tho Bertbass. The guy has sent me a photo of the internals of one he's done before to confirm it is exactly same as mine ie one of the older versions so he does come across as quite competent and seems to be taking the time to put my mind at ease. Cheers Dave
17. Been quoted by GSE to upgrade my recently purchased US 110V Ampeg SVT4PRO (2001) to 220V circa £250. Transformer from Ampeg obviously biggest cost. Does anyone on BC have any experience or kknowledge of them and whether they are worthwhile. Its the older version without the transformer tapping tabs. Tx is hard-wired on both input / outputs with trailing wires. Dave
18. Our guitarist and keyboard player are huge fan and let me hear them for first time few weeks ago. Very impressed and very Steve Hillage thing going on at times. Surprised i had never heard of them before considering how long they've been on the go. Excellent post. Dave
19. Had drummers that slowed down very slightly on occasion but rest of the band would normally adapt however this was only a very slight speed change. At practice i've had drummers play a song a bit too slow or fast all the way through and we would stop, correct it and that was usually the end of it. None of these would have been picked up by an audience unless musicians. I have played with drummers that just click right away and its a great feeling when both drums and bass are syncopated enough to know where the other might go especially when writing own material. Not sure if i would walk from an otherwise pleasant experience and might try suggestion of metro of some kind to help. Think you'll find that Dave Grohl may have slowed down very slightly on occasion but not to extent it would be noticeable to an audience. Dave

21.
Dear All I’m currently writing a dissertation about the preferred method of tuning guitars and bass guitars. I would appreciate it very much if you have 5minutes for me to answer the questions below and PM or email it to me at [email protected] . 1. How long have you been playing your instrument? 35yrs 2. Do you use an electronic tuner? If yes which model? Korg Pitchblack rack mount 3. Do you tune by ear or electronic tuner? electronic 4. If by ear how do you go about? harmonics 5. Are you always 100% happy with your tuning? / if not yes 6. Why are you not happy with your tuning? n/a 7. What disturbs you about the electronic tuner nothing 8. Do you know how to tune by ear? yes 9. What is your preferred tuning method? electronic thank you very much for your invaluable support in advance. dazzyroots
22. Try Bandmix. Some good people in there. Dave
23. I mounted my streamliner on a 19" rack tray supplied by someone on BC. Worked really well all you need to do is measure the feet distances and screw in from the bottom. Dave
24. I've always thought a 15" speaker gives more depth and altho i've tried various others including my Berg HT322 & AE112 cabs there's still something missing and more and more i'm heading towards the fact i don't have the low end depth from a 15" cab. There are lots of facts and figures out there explaining why a modern 10" or 12" speaker is equivelant to an old 15" cab and that's great for theory but in my reality my old 15" speakers along with either a 2x10 or 12" cab just seemed to offer a far more "robust" sound for a classic rock band if that's what you are looking for. I've just bought a 2nd hand Ampeg SVT4 PRO and i have a distinct feeling i may well be looking at Ampeg 1x15" cab stacked with their 4x10 or 2x10 cab. A 12" cab is pretty close tho and does give a better mid-range feel. Dave
25. Emailed Ampeg UK address i took from the Ampeg website but no response i'm afraid. Not impressed by that at all. I'm waiting on a Glasgow repair shop returning from hols to see what he can offer. Mains goes straight to a capacitor board and from there to input of transformer. Can't see the whether the circuit board connection is paralleled into transformer and the capacitors like a mains buffer. Might be replacing the transformer with a 240 in and required outputs along with a 110v output returnrd to the circuit board might be a solution but really need an expert to confirm and cost. OR i just use the external transformer and mount it in a wheeled flightcase with amp and my spare GK and tuner. ?? Dave
