1. Went to school and same bars as Doogie White vocalist ex-Rainbow and various other rock bands. Down to Earth and keeps in touch with some of his old band mates to this day. Also Davie Pentland backing vocalist / guitarist for Hue & Cry many moons ago. Then there were the River Detectives who i briefly met a few times with Davy Pentland who was a pal of theirs. Do these count ? Dave
2. Gorgeous basses. Had one when they first came out and Jack Bruce was using them. Fantastic range of tones and very sharp and clear across its tonal range. As you say a great bass to play. Afraid Kent a little too far for me too. Good luck with the sale - has to be one of the nicer ones i've seen for sale in a while especially at that price. Dave
3. CC Music in Glasgow have one at £399. Not sure if that's cheap enough but you could call them and ask if the can give a better price. I got a good price on my Peavey. They were good at matching any other shops like GAK and Thomann. Dave
4. I have a few Mono straps. The first one i bought was for my Thumb bass and it stopped the slight neck dive too depending on which version you buy. I've since bought another couple to replace older straps. They are good but i think the Comfort Strap is cheaper and probably do same if not better. I did have the Bass Centre version of the comfort strap but the plastic link snapped hence buying the Mono's. The Comfort Strap original versions have metal links i believe. Have a look at Bass Direct site for some better details. They sell both and sure Mark will be able to advise more. Dave
5. Not able to open the link at work Badass but will have a look tonight and maybe make the effort to go just for the sake of seeing Mr Hamm live. Its not a great venue for bands as its a floor level stage so unless you are at front you generally can't see the bands. They do have large screens up around the venue tho to make sure you can still see the bands from anywhere in venue. Its quite a small venue tho. Thanks for advice. Dave
6. Great little amps and they have a nicer sound than the 1001RBi amp i have. Extremely portable and just amazing wee thing. Good luck with the sale. Dave
7. Just found that Stu Hamm is playing with a band named Carl Verheyen at a local-ish venue. Any thoughts whether it might be worth a visit. I know him as a bass soloist and thought it might be worth a viewing just for that. I might have put this in the wrong section but it was more a general question than a gig advert so wasn't too sure. ?? Dave
8. Loads of stuff in there that i used to listen to. Some nice reminders of better times (musically of course ) Just so i haven't lost my marbles ! Was Kim Mitchell not Max Webster or with them. I'm sure it was them that supported Rush on Hemispheres or Farewell tour ?? all good tho. Dave
9.
Good tip. Similarly, a slap bass solo can easily be replaced by simply recording a shopping trolley full of empty coke cans being pushed down a fire escape.
Brilliant !!! made me laugh.
10.
Thanks everyone. I cleared the air a bit this morning, spoke to the guitarist today and he said I'm welcome to come along and make suggestions at any point, he also said the extra guitar parts are there to just beef things up if need. I made him aware that I'd like to have a say in the final sound and production stages. Seems we might be batting for the same team after all.. He also complemented my bass playing and said that I bring my own sound to the band and that that won't be lost. Lets see.. I'm a lot more confident today. Thanks again to the caring bass chat members for letting me air my worries and insecurities. I'll post up when we have the final product in the bag so to speak.
Result !! Well done and good news all round by sound of it. Happy for you. Now go for it. !!! Dave
11. One band i was in told me that when i left for a short period they realised on my return just exactly what the band was missing and they now understood what my style of bass playing brought to the band. Point of that story is to highlight you are never "just the bass player". Each member of a band brings to the forum their own descriptive style and therefore should warrant an equal share of viewpoint towards the end product. Summary :- state your point of view. You've earned it. !!! Hope all works out ok and to your satisfaction. PS I have given up with bands once again cause i cant be arsed with the band politics. Pity cause i enjoy playing in a good happy band. All the best Dave
12. For me its all been said. Until you try learning them you dont appreciate how complex and melodic to the songs. Was never a huge Queen fan but do appreciate they were all good individually and even more so as a group. Great sound tho. Dave
13. Rucksack with side and front pockets for leads, tuner, spare strings and various essential tools and Hedex.
14. used GAK and no probs. used Thomann and also really good but remember to add on the credit card exchange rates etc. Dave
15. Had the 6 string fretted ESP and it was good value for money but seemed quite one-tonish to me. Had a nice low growl but a little too heavy on the bass almost boomy. Neck was ok but string spacing was the issue for me. I like 18mm at bridge where the ESP was 16 i think. I kept hitting wrong strings or missing strings when doing faster runs. That may have been due to switch from 4 to 6 strings tho. Found the 18mm spacing on my Overwater fretless far easier to deal with. Pretty sure Yamaha do a 5 string fretless but they will be rare. Think the Ibanez range seem pretty impressive too for the money and they are usually well built. Good luck with the search and playing fretless. It takes a little while to get it right but its great fun trying and you'll find you have more expression of sound with your fretless than fretted IMO. all the best Dave
16. Its Carluke. Move to Biggar. Much more stable. Sorry couldn't resist. Dave
17. Selling the image along with the bass is a well tried and tested theory. Look at Harley Davidson bikes. They sell the image of a Harley and others are catching on fast. Yep i fell for that image and bought one many moons ago - Ooops !!!! Dave
18. The packaging it arrived at the retailers should have the box weight identified for couriers. Thought that was a requirement for mfrs these days when shipping original kit in boxes. Would it not be on the mfrs website telling you the weight of a bass that you could look up yourself. ? Dave
19. Sandin Wilson is Gino's current bassist. Friends with Jimmy Haslip who helped select his fretless bass for Gino's sound. Sandin was a big Yamaha TRB 6 string fan but since moved to Spector for his birthday few yrs ago. Check out Sandin's solo album "Into My World" - you won't be disappointed. He's a top guy and happy to chat about his music, basses and styles. Dave
20. i didn't know my GT6B had an SWR setting. I need to look further. I have a GK 1001RBi but at home i'm using small GK MB200 which has an incredable sound and i kinda prefer it to the 1001 if i'm honest. I guess i could run the MB200 pre-amp into power amp of 1001. I'm in agreement with most. Use whatever you think or feel is best. Dave
21.
Here's mine Chris Squire Geddy Lee J-PJones Eric Czar John Entwhistle Neil Murray Pete Trewavas Sting John Wetton Greg Lake That'll do nicely
+1 My exact choice too. Dave
22. Back in the good ole days of 70/80's pub rock, many bands i knew and the one's i played in did a balanced mix of original and covers to catch audiences from both camps and it usually worked very well. You had to pick covers that matched your own style to do it justice. As the bands became increasingly more popular they slowly dropped the covers until they were doing all original material. AND THEN SPLIT UP Dave
23. Tried a schecter last year and was quite impressed. That is a nice looker you have there. Enjoy. Dave
24. Seen Dressed To Kill twice and they were excellent. Also seen Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Ac/dc tribute bands and all pretty impressive altho some not to my taste but i was there to see other bands but they did all go down an absolute storm and TBH i was having a great time too. Dave
25. If its got a good driving rythmn and bass drive behind it then it will work for most people. If the bands are into it then the crowd normally follows. Its amazing what a few beers will get you dancing to. Best of luck to them. Dave
