Does the "other half" really stop you!
dmccombe7 replied to rodacademy's topic in General Discussion
Most of my recent basses have been birthday presents so cant complain. My wife will by things throughout the year for herself or we pay for expensive items for the house throughout the year. I very rarely spend money on myself (which has only just this minute been brought to my attention) but fact is she doesn't mind when i do buy a bass or an amp. Where she does draw the line is when i asked for a Ducati 999 to match my other bike and she said NO !!! too dangerous was the reply. Ah well you win some you lose some i guess. More persuasion is required - gold bracelet, necklace, ear-rings will sway her a little. Dave -

Sorry, had a look and must have thrown it out when i left the last band. I did get the copy on-line tho. Ultimate guitar maybe ?? Dave -
Whenever Rutherford is mentioned I always remember him thus: Nostalgia isn't what it used to be, etc.
Me too. Huge fan of that era Genesis. Met them all and Mike is a really nice down to earth guy. Dave

Happy Times - enjoy and post a set list cause it sounds interesting. Bit too far for me to travel tho for gigs. Dave

I think i have this written down somewhere at home. When i covered the section you are talking about i also watched Neil play it live on youtube with his Kramer bass not that the bass made a differance but it stood out more in the mix. He played the high fill midway on the G string. Cant remember the exact notes at moment but will try and look it out tonight and email you. Oddly enough i learned Neil's early version but the band wanted to do the later rock version which didn't have the clever little Murray fill-ins. To sit on the learning fence a bit i read music (altho no expert) and know chords but i sometimes find it quicker and easier and if i'm honest more enjoyable to read TAB or watch youtube. From that I'll write my own lines down based on what i prefer from each version. A kind of short-hand if you like. Like any good musician you should use anything at your disposal to get the job done right. A combination of all of the techniques mentioned aint such a bad thing (IMHO) Most of all make sure you enjoy it. Dave -
Welcome back Andy, I love this style of playing altho haven't mastered the 2 hand technique myself. You have a fantastic ability to make it look relatively easy because of your relaxed style. Love the tracks and so bloomin easy to listen to. Keep us posted of anything new. I like it a lot. Inspired to try and do better on this technique if nothing else. Thanks Dave

Don't sell your Warwick. As a minimum you should keep a fretted and fretless. Having gathered a few basses over the years I like having the availability of either fretted or fretless for whatever I feel like playing at any one time. I think getting rid of a classic Warwick Streamer might be a big regret. Dave

Agree. Have What's Next album and absolutely stunning musicianship. Brilliant live performer. Dave

I've had to tweak most of my basses over the years except for my 89 Warwick Thumb from Sound Control which still has same set up since buying and my Overwater basses which were set up perfectly on the day by Chris and his team when i bought them. I do check my basses on a routine basis. Fenders i've had to do whenever i buy them. Rik was the same. Yamaha, WAL, Ibanez, Aria, Shergold all tweaked when i bought them. Not such a bad thing as it gives you experience in how to adjust your bass to get the best out of it. Not everyone wants the lowest action on every bass. On my Jazz bass i preferred a slightly higher action than on my Warwick simply because i play my Fender harder in rock band than i do my Warwick which is used for more intricate styles. Provided you follow the instructions which are posted everywhere these days and take your time making small adjustments at a time until you get approx what you want then not much to it really and you'll gain loads of experience along the way. My Warwick Thumb 89 with EMG's was the culmination of many months searching for my ideal bass back in 1989. Tried just about every bass I could in Glasgow shops and kept going back to my Thumb bass. Neck is thin front to back and the sound was like nothing else available to me. It is a bit neck heavy but nothing drastic. I did notice at the time that neck did feel longer although same length as other basses and took me a little time to get used to what felt like an extended neck length but its down to where you sit the bass on your strap. A little adjustment and lovely. Biggest downside for me was that when your hands sweat the back of the neck always felt a little sticky and needs more than normal cleaning or rub down with towel while gigging. Tried couple of streamers at same time but preferred the feel of the Thumb. Early Warwicks had either black or gold fittings if I remember right. The Streamer had gold and thought it looked a bit tacky. I love my Thumb bass and would never dream of selling it Dave

