I now have a hankering for an Xotic J bass that's in Bass Direct. Just love the looks of them and the in built EQ looks very interesting. Any reviews i've seen have been good. It could be "the one". Wish i hadn't followed this thread now. Dave

I hate buying and selling basses but i agree 100% that bass price doesn't guarantee a great bass. My Geddy Jazz CIJ i got new in a sale at £625 around 2010 and its just a fantastic bass. Compared to the pricier USA Jazz basses i've owned or tried over the years it just knocks them out the park IMO. Dave

it was a long time ago when they were Hermes. Can't remember where i got the number if it wasn't on their advert or web page. A google search I found this number for EVRI :- 0330 808 5456 i haven't tried it myself but hope it works for you guys. Dave

Must admit when i bought my WAL Custom in 80's i think that would have been my "one" bass had it not suffered from a dead spot on G string and WAL didn't want to know. £740 for a bass with a dead spot when a Fender J was around £300 new if i remember right. Had a great feel and the tone was sublime for me. It was a lined fretless. On hindsight and having a better knowledge of basses now that i'm older i reckon the dead spot was possibly an easy fix like a rigid saddle not seated properly. If i had known a decent luthier back then i would have taken it there. Think i traded it for a new white Ric 4003 that i wasn't impressed with after a few mths and sold it. Bought my first proper Fender J and that was glorious and where my love of J basses started. Dave

Not good and the damaged part is a worry. I had an issue with EVRI when they were Hermes where a delivery i was expecting on a "Next Day Delivery that i paid extra for) didn't arrive and was showing it was sitting in their local depot from 05:00hrs that morning. When i finally managed to talk to someone they had the cheek to say there wasn't a van due in my area that day so they haven't sent it. Altho i live in the countryside its still Central Belt of Scotland. When i said i paid extra for a Next Day Delivery they simply didn't care and offered no recompense. It was also due on the Fri and because they don't deliver at weekends i asked if i could come and pick it up from the local depot which was only 25 miles from me they said no as i need to wait for a failed first delivery. Absolute joke of a company and would not use them again if i have the choice. Hope the delivery is sorted out soon for you @Jean-Luc Pickguard. Dave

Nope, in 45 yrs of playing i've never found that one bass that would suit me for every style of band i've been in. I like a bass that plays well but it also has to look the part in the band i'm in. (currently 70's Glam Rock and 70's Punk bands.) I've come close with a few tho. My Warwick Thumb NT89 i still have from new in 89. I love this bass but the tone doesn't always suit every style of music i play. My Fender Geddy Jazz CIJ i would use in any style of band but recently i'm finding the Sandberg MarloweDK does the same job and its lighter. My other Sandberg VM4 would maybe fit in any band and it has THE best neck i've ever had but it has no character in its tone. Its like a Ford Focus, it just does its job without issue. After all that the answer would be emphatically NO. Dave

As a teenager i only knew Slade from their Glam era and have never listened to anything from the era you posted above. I wasn't a fan of the skinhead image era at all and because of that i never really looked at the history of them before Glam. Dave

Were they not into their Skinhead bovver boots thing around or just before this album and maybe trying to impress as "hard men yobs" before going full Glam and becoming the darlings of Glam charts. Have to say the playing is exceptional on this album. I'd never heard it before so went and had a listen when i saw you post it. I love Jimmy Lea's live bass playing, he's just all over that neck in a flowing aggressive style. The guys an absolute legend IMO. Dave

Good gig with punk covers band Emergency Exit in one of our fav venues The Dreadnought in Bathgate. Wasn't exactly a big audience but we had dancers almost from the start. Feedback was good and at the break i was told by the singer that a regular band reviewer was raving about my playing. He then approached me and said he had seen the band many times but was usually too busy dancing about that he just enjoyed the music and never really gave a lot of thought to what the bass was doing but tonight he was in on his own and said he was gobsmacked how good the bass playing was. He compared me to John Entwistle and i made it look as tho it was just routine and relatively easy. Using my Sandberg MarloweDK into Ampeg SVT7 Pro and Mesa SW210/115 cabs. Have to say i was fair pleased with the bass tone tonight. I could hear every note nice and clear. I had recently changed the strings to Elixir 45-100 nickels. That additional increase in D & G gauges seemed to make quite a substantial difference to the volume across the strings. I really like those Elixirs. Dave

I play most days too but usually i just run thru the bands various set lists to keep them fresh in my head. Sometimes i'll play along with some Prog music. Dave

Now that would have been funny to watch from an audience point of view but an absolute pain in the bottom for any band let alone the drummer. Shows the professionalism when he didn't just stop the song and tell her to go sit down somewhere .......... outside. Dave

I used to think that until i realised i'm one of those guys that has a low retainer threshold. If i'm not playing it regularly then it goes completely out of memory only to be relearned from scratch much like the Glam Xmas songs i need to relearn every Nov. for the sake of 3-4 gigs a year. The things we do for love. I think there might be a song in there somewhere. Dave