Until I've tested it at volume its gonna be hard to tell exactly how the tone sounds but at the moment with the Boost at 12-9 it gives a reasonable warm sound in comparison to flat sound which is very clean and sharp. Definitely not a fan of Hartke now I must admit but its always nice getting new gear. Exciting to say the least. Dave

Have i put it in wrong section ? Was only a general comment that i had bought one rather than a review or anything like that. If so apologies. There are that many sections nowadays us old fellas get confused Other than that I'm fair impressed with it so far. Dave

Use mine with my Berg AE112 NEO cabs and its nice, clean and sharp. Use it with a 2nd hand Berg HT322 bought from Karlfer on BC and these kind of cabs are available on BC. If you can stretch to £400 you will manage to get yourself a great 2nd hand bargain on BC. There are always great cabs for sale here so maybe worth scouting the for sale section. Dave

Finally got my new amp delivered today. Gallien Krueger 1001RBii. WHOW its bloody loud compared to anything else I've ever used. Impressed so far. Good variety of tones from its pretty simple layout. Tried all my basses as a comparison and all sounding great. Dave

SORTED..... went back to original format on Soundcloud and all played perfectly. My vote is in. Few I really liked but The Boy just seemed to capture a better feel for what I thought the photo represented. Was a close call between this and Lowdown which again had a very atmospheric feel to it. Dave

Tracks wont play when soundcloud opens. Only managed to hear Bilbo. Is this a tactic in Bilbo's take over of the BC world - Any ideas on how to hear them or resolve the issue Dave

After the disaster with the new Hartke Kilo I bought a few weeks ago I wouldn't touch Hartke with the proverbial big pole. Faulty new amp and complete lack of customer service. (2 weeks to respond ?) Not the kind of service I expect from any company let alone a dedicated bass company. Vote of no confidence from me. Dave

I used a GK MB200 into Berg Neo 12" and paralleled this with my Genz streamliner 600 into my Berg ceramic HT322. The GK managed to keep up pretty easily volume wise. I've also used the MB200 into my HT322 and it has a clean but distinct sound. Wouldn't so much say a growl but definite edge to it. Tonally it has a lot of variation hence reason I've just bought the 1001RB because I was so impressed by the quality of the little MB200. Not sure if that's any help to you but it is a very loud amp when ran into 4ohms. It has to be pretty close to volume of my 600 Genz Dave

Forgot to mention delay in delivery as its a bank holiday up here so its now Monday. Just in case you all thought I had lost the plot again.
-
Yep Looking forward to it but this time if anything goes wrong I can even drive to the shop in Newcastle. No exchange charges either. Lost approx. £50 from the Thomann Kilo disaster. Not Thomann's fault at all and they were excellent to deal with. Think a little more research should have been done on the Kilo which seems to have a few issues when you read the reviews from various bass sites. I've read reviews from as many as I could before deciding on the GK 1001RBii and it was down to either this the 2001RB or Ampeg SVT4 but decided I didn't need the power from the 2001RB and Ampeg aren't getting great reviews on reliability at the moment. At almost half the cost of the 2001RB the 1001RB is a great value for money amp with some really nice features. Of course there's always the issue of Amp GAS after a few yrs and we'll wait and see. At one stage I had 3 amps anyways so who knows. Dave

For me it was Geddy Lee initially and then Jack Bruce from his Cozy Powell and session work era. Also Mr Sinclair from Camel era, Percy Jones, Jeff Berlin, John Giblin. All kinda around same era if memory serves me right. Late 70's. God I'm old.
-
Yep I'm one of the people who was a bit disappointed with the original mix and on hearing the new versions thought they had more definition and clarity. Finally I can hear Ged's bass and sharp clear percussion. No more muddy bass drones. Surely if the band want to remix it and people have the choice as to whether or not its worth buying then why not. Dave

GK 1001RBii I've just bought from Soundslive and delivered Monday. Excited and looking forward to testing. Do have slight GAS for a blue Rik oddly enough. Not sure why tho. Had a white one yrs ago and was very limited but hey ho. Dave

Just sold my Genz Streamliner 600 to Patch and instant payment, very helpful on postage advice and things i'm not sure of. Great communication and a pleasure to do business with. Absolute no hassle guy. Let me know when amp arrived to settle my mind. As said before "deal with absolute confidence" Cheers Patch and thanks for your help getting this on its way to you. Much appreciated Dave
